I'm working right now on ripping DVDs to make them a good size/rate for the 5500. I'm using acidrip on Mandrake 10. So, I'll try to post some info here when I've got it. (:

Okay, in Linux, using AcidRip (with mencode). rip the dvds at 320X240, put your bit rate somewhere around 150 or so and use the lavc compression. I played the file off my sd card with tckvideo and its in sync and looks pretty good. There's a tiny bit of choppiness when there's full screen movement. I'll try to post an example of the video so you all can try it:

I just updated my linux box to a 2500 sempron and trying to figure out which linux flavor to run.  after that is resolved, ill try your methods.

i am using a sd pny 1g and a ...well cf 1g.  so i can literally store 20 dragon ball z videos at least 1 gb.  Man!  the zaurus is starting to look like an excellent ipod without all that drm restriction.

Just so you know, the iPod itself has NO DRM ON THE HARDWARE. It's only on some of the files (i.e. the iTunes Music Store files) that the DRM is on.

It plays (even illegally acquired) MP3s, and un-DRM'd AAC (M4A) files, with no issues. In fact all the music I have on mine is non-DRM'd. Just ripped straight from CDs or downloaded, then re-encoded to AAC (since the file format is better than MP3s). And just to clear something up, I downloaded all that music legally, since up here in Canada, it's perfectly legal, no matter the source.

So yeh, the Zaurus is good for movies, as long as you have a good player, but for music it's not the best thing out there, in my opinion. The downsides to the Z as a music player are that it doesn't have anywhere near the storage size of some music players (even running with a microdrive, but that draws more power), and that it's battery life playing music pretty well sucks.

My 3rd generation iPod has to be charged about once every two days, getting about 5 hours of use out of it per day (of course I turned off the clicker and the backlight). And the 4th generation is said to be a lot better on the battery life.
Sorry. I just don't have the time...

I like the ipod but why buy it if i have the zaurus.

I use tckplayer and its tweeked(i run it off the internal drive with visualization off to prevent problems).  i turn off the backlight, and i have an external battery which lasts me a couple of days without recharge.  all my files are converted to ogg which gives me about 40 albums per 1g at 44k audio 64kbps which bpm encoder does really good.

besides, why support the "baby steps" "baby steps" allience of these folks.  They are slowly feeding us this stuff.  Have you seen the latest next generation ipods or mp3 players?  fingerprint identification and eye retina scanners?  j/k but im not joking since i been reading articles on this stuff like this area here

sci fi will become reality if you let them.

http://portableaudio.engadget.com/entry/9816814256067771/

there you go and let me know if you like the ipods direction?

the latest generation pc's encode the audio ripped files  like sony which allowes only 3 burns and that is all.  mediaplayer 10 from wincrap is doing the same, hardware embedded drm is coming around, hp is doing the same.  now with the hole slew of drm embedded devices coming and the average lifespan of a pc is 3 years, whats gona happen?  baby steps man.  we are screwed.  Im buying old pc's and storing em..... along with a few current ipods  or zauruses before crap hits the roof!

FYI: Any transcoding to a lossy format will result in loss of data no matter how good your compression is. If you get a file in mp3, there's no way you can get it to sound better than that.  A crap sounding mp3 will not sound better transcoded to an AAC, AC3, or OGG (my personal preference).
Then again, if you're talking about extremely high bitrate MP3, the perceived quality loss may be acceptable. My personal tolerance is anything above 360 kbps VBR for MP3, and 0.6 quality for OGG.

I hope you meant 160kbps for MP3 - doesn't it have a upper limit of 320kbps?

Since we're here, what are people usng to play videos?  I'm looking for something free that does the job nicely.

Also, what's the best codec for me to encode to?  Will mpeg suffice?  I'll be using my mac and ffmpegx to recode my Roswell episodes from mpeg to whatever will play on the Z.

This has been (and probably will be  ) talked about quite a bit in this forum. Depending on the hard- and software in use, there are several options. You might have a look at this recently active thread for example. Of course the search function will probably come up with quite a few more postings

Best regards,
Chris.
