Hey, how about this for zaurus replacement - http://61.219.50.186/magpie_pda.html ?
[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=152339\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]

That's been around for a while. Only 203mhz, QVGA screen. To its credit does have USB Host. Unfortunately, other than the built in Wi-fi, it's impossible to consider this as anything but a pale imitation of the Z.
[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=152344\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]
On top of that I don't think it's actually been released yet.
It was supposed to be quite cheap too,  so it might have made an economical choice for someone that wanted the features that the Magpie had but didn't want to by a 5xxx. *shrug*

Zaurus Out Of Production?

Is it worth taking a snapshot of the various sharp websites which show the zaurus, such as the www.ezaurus.com? There's all sorts of useful information and details on them which no doubt will disappear when the Z drops out of production.

Wasn't there, a long time ago (before my time) , a US & UK developer & support forum which Sharp abruptly turned off?

Snapshotting this forum has proved to me that you can become dependent on websites which aren't always as dependable as you'd like!

it's the Socket card, the early revisions are actually Nokia devices (Nokia sold that division to Socket/Symbol), and are unstable; also you can't reflash them. The later G & H devices are probably a lot more reliable.

The one I use now is a PANBT010M:
[img]http://www.ccandc.com.tw/product/b-cf.JPG\" border=\"0\" class=\"linked-image\" /]
it cost about a tenner off ebay, it does stick out a bit, but it's not too bad, and PAN networking seems quite reliable - as reliable as from my linux laptop to my firewall.
I've thought about opening the case to see if I can make it smaller, but it's not a massive hassle for me.
[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=152352\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]

I've managed a PAN network using the socket card and a 1.1 dongle on linux and windows (Microsoft Stack). I can also do Obex on windows with the 2.0BT built into the Libretto.

I'm going to try the dongle's software under windows next, as Microsoft's stack doesn't let you bridge a PAN network to the internet. (Why???)

That would be handy but, most of the info is in Japanese though.

I found out yesterday that the product sites for the [a href=\"http://www.ezaurus.com/lineup/slc860/index.html]C860[/url] and C3000 are still on the ezaurus site.    I couldn't find the C3100 or C7xx site though.

EDIT:  Found the C3100 one.

Probably a good idea.  I've started downloading packages for the Z, in case some of them start disappearing.  I was hoping to track down some of the obscure sites that have unusual packages that I've had to hunt for in the past.  I noticed that some of the sites I've visited hadn't been updated for a while and with the Z discontinued, I don't know how long those sites will be around.  Now if I could only remember where I found them!

You can get a 4gb sd card (1gb Transcend 150x for eg) and you can leave you cf slot for wifi permanently .... which is basically what I am doing.
[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=152322\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]

Yes, but the heart of the matter is that I can't stand typing on my Z with a friggen card poking an inch out the side! It's uncomfortable, reduces portability, and is quite likely to be damaged leaving it like that.

I'm trying to get my Socket BT card working for networking because it mounts flush. That would make me happy, slow speeds be damned.

Unfortunately, BT software is a huge steaming pile, and getting the whole mess working has been less than an entirely pleasing process so far.
[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=152328\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]

hehe ... it's funny how we can get influenced by others ... I've been using the keyboard, thumbing style while surfing the web, writing on forums etc, and have been pretty ok with it ... but then noticed what you mean, in that the wifi card does sticks out a bit. Mine juts just a half inch so it's pretty alright.

Someone on another thread was asking if the screen can be rotated 180 landscape in tablet mode so that the wifi juts out on the right (it's on the left in tablet mode by default). Still trying to find the script handler for rotation.

Yes, I've noticed that too, speculatrix....

BUT, still wondering if people are really using Newts these days or is it more for a novelty/collector sake now?

pdahero, just out of curiousity, what do you use your Newt for nowadays??

look on ebay at closed auctions and you'll see that 2000 and 2100s still sell for well over US$200!

I still use my Newton because of the persistence of the data.  It really is good for entering random information that I need to remember, and it's easy to search and find what I want, years later.  When the battery dies, no problem, nothing gets lost, just plug it in months later, the information is still stored.

Sure, it's a bit heavy, it's grayscale, it's a bit slow.  But it is still useful.

Mostly as a mobile journal, actually. The Newton makes a wonderful mobile writing platform, especially with its size and full-sized stylus (pen?) Also with its slightly textured screen (compared to the Original Message Pad) and my custom stylus pen from Cross, it's just about perfect.

It even hooks up to my Personal Stylewriter so I can print directly if need be.

I can still say the same about my old Texas Instruments Avigo 10 that I still use as a backup PDA, about 11 years old and still kicking with a greyscale screen and a maxed out memory of 2 megs, LOL.

and just for those of you thinking of getting an OQO to replace your Z, my OQO is almost dead. Piece of $^&*. Lousy quality, not worth is at all considering that it cost 4 times as much as the Zaurus and I had my Zaurus much longer than the OQO and use my Zaurus much more. Stupid OQO.

Sorry to hear that Meanie. After the hype and long wait, that is disappointing. I read the fellows posts from the point when he had the matchbox PC. Got a bad feel from the way it progressed. I was shocked that it made it to market and more shocked by the price. Some of the vaporware devices being posted here as potential successors to the Z give me a similarly bad feeling.

yeah warranty is a sham! I had to return some parts and they send me back some other faulty parts and even missed a few parts that I send them and still waiting for them to send the missing parts back. This been going on for almost 2 months!
Stay away from OQO, they have very bad quality control. If you ever need to return something, you are in for a very long trip and trial and error and sending back and fro many parts for many months... also their distributor expansys is also not the best out there. in addition to being bloody expensive, they are also very slow, just like OQO itself I guess. Those two make a nice pair, equally slow and expensive.. a real match made in hell...
