Essential Z Software Megapost!
« on: January 13, 2005, 12:12:26 pm »
Hey guys.
I'd like to compile a list of very good (mature) software for the Z so that newbies don't get overwhelmed by the avalanche of apps available on it.
If you have very good apps you think no one should miss, reply here with name, link, and whatever info you think is necessary.
I'll update with mine in a few.
Please do NOT post questions/comments so this thread stays on-course, and easy to read

My personal list:

KDEP Pimpi Zautrix is our savior! Send him bug reports here
Opie Reader cool text reader.
Joe's Own Editor. Just a nice CLI text editor.
QPE Filemanager Just a little less braindead than the Files tab.
Qpdf2 Get the freetype package.

APPS
NEOCAL
Provides a very good calculator for the Z, much better than the one built in. Free version very usable.
http://www.hudren.com/products/neocal/

INTERNET TOOLS
GAIM FOR QTOPIA
MSN messenger, Jabber, and AIM support. (A bit finicky in the install. Feh.)
http://qpe-gaim.sourceforge.net/

QAZOO
Yahoo Instant Messenger support.
http://qazoo.sourceforge.net/

Software I can't immediately find homepages for that I find useful:
NeIC - IRC client for the Zaurus
EmbeddedKonsole - For Unix programming, much better than the old Terminal.
OpieFTP - Basic FTP client

NETWORK SECURITY TOOLS
http://www.irongeek.com/all.php
For geeks only. Summary of Wellenreiter, Kismet, ZEthereal, etc.

GAMES
There are some interesting games out there, yes. But occasionally one finds the need to waste small amounts of time playing ZSolitaire.

For the enlightened "mobile developer" :

A complete Python 2.3 (2.4 forthcoming) environment, plus PyQt for GUIs and SQLite3 bindings, in one neat package by Kopsis.

Installs easily as one large image file to a (FAT) CF or SD card, seen as a read/write ext2 filesystem thanks to some Linux magic.

The 2.4 version will also be available as a 'cramfs' image, about 5 times smaller, but read-only.

http://pyqplayer.sourceforge.net/cgi-bin/b...qPlayerDownload

EDIT:
For coding directly on the Z, you can use ZEditor (already mentioned in this thread) just like with any text file, or the more specialized VisiScript. It is based on the well-known Scintilla engine (Qt version) and supports colored syntax for several languages (python perl ruby tcl etc.) as well as other niceties usually found in IDEs:
http://www.mneuroth.de/privat/zaurus/visiscript.html

EDIT2:
The new python 2.4 images by Kopsis are available:

A touch of the exotic, from Switzerland : ELOG

Not as well know as their cheese, chocolate, gold bars, Victorinox knives and luxury watches, but nice and useful too, and free :-)

Read up on ELOG here : http://midas.psi.ch/elog/

It's a versatile, 'batteries-included' weblog app (no separate web server or database needed) that can be turned into almost anything (blog, forum, note-taking, database etc.). Very simple to configure. Can replicate or synchronize between ELOG servers, & much more.

To try it out: grab the tar.gz archive on the site above (no IPK yet, sorry) and follow the Linux install instructions except for the "make" part.

Then get the ready-made binaries for the Z here :
http://fredp.lautre.net/Z/

Copy them to the 'bin' directory under your ELOG installation and off you go...

I don't do much with my Zaurus, but I do use the Spoken program that converts text to speech.  It is a java program that incorporates the flite speech processer and requires jeode.  I have used it with my 5500 and 6000L.  This has read me the news while I am jogging and walking to work for over a year now.  For the money ($13 US) It is the best thing I have bought for my zauri.

Klaatu, Barada, nuuuuu.   necktie? nocturne? neptune?     Definitly an N word . . . .

Targus IR keyboard, Archos AV 340 w camcorder
SL-5500 cacko 0/64 rom, and a bunch of stuff I haven't
touched since I got the 6k

Stuff I use frequently:

QPDF2
NeoCal
Keyring
QPSword
Zbedic
ZUC
Drawpad
MooView (Fastest JPEG viewer I have found for large pictures)

I'd also like to point out that the Embedded Linux Software Index has a voting system, which would be a good way of ranking people's favourites in a more organised fashion.

There's a demo available for download. I didn't like it myself. But to each his own I guess.
