General Discussion / Want To Use My Sl-c1000, Any Ideas?

My typical use would be as an e-book reader (PDFs mostly), movies, and web browsing.  However, something I would really like to use it for is to manage a home control, monitoring, and security systems.  Would be a nice device to control lighting, temp, and access security cameras.  Really would like to get back into tinkering around again.

I haven't used my Z for over 2 years and I'd like to put it to use again.  Are there any distributions out there that will breathe some life into my Z and make it useful again?  

At one time, OpenZaurus and Ångström were up and coming and very promising.  Is there anything happening with these distros?

Is there any possibility of Android on the Z?  I thought I heard someone was working on it but don't know what progress has been made.

I am interested in anything that will make it useful and let me tinker again.  I bought an iPhone about 2 years ago and as you know, there isn't much you can tweak.  Even if you jailbreak, you are still limited.

Glad the site is still around.

Off Topic forum / Appreciating The Zaurus

I love my Zaurus too (C1000) and I'm seriously looking at putting Zubuntu on it to extend it's usefulness.  Zubuntu really makes it a netbook that you can put in your pocket.  I guess that would be called a pocketbook?

I also wish that Sharp would revive the Zaurus nameplate and enter this netbook game.  As you mentioned, their hardware designs are top-notch.  I would immediately buy a Sharp convertible touchscreen netbook, 7-9 inch screen, wifi, BT, etc.  Sharp could have it run Ubuntu or the upcoming Android (?) so they can stick to just designing hardware.  Oh well, until then I'll load up Zubuntu and see what kind of performance I get.

I've been following the Zubuntu discussion off and on and I'm now pulling my C1000 out of moth balls.  

Would some of you who have installed Zubuntu compare the performance to the latest Cacko (the last distro I installed)?  

Also, what applications are you running and how are they performing (browser, abiword, gnumeric, music/video players, doc viewers, calendar/todo app)?


Thanks in advance for your response and thanks to Cortez for working so hard to breathe new life into the old Z.

New products and alternatives / Is The Iphone 3g Your Next Zaurus?

I own an iPhone and for me it does not quite replace my Z, but I believe it soon will once the third party software starts coming out.  Like HoloVector, I've found that I can't do some things on my iPhone that I did on the Z: read/edit various formats of docs; use it as a portable drive; ebook reader; wide variety of games.  Other things I can do on the iPhone are by far the best you will get in a handheld: music; video; web browsing; ease of navigation.

Once the third party applications start rolling out to plug some of the holes, I believe it will easily replace the Z and with the SDK, those of you who are programmers should be able to produce some kick-butt applications that will easily be made available to all users of the iPhone/iPod touch through the 'App Store'.

General Discussion / Breathing Life Into An Old Z

Omro,

I have desired the same thing, something to jump start my C1K.  I thought Angstrom was going to be the answer but it seems to have stalled a bit.  Maybe someone familiar with the Angstrom development can inform us on how functional is it now in comparison to Cacko.  

Another possibility I had considered was replacing my Z and my phone with the Neo 1973 phone running the Linux based OpenMoko software.  From what I understand, OpenMoko is compiled in OpenEmbedded and most of the applications you currently run under Cacko should easily recompile under OpenMoko.  This would give you a very pocketable, linux based handheld without giving up your favorite applications.  The downside is the Neo 1973 only has a 2.8 inch screen and no physical keyboard.

I'm not sure if OpenMoko (minus the phone stuff) can or will be adapted to run on a Zaurus.  If so, this could be the punch you and I are looking for.

General Discussion / Zaurus Out Of Production?

Anyone heard any credible or not so credible rumors of Sharp either reviving and updating the Zaurus or producing another handheld device, other than the W-Zero or EM One platforms?

I recently read where Sharp just developed a very nice multi-touch LCD that has built-in optical sensors in each pixel.  Article said it would be able to act as a scanner and could even replace the keyboard.  How would you like an updated Zaurus with an LCD in place of the keyboard and the ability to program the keyboard LCD to any keyboard format or even a giant touch pad?

Why is there such a lack of excitement here about the Neo?  These phones are already being sold to developers, and the consumer model is scheduled to be released in Oct.

It has almost everything folks here are asking for.  Am I missing something?

I am one who is also interested in the Neo, but let's be honest, it is a good bit away from being a finished end-user product.  It is a developers dream platform (all open-source); unfortunately, I'm not much of a developer so I need a more stable and mature platform.

Now that you've mentioned the Neo, I will say this.  I think it has even more upside potential than the iPhone or the iPod Touch because it is truly a phone of the people, for the people, and by the people.  Unfortunately, that is also the major negative, will the open-source community produce quality apps for the device(s) and will people buy it in high enough quantities to justify continuing putting money into the effort?

It's a lot like the current state of operating systems (MS, Mac OSX, and Linux).  MS is everywhere and very usable, just not very fun.  OSX is sweet and clearly the best of the bunch as far as fit and finish, but it's development is tied to what Apple wants to put in and when.  Linux has the "potential" to be FAR better than either one but it is dependent on the community, which again means that the people can have an OS that is more responsive to their needs, 'if' someone gets around to coding it and polishing it up.

You all make good points that this device is lacking a few things many of us are accustomed to having and may not be a device you could switch to......today.  I believe what Apple has done in the iPhone and now the iPod Touch is created a new platform that will be the basis for future innovation.

Many of the things desired are software related --- easy fix.  There are a few hardware desires that would be nice (external expansion slot, usb, speakers/mic) that are not expensive items to add if they choose to.

Is it the perfect Z replace now?  No.  But the upside potential of this device is amazing and I hope they sell a ton of them so Apple will continue to improve it, because I see one in my pocket in the not so distant future.

I'm very, very interested.  However, if the iPhone software hacks are solid and I could use it on T-Mobile, the newly repriced 8GB iPhone at $399 looks even better.  I give up 8GB but I can replace my Z and my phone.

My only issue is that I like ebooks in various formats and there is not a reader on the iPhone or the iPod Touch.  You can read pdfs through Safari which is a plus.

My Z's days are numbered.  I'll own one of these Apple products before year end.

I would not be surprised to see this device being one of the target devices for Ubuntu Mobile Linux that is due out later this year.  The Ubuntu Mobile is native Linux, not embedded, but it will be tailored to run on and take advantage of the feature set found in the UMPC/MID devices.

Check out the Hugo Ortega pre-release review of the Shift.  Very nice implementation of 2 operating systems each running on their own processors.  I want this device!!!!!
