Zaurus - pdaXrom / No Sound After Install Of R197-sp8
« on: December 23, 2007, 01:17:18 pm »

Well, the title says all... r197@C860-SP8. I did search the forum but I did not find anything. It's just that my volume is zero and I cannot move it up.

Hi, perhaps a bit late, but have you tried alsamixer? Open a shell and start alsamixer, turn off the "Mute" on the mixer channel (using the "m"-key"). That is the same for all versions of pdaXrom I tried so far.

Zaurus - pdaXrom / Should I Use R197 On C860
« on: July 12, 2007, 05:29:29 am »
Hi,

when I first installed R197, SP8 was already available, so I haven't tried another combination. Here is howto install:

I already had R121 with uboot installed, so I didn't have to reinstall uboot. But that's what you should have to do first.
Make NAND backup.
Go into "emergency boot" by disconnecting all power sources + battery and holding "OK" for some time while plugging power back in.
Insert cf/sd card, go to /mnt/[card|cf]/ and run ./install .
Install SP8 (ipkg install)
Install what you need (I wrote a script to install things like rox, gnumeric, kopi/kapi, wpa_supplicant, firefox, wellenreiter, ...)

I use gnumeric, kapi/kopi, firefox and mplayer a lot and I found no real problems in R197, it's stable for me.

Zaurus - pdaXrom / Should I Use R197 On C860
« on: July 10, 2007, 08:23:25 am »
Hi,

I never tried beta1 on my C860 so I don't know if R197 is better but everything I need works fine on R197 (with SP8).

I think it is worth trying.

Zaurus - pdaXrom / Wifi-radar Not Working
« on: July 07, 2007, 10:51:20 am »
Hi,

I was not able to get the scanning working on my machine. There is probably an error in the driver for the card or scanning is not properly included in the interface. The card itself supports scanning, wellenreiter works perfect.

The other functionality, setting up a network and connecting to it, works fine now with me. I use wpa_supplicant since I have a router with WPA-PSK. My settings are:

Code: [Select]
Wireless device wlan0
Scan Timeout 10
Use speak-up: no
Commit required: no
Ifup required: yes

Network Name
Mode Managed
Channel auto
Key
Security restricted
Use WPA
Driver wext
Automatic network configuration (DHCP)
I will use wifi-radar instead of my old script, it's much more convinient and the existing network set-up does not support wpa. But it would be nice to have scanning available in wifi-radar.

Climber,

I only had a few minutes but I found out that the error message "Interface doesn't support scanning" comes from

iwlist scan

wifi-radar seems to just call the standard wireless utilities and one of them, iwlist, seems not to support scanning. It would be interesting to know if someone else uses wifi-radar and is able to use the scanning. The question ist: Is it just the combination of the drivers and network-card or is scanning through iwlist generally not possible on pdaXrom.

Hi climber,

I got the same warning message as you on an earlier version of pdaXrom but this is really just a warning. Wireless worked fine then, but I didn't use wpa on that ROM-version.

On R121 I used wpa_supplicant, but without wifi-radar. It worked fine but it was difficult to add a new wlan and I had to use my own scripts.

I will give wifi-radar a try, it seems to do exactly what I need (if it does it  )

As I said: I just installed the new pdaXrom-version and everything works except wireless. I'm quite busy at the moment but as soon as possible I will try to solve the problem. But: No, at the moment I have no idea how to fix it. I will start by checking that all required processes run properly and that the device-names are used consistantly.

Hi climber,

I just installed R197 and the SP8, found that wifi-radar ist already included there and so I gave it a try.

My idea was that wifi-radar scans for available wlans and helps me to connect, but I have the same problems as you. I only had some minutes yesterday evening and I didn't get a proper connection then. Hopefully this evening I have some more time to play with it.

When I start wifi-radar from command-line I see error-messages:
Code: [Select]
wifi0    Interface doesn't support scanning : Bad address

. Got current IP  False
Got current SSID
until I stop it.

Why did you set  "Use WPA: Driver=ipw"? This is not in the list of drivers in my wpa_supplicant. I only have "hostap", "atmel", "wext" and "wired". As I understand it, it should be either "wext" or "hostap"?

Zaurus - pdaXrom / Which Wpa-compatible Card To Buy?
« on: April 27, 2007, 09:36:14 am »
Hi,

I am quite happy with my D-Link DCF-660W. It is quite old, I already used it together with my previous router which supported only WEP.
When I got my new router I thought I would have to buy a new card for my Z or try to da a firmware-upgrade, but it worked right away.

I just had to set up wpa_supplicant.

Zaurus - pdaXrom / Problem With R121 And Sl-c860
« on: March 08, 2007, 10:31:13 am »
Hi

and thanks, Capn_Fish!!!!

The mouse button fix worked for me. I asked about how to fix the mouse button problem in this forum several times but never got an answer.

"69" was correct for me (C860) and I only had to change it on two places.

I didn't change ~/Choices/input.cfg, it was correct.

After running inputconfig.py and restarting X it worked!

Thanks again!

Btw: I find, even with a C860 r121 ist the best. WPA works fine, large SD cards work fine, I have Gnumeric running and KApi/KOpi, Firefox, ...

I found no other ROM that does all that.

Hi louigi600,

just for info:

If I do a "dmesg | grep -i alsa" I get nothing, so it must be specific to your Z.

I spent a lot of time looking for solutions for getting everything to work but now it really does!
I also tried other roms, but came back to pdaXrom. For my needs it is the best rom!

I don't hink I have audio on my C3100 through the speaker, but I do through headphones. You could try that as a starting point.

I wish things were like you said ... but unfortunatly I did have the headphones plugged inti the 3.5 mm plug (same that I use successfully with cacko).

The problem might be quite a little more complucated because there was also other problems I noticed later (like D+M menu dissapeared).

Hi David,

did you try alsamixer? There are some minor issues with the latest pdaXrom. The solutions I found somwhere here in the forum.

By default the sound is muted. Try

Code: [Select]
TERM=xterm-color
alsamixer

and unmute the speaker using "m" on the corresponding channel. You can also use alsamixer to set the volume.

Zaurus - pdaXrom / Working Cards With Wpa And Rc121
« on: December 11, 2006, 05:44:10 am »

Hi all,

I am unable at this point to get my Ambicom card to with with RC121 and use it on my WPA-PSK setup.
I have read that a few people have gotten some other cards to work.
I know that my firmware on my card is old. 1.34 and I need  much newer firmware but I can't update it, no luck.
So if someone could update my card for me or I'll buy a card that should work.

Can anyone recommend a card that will work with RC121 and WPA-PSK.

Thanks in advance.

Hi,

I have a D-Link DCF-660W which I bought more than a year ago. It works great with WPA-PSK. I didn't do a firmware upgrade. On the card it says F/W Ver.: 1.7.4 which is exactly what the software reports.

btw is there a commandline utility to scan for wireless networks? kismet doesn't work for me and wifi-radar chugs..
[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=148505\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]

Hi,

I have never seen a commandline utility, but did you try "Wellenreiter". It has a nice GUI and it did work well under Beta3. I have not installed it on Rc121 yet because there was no need for me to do it so far.

tbh I just use MAC filtering on my WAP, is there any reason why WPA is more secure than this?
[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=148495\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]

Hi,

Mac filtering is a good addition to any encryption but is not really secure. On most devices you can change the MAC. Someone just needs to read the MAC while you are connected and use the same MAC afterwards.

I have an older symbol card too.  I remember reading somewhere that the symbol card would not be able to handle WPA because of the firmware.

Hi,

I read that it really depends on the firmware. On my Dlink 660 and on any other Prism based chipset card you shold have station firmware of at least version 1.7.4. This version was on my card already, so for me there was no problem. How to find out which version is on your card and how to upgrade you can find here:

[a href=\"http://linux.junsun.net/intersil-prism/]http://linux.junsun.net/intersil-prism/[/url]

I am glad that I already had the firmware version required for WEP!

Cheers, Jan
