Angstrom & OpenZaurus / Poky: The Perfect Zaurus Distro?
« on: October 08, 2006, 10:09:30 pm »
I have to give poky credit in that to easier to get a build env up then the standard openembedded.  Have one command to run and getting everything into a clean directory structure witht he scripts needed to start building is nice.  Though since I have a 6k it would require modification(pulling the missing .bb, .conf and .include files from OE) to make it work for my Z, but I think I can easily take some of the bb files they are using and put them back into OE if I find any packages that I think I want to try.  Not sure how well the svn structure would work for someone like me that has a angstrom, dev and ipaq-3600 builds setup, but for some that is just wanting to build stuff for one device this idea might now be a bad idea to get some a build env for building packages.

This PIM based on EDS might be something to try.  Should be interesting to see how that works on my e-image and how well it syncs.

From what I can see it will work for building images for c7x0, akita, spitz, nokia770, qemuarm, and cmx270.

Just my sleepiy thoughs.

Off Topic forum / Motorola A780 Or A1200/ming
« on: September 02, 2006, 11:04:28 pm »
Well I am now the owner of a black motorola Ming a1200.  So far inthe last 36 hours since I recieved it I have fallen in love with it.  It is smaller then my treo 180(basically smaller then my v551), but it has more functions then my treo every did.

I still have not synced it with my mac, or even found a way to sync it with my mac at this point.  I have checked 2 of my email account through it and even replyed to messaged(it will be nice to have all my mail boxes in the palm of my hand).

I still need to look into what other programs are avalible and also what openezx can do for me if anything.

Heh, I'm a typical consumer. What I want, is what I've got. . With just a few tweaks.
[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=139568\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]
I guess that about sums up my position too... a better linux clamshell than my 3100 and one for which software doesn't have to be reverse engineered, or simply guessed at.
[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=139582\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]

I many ways I have to agree that I like the current options if they just had those few tweaks(SL-C3200 with wifi, bluetooth and GSM/EGPRS).  That is what I need right now, and with the fact I go through phones and PDAs every year to 2 years that maybe what I need now.

Since I just bought a motorola ming, to me I see the PocketPenguin project as what I will want to get and uses a year or two from now, so my opinions and views may be a little different.  Also when I got my sl6k 2 years ago it became my primary computer for almost a year(my ibook replaced it).  I do have to say I miss having something as small as my 6k as my primary computer, so I guess I am not a typical consumer either.

Though I really can not say if I would need a device that has 5.1 surrond sound but if I say this as my primary machine what I could hook up to my 42in display using the hdmi and uses my frogpad or other bluetooth keyboard it might be nice to be able to have the 5.1, video on lan is where I see that useful.  But I think that option might be more of something out of a dock maybe.

I guess most of it goes back to how people plan to uses the device(s) that are created.  In may ways the ranking does make since since it lets us know what feature people plan to uses.  If we are basing the device off of what the masses want then this would be the way to go.  If we are basing the device off of what would be nice to have then we need to see what can be include and see if it is even practical.

Just my thoughts durning my first cup of coffee this morning.

if you start using a frogpad would you mind giving us some insight about how quicky its use becomes as seconf nature as a qwerty?
[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=139537\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]

I am hoping to order my frogpad in the next few weeks so I will let you knwo what I think.  I do have to admit that I am not a touch typest, or at least I do not use the correct fingers on keys and look at my had every once and a while to see what I am typing.  So for me it will be training my self to learn to type and breaking 20 years of bad habits.

one idea that i have had )not sure how much you will like it) is to use a corded aproch where a letter is made up of 1 or more button pushes (common keys are one button, less common are two or more buttons pushed at the same time)

the advantage is that you could have full sized keys and it should help with some anoying key combos (try doing a ctrl+c without sticky keys on a cxx00), the problems however are that you would need to learn a new keyboard, maximum typing speed is slowed down slightly

i will of course not be shiping it unless its specified but i belive that one or two people may be intrested, mainly those who are into wearable computers, with a screen rotation it would allow you to have your computer and your keyer in one

any other proposals, normal or otherwise, for the keyboard
[div align=\"right\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]

so would this be something like the [a href=\"http://www.frogpad.com/]frogpad(http://www.frogpad.com/)[/url].  Considering that I am looking at switching to using the frogpad as my main keyboard on all my machines this would interest me if we could get the frogpad as keyboard layout.

Looking nice. Do people use this gui on a regular basis. Is it stable yet?
[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=139410\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]

I uses e17 everyday on my z, but I am not using pdaxrom any more so I can not speech for how stable the newer updates are, but when I ran pdaxrom everyday(about a month) with e17 it worked great.  I only really uses vim, xcalc and xmms when I was using pdaxrom.  I have been trying to get equate working for my calculator, exhibit for images and eclair working as my media play but I have not got that working yet.  I may have to try pdaxrom again, I just wished that gefechtsdienst provided an sl6k installer.

The cpu, bluetooth, memory, cf / sd slots, etc. all go into a pcmcia card shell (modified slightly so someone doesn't accidently try shoving it into a laptop...).  This is the core module.  The screen, keyboard, battery charger / power supply all goes into a sperate shell.  That way, if someone wants a larger clamshell / mini laptop, they can get that shell.  If you want a tablet, use a tablet shell.  A phone would use a phone shell.  That way, you can take your core module, and put it into the device shell that is appropriate for what you want to do that day.
[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=139051\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]

I have to admit I like this idea myself.  A core module that I could keep in my phone/clam shell when I am out and about and then plug in to my desktop when I am at my desk and continue what I am currently work on, sounds great to me(This is how I try to use my 6k right now with x11vnc).

If this is possable it could make it possible to satisfy more people.  HTe core module has the capability to do all of the neat things like finger print reader but only if the shell has it will it be used.

I really have not read all of the threads in PocketPenguin so I have not seen the post about not going modular derekp modular idea even make since for this project?

i guess i will go for the 80:20 rule (or perhaps 90:10) so that i know when to stop putting more time per week into it

I would tell you build in what you want to have.  Since you are looking at an open design it make is possable for others to rework the design to work for them.  I just wish I knew enough and had the time to help.  For now I will uses my 6k along with a motorola ming soon and try to learn more.

6000 - Tosa / Rom Discussion On Tosa

Is there any other rom with wifi working out of the box or from the connect icon for the 6000..it seams a shame to waste that feature and have to input script to use it every time.
[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=139037\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]

I have not found one other then the QT based off the sharp rom.  I have had some sucess with wlanfe and wlanfe2 but they only give me a gui frontend to work with the wlan-ng driver, they do not search out for the networks around.  Though it might not be that hard to add that functionalitly since you can uses:

Code: [Select]
wlanctl-ng wlan0 dot11req_scan bsstype=any bssid=ff:ff:ff:ff:f
f:ff ssid= scantype=both channellist="01:02:03:04:05:06:07:08:09:0a:0b:00:00:00" minchanneltime=300  maxchanneltime=500 append=true

I even have a script(found it on the internet) that prints out all of the networks around me.  I have not had time to make it into something better such as a efl or gtk app.

Here is my wlan_scan script:

Code: [Select]
#!/bin/sh
PATH=/sbin:$PATH

ChannelList="01:02:03:04:05:06:07:08:09:0a:0b:00:00:00"
ChannelMinTime=300
ChannelMaxTime=500

modprobe ohci_hcd

result=`wlanctl-ng wlan0 lnxreq_ifstate ifstate=enable`
exit_code=$?

                       eval "rate=$supprate$i"
                       if [ "x$rate" != 'xno_value' ]; then
                               support_rates="$rate $support_rates"

[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=137918\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]

I thought I created a script to bring wlan0 up and down but I can not find it in my backup.  I want to say the script loaded the modules and then used dhcpcd to get an ip.    Sorry I can not be much help.

I forgot abou the fact that I set my root partition to 45mb so that I have enough space to install programs.  I do this even on my OZ setup now since e-image takes up 33mb for install so only e-image-core work on the 6k without building a custom kernel.

I flashed to pdaXrom 1.1.0beta1 today. However, startx only gives me three xterm w/o scroll bar, not to mention it does not fit the screen and key mapping is not complete, etc...  Is this what supposed to be? Do I have to configure from scratch while other models have a nice default graphical rom? Am I missing something?
[div align=\"right\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]

I uses [a href=\"https://www.oesf.org/index.php?title=How_to_install_pdaXrom]https://www.oesf.org/index.php?title=How_to_install_pdaXrom[/url] to get pdaxrom up and running on my 6k.  Then I follow http://gefechtsdienst.de/uman/Zaurus_C-860...etup/index.html so that I can have e17 on my Z when I am running pdaxrom.

6000 - Tosa / 2.6.x Kernel?
« on: August 01, 2006, 10:45:05 am »
I would agree with vorondil28 that it is not release ready, but I have been using it on my tosa for several weeks now for my daily uses.  My uses is not that great at this point consisting mostly of note taking, watching videos, calculator and irc.

I would also recommend trying it, expecially if you are using OZ already.

Hello All
I read that the best linux for laptoop is : ubuntu, a new distro of linux.
Anyone can talk me if this is right or false. I don't konw it. only heared a frend talking about it.
And What is more importan if this is true, it exist for our Zaurus?
Thanks you!
[div align=\"right\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]

I did find a section of the wiki for ubuntu [a href=\"https://wiki.ubuntu.com/EmbeddedUbuntu]https://wiki.ubuntu.com/EmbeddedUbuntu[/url] that seems to look like there might be some truth behind the idea of ubuntu on the zaurus, but it looks like it is just theory right now.

Angstrom & OpenZaurus / X11 Forwarding?
« on: July 25, 2006, 11:22:58 pm »
On my zaurus I run:

     export DISPLAY=192.168.0.1:0.0

On my Mac or windows or Linux workstation(depends on which I am going to display to) I run:

     xhost +192.168.0.13

or if you are not worried about others open programs on your display:

     xhost +

192.168.0.13 is the IP for my Z
192.168.0.1 is the IP for my desktop

With this setup I only have to run the export command in each of my terms and then any command I run open to the desktop I DISPLAY exported to.

At least that is how I do it everyday...

I am trying to find or build kernel-module-uinput-2.6 for tosa so that I can uses my Targus IR keyboard and test zkbdd and kbdd to see if they work on Tosa with the 2.6 kernel.
[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=136383\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]

Ask for it to be included
[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=136384\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]

I can see it is included in the spitz, c7x0 and akita machine feeds so I am guessing I am doing something wrong when I am building linux-openzaurus or should it build with that?
