What is the best Zaurus E-mail program?
« on: May 28, 2004, 06:05:09 pm »
I\'m about to take the large leap and move over my e-mail to my Zaurus.  So, I want to make sure this next stepis taking with the right program because I\'ll be sticking with it for a long time.

I need e-mail that supports POP3, SMTP, attachements, HTML encoded e-mails, and Outlook protocols.  Calendar functionality from e-mail meeting invitations would be nice but is not required.  Backwards compatibility with my existing e-mail program (Outlook Express) is NOT required, since I\'ll be starting over with new history files anyways...

Compression would be nice because of harddrive space limitations.

I\'m running Qtopia on Zaurus SL-C860.

Which e-mail program for the Zaurus is the best, and why?  What are the pro\'s and con\'s of each?

Thanks in advance!    (You guys rock!!  Thanks for your continued help!  )

Your best bet is QTMail (Sharp default). It supports everything you listed and is very easy to use. And I think it workd on the C860.

But I don\'t know what \"Outlook protocols\" are, so I dunno if it supports that.

Other than that, tkcMail might work (never used that one, so I can\'t really say).

I have great luck with the default email program. It is super easy to set up, and they have a solution to large emails: you can set a size limit, and if the email exceeds the limit, the message will download without the attachment. You can retrieve the large attachment with one click if you need it. I don\'t know how the compression works, but I hold several hundred emails on my 5500. If you want, you can have your email save to an SD card or periodically move them to the SD card very easily if you have space issues.

The only downside is I have not figured out an easy way to purge many emails at once...it is an all-or-nothing thing as far as I can tell.

I really wish there was a way to highlight emails and delete the selected emails without opening them.  But I haven\'t figured out a way to do it.  Otherwise, the Sharp email program is fine.

Take it from someone (one of MANY) who wasted their money on tkcMail - it is seriously broken.  No SSL, no IMAP, have to configure  every time it starts.  TONS of problems!

You could also take a look at Sylpheed and run it under XQt (http://xqt.sourceforge.jp/). It does POP3, IMAP4, NNTP (News) and SMTP AUTH. The version available on the XQt web site doesn\'t do IMAP over SSL but it can be re-compiled with SSL enabled.

You can use europeen fonts (installed on qtopia) with XQT (and Sylpheed) ??

Does the QTMail support different folders you can place your e-mail in (to sort the e-mail).  Also does it support multiple accounts?  (I want to use this work both my work AND home accounts)

What\'s the largest load anyone has ever had with QTMail?  Can it handle 1 GB of e-mail archives (assuming I have the space for it?)

ThunderBird does e-mail?  It sounds like it does a lot... I\'ll have to look at it.  Is there a port for QTopia?  How does it compare to QTMail and others?  Pro\'s / Con\'s?

ThunderBird only does email.  They took a hammer to the Mozilla suite and shards were known as Firefox the browser (formerly known as Firebird, formerly known as Phoenix) and Thunderbird the mail client (formerly known as Minotaur).

Hi Chaps,

does anybody know if there is a version of QtMail out there that allows AUTH SMTP? If yes I would be very happy to use this simple mailer. As it stands at the moment I do not have mobile mail and all the suggested apps here are to complicated for me :-(

The built-in mail program on the SL-C860 does AUTH SMTP.

What's the story with Thunderbird and Zaurus?  Is Thunderbird a good e-mail solution for the Zaurus?  Is the VGA 640x480 layout large enough for the Thunderbird layout?  Is the machine fast enough?  Is 64 MB enough memory?

Also... is Thunderbird open-source?  Could Mozilla of today become the microsoft of tomorrow?  (I don't know so I have to ask).

Could Mozilla's Thunderbird (E-Mail), Sunbird (Calendar), and Firebird (Browser) become the new standard for the Zaurus backbone?  I searched for topics that may have already discussed this and couldn't find many.

Could thunderbird be compiled for the QTopia environment?  (I don't understand the differences between the various environments and why some software works on some and not on others).

Can someone enlighten me?

Thanks,
Tony Olsen
