Japanese dates

Is there some way to change the Japanese date formet to English format? I have an 860 with the Sharp ROM. I've converted the menus to English by hiding .qm files, but can't figure out how to change the date format. Thanks.

To change the dat format you als have to hide the libsl.qmid, however it's not the best fix as it replaces the 年(kanji for year) with the word "year", same for month etc. The Cacko rom has the correct date format so you maybe able to see what they have changed and mimic it. (I've never changed cause I prefer the Japanese date style myself)

I have been wondering about the DATE/TIME app & hiding the ja .qm files recently while converting the 1.40 Sharp ROM to english.

I followed the "hide the i18n/ja .qm files" proceedure but was not completely satisfied with the results. Kinda rough in places.

Noticed that Dynamism's english conversions do not hide the ja .qm files AND that their DATE/TIME app shows a DATE FORMAT drop down line & english type formats for the date. So I figured that there had to be another trick here that we were missing.

Finally discovered tonight that editing

/home/root/Settings/locale.conf

and changing the

[Language]
Language = ja

section to en fixes the DATE/TIME app conversion to english format & adds the DATE FORMAT drop down. You also do not have to hide all those ja .qm files.

For some unknown reason, Dynamism's conversion uses

Language = zh_TW

(which gave me some odd problems in the past) but I used

Language = en

and it worked just right. You will need to make symblinks in the i18n/en subdir to the ja .qm files that were moved back from the HIDE subdir to the i18n/ja subdir in the "hide 'em" method.

 Plus, by putting the modified Movie Player .qmid files in the i18n/en subdir, ALL the menus & headers in Movie Player come up in english.

Give it a try & let me know if it works for ya'll.

Okaaaay. Now I think that I understand why Dynamism uses Language = zh_TW.

If you use Language = en, all the apps forget how to read Japanese charcters. Just square boxs.

For some reason, the display also becomes larger & easier to read, BTW.

But using zh_TW, you get both english & Japanese char sets.

And putting the converted Movie Player .qmid files in i18n/zh_TW still gives a completely english set of menus & headers for the app.

Oh, BTW,    qcop QPE/System "restart()"    does NOT always work the same as a reboot. On one go round, Abook started failing to open. Said that it couldn't find a so.0 library even though it was clearly "there". SET from konsole showed that paths had been buggered & a reboot cured the glitch.

Fun, fun, fun. Insomnia isn't so bad with a Z & a project (G).

Yeah, I tried the en, zh_TW locales when I was trying to convert my Z way back when I first got it.

I found that the en locale gave me really small fonts and I couldn't read/input Japanese,

The zh_TW locale got rid of that problem, but I still wasn't 100% happy with the result. In the end I decided to stick with the ja locale and remove the qm files, but keeping libsl.qmid as I'm used to the Japanese date system (after 10 years you get used to anything :-)).

There were a number of other "fixes" around, cacko rom has some extra libs that supposedly allow Eng style dates in the Sharp Calendar, but as I use kopi and use the Japanese style dates in everyday life I haven't really looked at chaging much recently

Hummm. I'm getting the opposite. IE - EN locale is making certain fonts BIGGER compared to JP, while not changing other fonts or icon sizes.

See the attachment jpg. (Top of each pair, with smaller fonts, is jp - lower is en)

ONLY en causes this effect (of the locale codes that I have tried so far). And I'd really like to figure out how to get the larger fonts sizes but keep the Japanese otherwise (G).

Have you changed fonts by chance or are you still using the stock Sharp fonts?

Stock Sharp fonts, Stu.

First noticed the effect on TriSoft's NANDs. Both an old v1.20 (I think) & new v1.40. Then duplicated it on a "pure" v1.40 created by zimage & loader from Sharp Japan download. All with stock fonts.

Tumnus says the QT font selection is more or less hard coded (as I feared). I'd like to find out somehow what fonts QT is using, where (maybe where or how the selections are controlled?), so that I could do a little creative surgury to get the bigger font size but retain the other Japanese chars.

Ideas?

Here's the Japanese version.

The fonts in English seem a little fatter than the Japanese ones but otherwise they look the same.

I'll have to do a reformat and try again with a fresh system.

Hummmm. You can tell they use two different fonts in "en" & "jp" if you look at the "M" in "TextMaker". Squnched together in the "jp" and wider spaced in the "en". And the slash in the zero with the "jp" (among other diffs).

But the font *size* appears to be more or less equivalent.

I wonder if its the Appearance settings. You are in Bluzes. Let me try switching that & will report back briefly.

Changing Appearance does not do anything. Also rotation to portrait retains size differences.

Can you PM or email me the ls -l list from /usr/QtPalmtop.rm/lib/fonts?

I'll compare files size and dates and let you know if there are any differences.

Off to you as a ZIP attachment. Ignore the first one. Fingers hit send before brain hit "attach" (G).

A little trial & error has determined that:

"en" starts using

helvetica_180_50_t10.qpf

if this is removed, it "downsizes" through helvetica font files

if all helvetica are removed, it uses another, thinner "non-Japanese" font


"ja" uses

lcfont_100_50_t10.qpf


"zh_TW" is looking for

ariel_140_50_t10.qpf

but defaults to the lcfont when the ariel isn't found


So it seems, at this point, that it would require building a new font to get both the large roman chars and the Japanese chars. Crud.

BTW - noticed that both your "en" & "ja" fonts in the Uninstaller screen shots are closer in size to my "en" than to my TINY "ja" fonts in same.
