certainly annoying for people with 5000d,5500, and 5600's, or other embedded hardware that has 16mb flash chips.

and a waste of hardware and battery if you aren't even using the flash the device came with. 128mb is more than enough for an embedded system, and it's being wasted... why??? Why even bother with the device if you are not even using it to it's full potential.

That's a silly comment, and not at all true.
It takes a long time for phones to come to market, and western markets such as Europe and especially the US are slow to embrace new technologies.

There are more linux phones on the way (that run Qtopia BTW), I cannot comment on what and when.

There are a few linux phones out there, the Motorola's that Mickey posted, but also Phillips 968. There are more on their way also.

When i try to send files to my sd card via ftp, sometimes i am having errors.

when;
- file names have turkish characters like; çüğşÃ¶ıÇÖŞİÃœĞ
- if a file already exists with caps (example; trying to replace aBC.ogg with abc.ogg)

i am having errors,

is there any fix for that problem?

I'd like to see a small-systems environment tailored for screens from 320x240 to 800x600 recreated from scratch with the needs of embedded computing in mind. It should contain a set of convincing stock applications (PIM, Multimedia, Networking) that fit nicely into a no-less-but-astonishing UI, but should also contain a way to run "plain" X applications (for those geeks).

sounds like qtopia + xqt to me.

It should be using modern Linux technologies (like dbus, sysfs, udev) under the hood to create a snappy event based system with low power requirement. No polling is allowed in any case!

It should be fast.

It should be extensible -- but not too much. Since I'm the one preaching the choice-is-not-freedom-when-you-can-only-choose-from-insufficient-alternatives, I rather have a couple of killer apps than hundreds or thousands of sucky ones. Same goes for distributions btw and UI environments, btw.

Having to edit configuration files or dropping to the console must be a NO. NO! I mean it, really. NO NO NEVER!

Last but not least you need to make a comprehensive set of guidelines and a strong framework available in an SDK. To make it fun developing for the framework. Encourage multiple languages, but focus on one.

* don't have "Files" and "Folders" but a "Bag of Things" with search filters and tabs (e.g. ABC-DEF, Today-Yesterday-LastWeek)

Wasn't this why people didn't/don't like the DocTab (Sharp 1.xx and Current Opie)?

If it's well implemented it may work, but it depends what level of user you're aiming at. I do quite like being able to organise where my files are kept.

It wasn't popular because many people didn't know how categories work. It is outside of the well known 'desktop interface' paradigm (which doesn't work well on a small screen device), because it is designed to be simple. You can think of a category as a directory, if you like, only it doesn't have sub-categories.

Perhaps Trolltech will release some of the phone apps as GPL so we can use them on Zaurus with bluetooth phones or gsm/gprs adaptors like Audiovox or Enfora.

It'll be a cold that in hell when that happens, especially considering that trolltech doesn't even want qt/e4 to be gpl'ed (nobody buys their excuses anymore).

You dont have to believe the reasons why Trolltech hasn't released Qtopia (besides Qtopia Core) under the GPL. But if you would dig a bit deeper into the phone industry, you might find out it's not just excuses. Among other things, why do you think there are only installable java apps for phones? It's because operators are paranoid (with good measure) that someone could wreak havok on their private and highly regulated networks.

and what do you care, you seem to disrespect Trolltech any chance you can get.

Qt/Qtopia / Where Do I Begin?

Hello,

First of all, excuse my poor English as it's not my main language.

I would like to begin developing some software for my Zaurus (C760 and Cacko ROM). As I understood, Cacko's Rom is compatible with Sharp ROM, so I need the Official QTOPIA SDK (found here www.qtopia.net ). I would like to do it on a host computer running UBUNTU, so my questions are:

1) Do i need a toolchaing for cross compiling, or it's already included on qtopia sdk?

Yes, you will need an arm-linux-gcc 2.95 toolchain.

2) Does the QTOPIA SDK contain all the software I need to develop for the zaurus?

It contains headers and binaries for you to test on your desktop, and then link for the Sharp device.

3) If I want to develop using SDL libraries for the Zaurus, what should i do?
4) Is there a way to test my software on my computer before copying it to the zaurus?

Yes, you just run the Qvfb (Qt Virtual Frame Buffer) application, and run your app with the -qws argument.

You can install applications from sd/cf card, using the software packages (Add Remove) program.

You can also flash a newer community based rom image such as openzaurus, or even the Qtopia based romimage from Trolltech at qtopia.net.

Security and Networking / My Wifi Days Over?

If this brand of WIFI card is so fragile and un-reliable, what is the best alternative?
I don't have a WIFI card yet, but if I buy one, I surly want it to be reliable.
Which brand makes the most durable WIFI card? And that is compatable with most Zaurus?
Since these things cannot be purchased at a local store, and would have to be mailed back if defective, I'm hoping there is one that doesn't break so easily.

we have several netgear ma701's here at work, that are still working fine after about 4 years use.

Might not be able to find these anymore, though.

Archos forum / Pma400 Sdk And Qtopia 1.7 Sdk Compiling Error

you might want to try pulling the libqte and libqpe and friends off the Archos,  and putting them in /opt/Qtopia/arm/lib, replacing the ones that are there.
