A completely different question:

Is it possible to install OZ to an SD card instead of the internal microdrive on a 3100?  I realize we could turn this into a "why the hell would you want to do that?" sort of discussion.  Let's say i'd rather use the higher transfer rates of the internal drive for multimedia and other stuff... or i'm just curious.

Can it be done? if so, how?

Sure, you just need a kernel that has 'root=/dev/mmcblk0p1' in the CONFIG_CMDLINE, a one line change in the defconfig. I've been using that on my c700 for some months now, the c3100 isn't different in that regard.
[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=129011\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]

Is such a kernel provided on the OZ site, or do I have to build OE and make a kernel myself?.  (I haven't had a working OE in about a year, though I guess it would make an afternoon project)

Ask hrw or build it yourself, I haven't got a .oz354x buildtree at the moment.

Altboot can boot off SD if you really want to.

lmao... I knew that would make somebody squeamish.

Good, I might give it a shot this week.  one reason I'd like to do it all on sd is to keep easy tarball backups/restores on my server

yeah...   but I have a tendecy to screw up system stuff while playing around.  being able to pop the sd out, backup all my installed software and links as a tarball, and being able to reverse the process in a matter of minutes.... or having parallel setups on multiple sd cards seems appealing.  I'll likely come to the same conclusion you guys seem to about not doing things that way, as a rule, but for now, it looks interesting.

anyone have a package of qvfb working?  that seems like fun too

edit:  you wouldn't have a kernel of the sort described by koen lying around, would you?

I have a C1000 and I've been altbooting off SD with great success. It started because I was tired of dealing with ipkg-link but one of the real benefits is being able to make backup images of the card in my desktop's card reader. dd if=/dev/sdc1 of=/home/me/sd-image.ext2 is a beautiful thing. If you haven't already tried altboot, you might want to play with that before bothering with a custom kernel. It's always nice to have altboot functionality even when your SD card isn't in the Zaurus as it gives you a lot of flexibility. Anyways, if altboot isn't doing what you want for some reason *and* you can't setup an OE build tree, I might be able to help you build the custom kernel.

I'll give altboot a whirl and see where I end up.  Sounds promising.

Isn't there a way to wipe clean the whole entire system memory before you try a new rom? that way there are no ghosts from other roms.
[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=128984\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]

The Cacko updater can erase/reformat your user partition, too, along with repartitioning NAND.  FWIW, woud be nice to see a similar menu type updater.sh in OZ at some point.  If no one else does it, and if I have time, I might do it.

Oh, and on the boot off of SD topic, my 5500 does exactly that with 3.5.4, and it works quite well.  It is a little confusing, with two stages of altboot and two password questions being asked (once), but it works very well on my SL-5500 with a 256MB SanDisk SD containing a loopback image of 3.5.4.  Read the altboot pages (linked from the openzaurus wiki; let's see, [a href=\"http://openzaurus.org/wordpress/howto/the-altboot-faq/]http://openzaurus.org/wordpress/howto/the-altboot-faq/[/url] is the page; I followed the simple howto and it worked, lickety-split.

With the C1000 it's not nearly as big of an issue as with the 5500; in fact, Hrw, boot off of SD should be the default for Collie for OZ, as, like you have said, that 16MB is awfully limiting.   But I don't see why it wouldn't work just as well on Akita.

Now that I have two Akita's, my need for the Collie is pretty well gone.  Before I try to eBay it (that's where I got it), does any OZ developer want it, with the 256MB SD card and 3.5.4 loaded as-is?  I have a USB charging/sync cable and the cradle; I'm using the EA-70 power supply with my Akitas.  I'll donate it to any OZ developer that needs it, although I might need some help with shipping (particularly to Poland, although I might try).

hrw, that's good news.

i got 2 questions about this release.

in the release notes on the wiki, it mentions that USB networking does not work with windows. is this going to be fixed/implemented later or not at all because the developers dont have/dont like windows?

also, on the about oz page, it mentions that java support is currently only for command line apps with no GUI and GUI support is going to be added at some later stage. do you have rough estimate, like in a few weeks, or months, or years? do you know which vm it is going to be based on, ie sablevm, jamvm, or others? classpath has gtk and qt4 bindings so GPE should be relatively easily supported but opie is going to take a lot of work i guess.

thanks for any info

Do you have a sizable sd card & the doc tab enabled? If so, try turning the doc tab off (I foud that to be one of the more annoying things with opie). hth[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=128816\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]
1GB SD Card and yes Doc Tab enabled

Why should that cripple the whole system??[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=128817\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]
My experience has been that the doctab implementation was (is?) very buggy. It never worked for me, and yes, would 'cripple the whole system', at least while it was initailly loading. That was my experience. Turn off the doc tab & see it it helps.

(** DISCLAIMER ** this is coming from someone who hasn't used the latest 3.5.4. image for OPIE that much, so my opinion is based mainly on 3.5.3)

The doctab in Opie is still unusable
[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=128879\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]

I'll like to help with the doctab code ... any pointers where I should start looking?

opie.handhelds.org then go to downloads or CVS browser and grab the Opie code.

One day it will be fixed but it is rather low priority - there are more important things to do. And we lack kernel hackers.

We have sablevm 1.12, jamvm 1.3.2, classpath 0.17 in OZ 3.5.4.x. OE .dev branch has classpath 0.20, jamvm 1.4.2 to which we can probably upgrade OZ (if needed for someone). And I do not use Java on Zaurus so cannot help more.
