Some Questions About Cacko

I'm a fairly new C1000 owner.   I keep hearing good things about Cacko, and I want to try it, but I have some questions and concerns I'd like to get answers to first:

   1.  I see that it uses a compressed filesystem.  How exactly does this work?  Does it need to be decompressed first?   Or is it mounted in its compressed state?   Does this make Cacko slower than the Sharp Rom?   Does this make the filesystem read-only, so apps can't be added?
   2.  Was care taken to shut off unnecessary writes to the flash filesystem?   Things like mounting with the 'noatime', option, turning off unnecessary logging, or directing them to a ram filesystem?    I know flash has a limited number of writes, so I don't want to use a rom that unnecessarily hastens its demise.
   3.  Full vs. Lite...   What exactly was removed in the lite version?  Is there a list somewhere?
   4. What do you give up by going from Sharp ROM to Cacko?  Anything significant?

wow i'm interested in the answers myself, as i can't answer them except part of the first, filesystem isn't read only and you can definitely add new apps.

If I recall correctly, there were a whole bunch of apps not included in the LIte version ... and the default feed for that version has all the aps that were not included in the install. I don't know what they are, however, as I'm using the full install, which srono flashed to my 860 before he sold it to me.

Release Notes:

This is the "Lite" version of Cacko ROM 1.23. The only difference from the regular version
is that a lot of applications and kernel modules were removed from the ROM and added to Cacko feed as packages.

This ROM uses less space in of root partition and gives you and great flexibility - install only applications you want.
You'll have about 39Mb (100Mb for C760/C860) of internal flash free.

But you're right, nowhere does he seem to detail what exact apps and modules were extracted. I presume you'd have to go down the list in the feed and see what you'd need. One hopes that the basic wireless connectivity to access the feed is included in the ROM.

I'm just reflashing my Z
Decided to use CackoLite 1.23
I'm busy installing apps that I want, but I don't have my Z connected to the net, so I'm doing it the manual way.
I'll probably finish this tonight, 11:30 AM here. I'll try to add anything I find missing later to this post.

EDIT: I didn't want to use up any more space in this post since this is a bit off topic.
I re-flashed my Z because, last night I installed susp-resume and sudo.
I was hoping to use it to resume my GPS card. Well, it buggered up my Cacko system.
My Z wouldn't suspend, and pushing the on/off button froze it. Uninstalling the above 2
things, only stopped my Z from freezing, it still wouldn't turn off. There's another post about this in a bluetooth topic.
I really didn't have a recent backup, and was going to try CackoLite anyway, if I needed a re-flash.
I also figured out that Picsel Browser replaces 3, if not more apps that I had installed in Cacko full.

It is accurate in that those you listed are not installed in the lite version.  The whole idea of the lite version was a small foot print so that people can add what they want/need.  There are plenty of who do not want these programs installed.  The downside is that the programs *you* install will not be able to take advantage of the cramfs.

Ok, so that gets into some of the other areas I asked about.   So the cramfs is read only?   Where does it get mounted to?  Where do additional apps get installed to?

So If I installed the lite, and installed a number of the apps I listed above, I might be better off with the full version from a space standpoint?

yes exactly (as per the link provided before on cramfs).  I believe (correct me if I'm wrong) that the rom/cramfs takes up a portion of the 128mb flash ram (32mb?) and then other apps you add go into the remaining space on the flash card (different partition).

If you are going to install most of the apps (especially the bigger ones) that are also in the full version, you will get more disk space with the full version.

1. It's mounted uncompressed, so it is read-only and there is a minor performance hit opening bigger apps the original sharp rom, but it't not overly noticeable most of the time

2. No more care was taken than Sharp took, the fiels system is mounted the same as Sharp did and there is no logging turned on by default

3. Have a look at the cacko feeds - everything named lite is not installed on the lite rom, it was designed so that people could get a bare bones system to adapt as they see fit.

4. You give japanese menus by default, these can be added back if needed/wanted (but in that case you probably should use the standard sharp rom) The biggest changes is the removal of Japanese dictionaries, japanese only apps (replaced with eng versions) and removal of the japanese input system. These can be put back in with the use of the japanese support ipks, but everything sharp rom has the cacko rom has too
