Familiar 0.8
« on: December 13, 2004, 04:26:04 pm »
Anyone else tried Familiar 0.8 pre yet. Based on OZ GPE. I had a quick try earlier and it was very usable considering the last GPE rom I installed on my 5500. I didn't have time to download any packages for it so my experience was only with the base install from www.handhelds.org . I tried setting network connection with wireless card and although I could get it connected with WEP while docked in USB configuration went astray when disconnected from USB. The feeds are available but as I said I didn't have time to test.

By the way I just noticed there is a bootstrap image aswell for Collie users but Corgi has bootstrap, opie and gpe images. Anyone know when Collie users can get hold of Opie image. Release date is supposed to be before christmas so get testing.

The official releases are now available at:

ftp://ftp.handhelds.org/distributions/fam.../v0.8.0/install

Any hints on how to install it on a 5500?  A google search for a Familiar-type boot loader for the Z turned up lots of noise,  but no obvious signal.

familiar is only for the iPAQs.

As far as I understand, it's mainly a naming difference (familiar = iPAQ, OZ = Zaurus), with a few other differences to account for the different flashing method, lack of a hardware keyboard and other hardware differences, and newer kernels.

Use the OZ version on your 5500.

Actually they are making images for the Zaurus now because the OE build system has made this possible. I use this on my iPAQ and really like it. I have tried it on my collie and poodle, but prefer to use the OZ build.

You can not use the CRL bootloader on a collie. If you want to give it a try, change the name of the opie-image-collie-xxx.rootfs.jffs2 to initrd.bin and use a kernel (zImage) from the oz3.5.2 official d/l site. Follow the proper OZ install instructions for a collie.

Please note, if you have any questions or problems use the Familiar at handhelds mailing list or familiar on irc as the images are not supported by the developers here. It would make things too complicated for bug fixing here... but that's just my opinion.

My apologies, I'd not realised that this was possible.
