Bluetooth Usb Dongles (first Time User)

I just found these Bluetooth dongles at a local Staples. The only store in town that carries any bluetooth adapters.
Kensington Bluetooth USB adapter 2.0
I bought 2 of these, one for my PC & one for my Zaurus.
I installed the windows XP software and got the software to recognize my Zaurus, and my Palm. (Palm has built-in BT)
The software is Widcomm Bluetooth 4.0.1.2400

I can't get either one of them to connect. (Zaurus or Palm)
I won't get into my Palm connection probs here, but the Zaurus should connect.
I read the OESF pages on Bluetooth. Some of the info is for older models/ROMs
I have Cacko 1.23 lite on a SL-C3100
I also read several threads in the forum here and a Bluetooth PAN website linked from OESF's Bluetooth howto.
In 'Network' on settings tab, I tried setting up 'Bluetooth PPP', and 'Bluetooth PAN - TCP/IP'
Neither of these work, I made all the settings, and Paired them with "1234"
How do I find what chipset I'm using?
In my bluetooth.conf, there is no entry for Kensington
What do I need to enter in here if my model isn't shown?
I really don't want to take these back, and I'm always a nervious wreck when mail ordering stuff.
That's why I prefer to buy things locally.
Any help would be appreciated.
Just a command like "cardctl status" (for USB dongles, would be helpful)
I really need to know what the chipset is so I can research these further.

I just tried to connect 2 PCs together and everything seemed to setup correctly, but when I tried to connect my Win98SE PC to my WinXP PC they failed to connect.
The blue lights are flashing, but $86.00 is a lot to pay for 2 flashing blue lights

I've been working on this for 5 hours now, and discovered the windows software only allows the Zaurus and my Palm to act like a PDA only.
This means I can only use these expensive dongles to transfer addresses and Vcards.
I still cannot get a connection between 6 scenerios
Palm -> to Zaurus
Win98 PC -> to WinXP PC
Zaurus -> to Win98 PC
Zaurus -> to WinXP PC
Palm -> to Win98 PC
Palm -> to WinXP PC

Does anyone here use dongles without windows software on a windows machine?

Should Bluetooth be able to connect with PPP or PAN from a Zaurus to a Windows PC without Windows Bluetooth software installed on the PC?

I can't be too helpful, but will venture a couple of comments. My Socket bluetooth dongle was easily recognized in Cacko 1.23 and I had it working at one point for PAN networking, but the hard drive crashed and I haven't set it back up as I wasn't using it. I use the dongle regularly to connect to my Motorola E810 for dial-up low-end broadband on my cell phone, and it works easily and reliably both on the Z and with my laptop. Most bluetooth dongles have one of the two supported chips AFAICR and the Widcomm software is very common, so I would guess that you just have a configuration issue.

I found the documentation and instructions available to be difficult and a bit dated as you did. You might try posting to the long bluetooth driver thread you referenced and see if you can get some configuration help from one of the experts.

I personally only have had success with obex(laptop/phone/zaurus) and dun(via bluefig application), oh yea and hid devices, like my bluetooth mouse.

there is a way to use dun via the network applet, but yet have to figure out what is needed, if I do then I wont use the bluefig applet, so if anyone has gotten gmrs to work with cingular, let me know!

I finally got Bluetooth to work!!        (On my Palm Zire 72)

I haven't tried the Linux instructions yet.
I just got my Palm working, and that is a major step in figuring out this Bluetooth technology.
On my Palm, I surfed, using WebPro, and connected to 2 different sites. (WebPro and MTCO, my ISP)
On my Palm's Picsel Browser, I connected to these forums.
I won't use my Palm to post/reply to posts on this forum because inputting text into a palm with the onscreen keyboard is frustrating...

Now, I'm going to try to get my Zaurus to connect thru Bluetooth.

At least, I now know that my dongles are working like they are supposed to work.

I'm still trying to connect my Z thru bluetooth to my XP Desktop PC
I've got the same settings in my bluetooth network TCP/IP on my desktop as on my Z in the PAN settings.
IP address: 192.168.0.5
Subnet Mask: 225.225.225.0
Gateway: 192.168.129.1
First DNS: 192.168.0.1

My Z starts to connect.
Both bluetooth dongles flash slowly for about 15 seconds.
I get a notification on my PC that bluetooth is connected. (My Z is frozen while this happens).
Then both bluetooth dongles start flashing really fast, (3 times), then they stop flashing.
Then I get 3 "ding" sounds on my Z and nothing else happens.
Meanwhile, my PC notification goes back to disconnected.

I have internet connection sharing turned on for my dialup.
I tried setting internet connection sharing for my bluetooth, but windows won't allow me to have both my dialup and bluetooth connection setup for internet connection sharing at the same time.
If I try to enable internet connection sharing for my bluetooth connection, I cannot access my dialup connection.
My dialup connection is the only method I have to connect online. (I don't have cable, DSL, ect).
What do I need to do to get my Z to stay connected thru bluetooth?

Using the many instructions and a whole lot of googling, I managed to get one thing that is Bluetooth and Zaurus related to work.
The #@^* windows software still thinks my Zaurus is just a PDA, and now doesn't remember that it is/was, paired.
I was able to drag and drop an image file onto Bluetooth Imaging and this picture ended up in a new directory on my Zaurus.
/hdd3/Documents/Obex_Inbox
It also created another folder called:
/hdd3/Documents/Obex_Outbox

I tried to drop an *.sh file onto this icon, but it wouldn't copy the file, like it did when I dropped my picture on it.

I was hoping to find some "better" windows software, but this whole Bluetooth thing seems to use Proprietary software in windows, and your'e tied to the software that comes with the dongle.

Another waste of $85....

I have 2 FTP programs on my Zaurus.
ncftp and opieftp

1. How do I make my windows software access ftp on my Zaurus?
2. I tried opieftp and input my IP number, but it won't connect. (This is one of the rare times when BT actually stays connected).
3. Why do I almost always get the dreaded "permission denied(13)" in console when using following command?
pand --role PANU --service NAP --connect 00:03:c9:bd:2f:0b --nodetach
4. above command seems to be only method that I can connect occasionally.
5. To make successful connection, I have to issue above command in konsole, then quickly click the BT icon in WinXP, then input PIN (1234), then select OK, then select another windows popup, which says, "always authorize this connection"
I have to do this all very quickly, or my connection will be lost, and I need to start all over again.
Windows never seems to remember that I have a PIN number and that, I want to ALWAYS authorize this connection.
6. Below are 2 screenshots.
first one, windows saying, "no FTP on target device"
second, Konsole on Zaurus with "permission denied message"
7. Why must this be so difficult?? It is so much easier to transfer files from my Zaurus using a USB cable.
Just plug in cable, wait 20 sec, click /hdd3 in windows, DONE!! (all dirs available)

Thanks for reading my rant, I'm about to ditch this bluetooth stuff altogether and just keep a long USB cable handy.

This is my first time using bluetooth. I didn't know that winXP had bluetooth included.
I don't know anything about WinXP BT software.
I installed the software from the CD that came with my dongle.
It seems very complex, and has a lot of stuff that I don't think I need.
It comes with 2 manuals, one is 55 pages, the other is 129 pages.
I read them both and in all the instructions, it is assumed that you have this software installed on every machine that you use bluetooth to connect with. (Except phones and pocket PC).
I could try WinXPs BT software, but am unsure if this Widcomm software will uninstall cleanly.
I'll try uninstalling it later when I have more time.
Is the WinXP BT software on the service pack 2 CD-ROM?
I ordered the CD-ROM for SP2 so I wouldn't have to download it, if I needed it again.

Yes, XP SP2 should include updated bt stack. I'm not sure if Broadcom BT 2.0 EDR chipset is supported, thou. But you can always try and see it for yourself.

I uninstalled the Widcomm drivers/software, rebooted and let windows try to install it's software/drivers.
It said, no drivers available and tried to connect to the internet.
I tried all the settings in the wizard, none worked.
I also went to microsoft.com and couldn't find my USB bluetooth dongle listed in supported hardware.

In the meantime, I found some patched widcomm drivers.
5.0.1.1400 (instead of 4.0.1.2400 that came on the CD).
These drivers behave the exact same way as the ones that came with the dongle.
They have more features that I don't think I need.
I'll re-install my original drivers, (the ones on the CD), next time I reboot my XP machine.
Oh, BTW - the 5.0.1.1400 drivers changed my firmware revision number to 2.1.39.0
The firmware revision using the 4.0.1.2400 drivers was 8192.65 / 39

I guess purchasing new hardware isn't a good idea for using with my Z
I'll have to can these dongles and buy a CF card sometime
