Sharp ROMs / SL 5500 TCK ROM 2.0 Aplha 3 with Home on SD script
« on: August 12, 2005, 07:47:16 pm »
I'm afraid I've given up on tkrom 2 -  couldn't get it to be stable; shame, it was excellent in every other way. I ended up using the Hybrid ROM with Qtopia 1.6.2, and it's almost perfect.

Cheers,

Hi Chris.
Have you gotten the hancom apps to work with Hybrid ROM and Qtopia 1.6.2?  I've ended up the same as you and keep coming back to the hybrid, but I'm still using Qtopia 1.5.4 because of the spreadsheet, and word programs.

Thanks

Software / How To Unpack A Large File...

I've renamed the file to foods.db.tar.gz and run command

rename it to foods.db.gz, then gunzip the file.  ignore the part about the tar.

It would be nice if someone could update the database, which is on R17 now.

Thanks Ken,
I still get "permission denied"  though.  I checked the file permissions and made sure ALL permissions were checked, but I still get denied.

Software / How To Unpack A Large File...
« on: July 02, 2005, 08:23:41 pm »
Hi folks,

I downloaded the ipk for the NFDB from
http://www.warmi.net/zaurus/nfdb.shtml
for use on my 5000d running the Cacko rom.  I DID run into the trouble mentioned on the site...
the "foods.db" file is where it belongs, but is still packed.  The author said to rename that file to .tar.gz and then ungzip.  I'm afraid I don't know how to go about this.

I've renamed the file to foods.db.tar.gz and run command
gunzip /home/QtPalmtop/pics/nfdb/FOODS.db.tar.gz
from advancedFM (with root privileges), and get errors.
I've renamed it foods.tar.gz and tried it and still get errors.  (unintelligible message)
I unzipped it from a desktop and coppied the file to CF, but failed to copy from CF to my (1 gb) SD card where it's installed.
I ran gunzip on FOODS.tar.gz from "run command with output" and got "...FOODS.tar  permission denied".  Same with FOODS.db.tar.gz.
Can anyone help me?

Sharp ROMs / Hybrid Rom documentation

I've played with Cacko Hybrid ROM a while ago and I've found out that I like much  features it has (home on jffs2, qtopia installable to RAM, jffs2, SD), but I didnt like Qtopia look and feel. So basically I took ROM part, added some software in it (patched kernel IRDA for T610 phones, ssh, midnight commander, etc ...) and took Qtopia part from TKCrom 2.0 alpha, made some changes (added cyrillic keyboard from Cacko 1.22, neocalc, time applet, unicode fonts, changed install script to be Qtopia installable also on CF card (i didnt had SD)) and now I'm quite happy SL 5500 user. The rom has features from hybrid but is fully compatible with Sharp 3.10 sync appz (intellisync, qtopia for win), has ipkg old and new, I can use Hancom, Jeode, Opera packages from TKC rom and everything is working quite well. Now I'm trying to add bluetooth support to this ROM and create packages for other Qtopias (1.6.2, 2.1.1) to install and switch between them. If someone is curious I can upload this ROM somewhere for you to try.
[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=81963\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]

Merli,  I'd love to try it!  Please do let us know if you find a place to upload it!

Thanks

Edit:  I forgot to mention, I have a 5000d, so I'd really need a 32-0 kernel.  Is that possible or way too much work?

Sharp ROMs / Qtopia Rom 2.1.1

Just tried Qtopia ROM 2.1.1 beta on my 5500. Unfortunately, after flashing, it would not turn on again. I followed the instruction, even tried flashing it again, still can not turn on.
I don't have a CF card reader, I'll have to find one before I can put any other ROM back. Just wondering if anyone's having similar experience? What should I do now?

Did press the reset button after flashing, and remove the cf before attempting restart?

Sharp ROMs / Battery Applet And Hybrid
« on: May 12, 2005, 10:17:20 am »
I think if you go to the launcher and unmark the new items, exit the program, then start the launcher again to mark the new applets as showing,  they should work.  It has for me.

As for Hancom - I don't know yet.  The notes said you could get them to work easily by creating a symlink to quickexec...but I haven't found quickexec in order to create a symlink to it.  It must be there somewhere though, because other apps do quickexec.

Sharp ROMs / Qtopia Rom 2.1.1
« on: May 12, 2005, 12:17:39 am »
Well,
I thought I'd try using this ROM for real - thought maybe by moving files to SD and making links (as LPotter suggested), I could overcome the limited memory of my 5000d even without the better 32-0 kernel.

So I started trying to install my old favorites, like Qtopia AdvancedFM,  batteryapplet (the one that lets you create and activate a swap file), etc.
But noting seems to really install.  The package manager seems to indicate they install without error, but there is never a desktop link, whether I install to "internal memory" or to SD.  I'd use the file browser to check if the files are there, but am rather stuck as I can't install one.  (and I'm a linux newbie).  I could hunt something down with the terminal, but since I don't know exactly where I want to look, this would take a lot of time going through each directory with ls.

I think the files must really have installed as when I tried installing AdvancedFM to internal memory, I got an "extremely limited memory" message immediately afterwards.  That probrably means I'm just missing some symlinks somewhere if I'm understanding things correctly.

LPotter,
If having a newbie trying out the ROM is helpful enough to you to warrent your taking the time to help with silly stuff like this, I'll keep testing.  Otherwise, I suppose it may be best for me to wait for the final version with the 32-0 kernel.

Accessories / Looking For A Stylus?
« on: April 20, 2005, 06:24:11 pm »
I bought a belkin lighted stylus first, for around $6 from buy.com.  It's great for being able to use the keyboard in the dark!
Then I saw these, and bought 3 because they're the same price as just  a battery. (not that mine was running low).

the Lowdown:
Belkin
You really need some kind of lathe to make the  belkin work in your zaurus.  I honed mine down and provided the snap ring on just my wood-lathe - it's not too difficult working with aluminum. but it will stick out about 1/4 when all is finished.  The led is quite bright.  I can type on the keyboard in complete dark by holding this stylus in my mouth.

Saitek
This saitek fits perfectly into the tube and seats with a satisfying click right out of the package, but also sticks out about 1/4. You get a pocket full of "ends" so you could try cutting a few down if you really want it to be flush.  It uses an amber led that's not very bright at all.  But hey, if all you want is a stylus, it's hard to beat a nice aluminum one for $3 shipped.
update:  in complete dark, this led has the best coverage at only 1cm from the buttons.  It can only illuminate 6 buttons across on my 5000d.  If you really want the light, get the  belkin and make it fit.  If you don't care about the light (or want to steal the batteries), this is a nice inexpensive stylus.

(This is actually another store front for surpluscomputers.com.   You can buy straight from surpluscomputers main store, but it's a dollar more and I don't know about free shipping)

Software / Kde-pim/pi 2.1.0 Available!

A chorus of thanks Zautrix!

I can't find the forum any longer though, so I guess I'll make a couple of requests here (or they may be questions in that it's already taken care of, but I don't know about it)

- is there/can there be a way to assign a category to all entries when importing a ics file?    (I'm doing this by hand currently - and it's a pain + definitely something a computer does better)

- I ask the above because there are times I would like to be able to mass remove a selected set of entries.  (like an ics import I decided I didn't like).  Is there/ can there be a way to delete selected items?  Find comes up with such a nice list, but I have to go through them one-by-one!

General Discussion / Can Someone Help With Symlinks?
« on: April 18, 2005, 11:22:06 pm »
Under the hybrid Rom, a number of apps "can't find" their executables.  I need help figuring out where and to what to make symlinks.

Here's an example:
a program with the following desktop file:

[Desktop Entry]
Comment=Track and Graph Data
Exec=tracker.elf
Icon=HISTOGR
Type=Application
Name=Tracker
CanFastload=0
HidePrivilege=0

installs to /opt/Qtopia  (all the Qtopia 2.1 apps will do the same, so I'd like to figure this out)
On the hybrid Rom, this is physically installed to the path:
/var/mnt/card/opt/Qtopia
so the desktop entry is under /apps/Applications/tracker.desktop
and the executible is under /bin/tracker.elf

Now the desktop file is found and included on the launcher, and the graphic from the same path under /pics, is found and used.  Why can't it find tracker.elf and what links do I need to add where for programs like this to be found?

In case it's helpful, all the other files are installing to the actual location of
/var/mnt/card/opt/QtPalmtop

/opt
    /QtPalmtop
        /apps
/Applications (most desktop files are here)
            ...etc
/bin  (most files are installed here)
        ...etc
   /Qtopia
       /apps
           /Applications
               tracker.desktop
       /bin
           tracker.elf

Thanks for any help you can give a linux newbie

General Discussion / Nand Backup On 5000d
« on: April 17, 2005, 05:47:58 pm »
I followed the directions found here:
http://www.owen.org/zaurus/nand.php

and get nothing more than a flashing yellow battery light.  No "service menu" as I've read about.  I've read that the service menu can be wiped out.  Is it possible that's what happened to mine?  (I got my machine off of ebay)

I'm trying to find a good reliable way to back-up my system as well as my data, and am not having much luck.

Suggestions anyone?

Sharp ROMs / Qtopia Rom 2.1.1
« on: April 17, 2005, 05:30:51 pm »
Hey everyone, Cancel works fine now!

LPotter,

The more I play with this ROM, the more I appreciate it.  THANK YOU

I like:
  - the way the icons bob when activated
  - the nice clear hourglass when waiting (like 1.6, but unlike 1.5)
  - not to mention how nice and clear and neat everything looks (I notice this particularly as my eyes are having more trouble these days...)
  - The fact that you can show details on packages in the package manager  (like 1.6)
  -  The fact that everything is installed by ipk and thus, can easily be uninstalled (by those of us who are not that familiar with unix - for others, it's always easy I gather) if there is something with similar capability that we like better. (again, like 1.6 but unlike 1.5)
  - The choice in how icons are displayed in the launcher (like 1.6)
  - the plugin manager is nice
  - The today view is quite fetching.  (though in the world of comprimise, I don't know that I'd give up the extra functions of ko/pi for it.  It is pretty enough to make me think about it anyway)
  - The video player is nice to have.  I haven't tried to play videos much, but have been jealous nevertheless, that kino doesn't work on the 5000d.
  - I like the music player having check boxes beside all the titles.
  - I like being able to adjust volume (with large buttons) from the player
  -  I like the built-in style adjustments ( 'cuz I always add that anyway   )
  -

Some things would be nice if different:
  - The music player would be so much better with a (large) button for turning off the screen (and have it all turn back on when the cancel button was hit).  The older media player had a (small) button for this, and it made playing mp3's in the car SO much better.
  - I find the documents tab rather useless as it is.  I liked the one in 1.5 a lot better.  Is there a way to add categories?  If there were, that would change things, as it would then be the means of categorizing mp3s for playlists.  (and other documents, but music benefits the most)  As is is,  "business personal unfiled" just doesn't do much for me, and the tab takes a long time to load (I have large CF cards   ).  For file browsing itself, your advanced FM and treeview have things covered nicely.
Actually, could there be a way to enable/disable the documents tab regardless?  That would be very helpful.
  - Umm,  whatever happened to that great little "Tab Settings" program in 1.5 that dissappeared in 1.6 (and 2.1 beta)?  Could we have that  back again?  Tab manager works, but to be honest, I really like the origional Tab Settings a lot better.

Are you looking for bugs?
System info just refused to load on my just now (but gave a very nice error message instead of just hanging).  Said it was due to application error 11.
I also am getting "critical low memory" messages, which just reinforces the fact that I can't use this without the 0 - 32 configuration.   32 mgs of ram is really skimping, and 15 is really pretty unusable.

The QT logo on the startbutton is too big on my machine.  It only shows the bottom right quarter of the Q.

Woops, software packages was just terminated due to app error 11 (trying to install the memory applet which lets me add swap files easily).  and then hung.  somthing tells me "error 11" is related to lack of memory.
After reboot, I have the memory applet installed, but it apparently fails to activate the swapfile on either SD or CF.
(update, swap file works fine on a reinstall - probrably leftover "stuff" on the SD last time)
Thanks!

GREAT,  Thank you LPotter.  I'm not sure when I'll have a free moment, but I'm definitely going to give this a try!  I did find the source files.  I tried installing several just "out of the box", but it isn't quite that simple.

Sharp ROMs / Hybrid Rom And Qtopia 2.1
« on: April 15, 2005, 01:29:51 pm »
Well,
The description sure makes it sound like one should be able to "swap in" the new Qtopia 2.1 into this install.
Can anyone help me figure out how to do this?
