Sharp PC-Z1 NetWalker / Zaurus Is Dead .... Long Living Zaurus Aka Pc-z1
« on: September 03, 2009, 08:02:13 pm »
Anyone remember the website in Japan that would ship z's and presumably the new z1 and other jap goods for 10 percent more than the cheapest price in Japan.  I bought my z860 from them after a rec on this board years ago and even had a good experience when I needed to send it back to Japan for repair.

Wish I could upgrade my middle aged memory.  Thx

For me the hard drive is a rule out.  Probably a higher risk of breakage from being dropped which with me is inevitable.  SSD probably faster and quieter.  I'm waiting on the SSD drive models coming out soon.

Zaurus - pdaXrom / So Close | Bt Dun
« on: December 20, 2007, 10:18:55 am »
There is also the "idiots" approach of using the cacko rom to establish your BT connection and then copying the settings (bluetooth folder and PPP folder, both in etc) to your more finicky rom or OS.

Hope this helps someone.

Off Topic forum / Which Distro To Try
« on: May 27, 2007, 02:34:29 am »
FWIW I'm trying dreamlinux today.  It is a debian based distro using XFCE disguised with the best art I have seen and beryl.  Heavily influenced by mac

General Discussion / Burned Out Screen, Loose Cable Or?

Will do except I lack the courage to try this myself.  I had a local computer store take the Z apart once although that time I needed to send it back to Japan for repair.  I will post the outcome this time.  Thanks so much.

My c860 which may have been dropped one time too many has alternating horizontal blue and black bars when I reboot and login.  Then the colors look washed out although text is still readable.  Photos have bars too.

Anyone have a dx or tx for these symptoms.  Thanks

Cxx0 General discussions / C700 Is Unstable And Slow
« on: February 18, 2007, 11:01:24 am »
I have a c700 and a c860.  Both cacko and pdaxrom are surprisingly usable on the c700 as long as you have a swap file activated (cacko has a memory manager tab).  The extra memory in the later Zs makes a huge diff but the c700 can be stable and not slow.  Once swap is activated you'd still hit annoying bugs like not being able to put the Z to sleep with the kdepim on.  But still quite usable.  Cacko and PDAXROM has some kernal feature having to do with preemptive multitasking that brings the speed up to the other Zs.  There is a full and lite Cacko but even the full one rocks the c700.  Good luck

Software / Korgnanizer Pim / Kopi Still Alive?

I assumed that Kopi is still alive and well as part of kde's kontact.  Still my most useful and favorite zaurus application.

General Discussion / Is There Ever Going To Be A New Z
« on: October 16, 2006, 06:33:18 pm »
Anyone have any speculation on if and  when Sharp will introduce another Zaurus.  Am I wrong in thinking that a model with X86 chip (and usual wishlist, larger screen, thiner form factor, bluetooth, wireless G,,,) that could run linux or windows xp would crush most blackberrys and UMPCs.

Maybe they should change the name of the company to "not so sharp".

As is I'm stuck waiting for a UMPC that people will confuse with sushi, Averatec Ahi.

General Discussion / Conics Or Pricejapan

My SL-C1000 from PriceJapan took 5 days from payment to reception in Spain.
Some accesories from Conics took 13 days from payment to reception.

FWIW I had a good experience with PriceJapan service.  As you would expect it took about a month to get c860 repaired because of the back and forth to japan.  Also, the email communication for service is less than sales.

Pricejapan rocks

Zaurus - pdaXrom / Sl 5600 Support?

Where I look it says 5500 and 5000d so I assume there is no PDAXROM for the 5600

My two main PDA applications on PDAXROM are dillo and korganizer / kopi.  Is there a version of korganizer for gpe/oz.

Sorry if I am missing something
