Author Topic: Where To Get 6000? (Read 11002 times)

I've been reading through the other threads (including the one about the jpettins scam), but ebay seems to have dried up (1 unit- in america, over the past 2 weeks) and amazon is still out of stock.

I saw a 6000 go for 190 pounds on ebay before christmas- i am kicking myself for not snapping it up, but then i was torn between the 6000 and the 860 (still am, but leaning towards 6000 now). It's the only one I have ever seen available in the uk- which really sucks.

I know there where loads before christmas- where have they all gone?
Is sharp still making them?
Where did the pile of them come from? Did some company dump a load of them or something?
Where can I get one in the uk? I know we're getting $1.89 to the pound, but I still can't afford to pay many of the prices I have seen. 250 pounds is my limit really, including delivery (so I doubt I'll ever get one).
How much can I expect to pay for shipping from US to UK?

This has been a big question for many as of the past few weeks. The status of these is few and far between at the moment. Since Sharp doesn't sell these in the U.S anymore the only ones that are left are the ones that someone has kept in stock. I currently am sold out of these as well and finding them even in Japan at the moment is getting tough. Prices as of lately here in the U.S is around $575 and going up if you can find them. Once we are forced to import these from Japan I would say you can expect prices to be over 700 each with 700 being the cheapest. I am trying to find out more on these units but all Ic an say is if you can find them buy them because they are becoming hard to find and expensive to get.

sharpusa was marketing (hah!) them for the enterprise solutions, but let amazon sell them retail. sharpusa has now pulled out of the zaurus market completely and before christmas was its clearance sale. Possibly sharp japan is still making and selling them, but they are for the enterprise market only and it is a little harder to find retail. The good news is there is a bluetooth/wifi version in japan, but the bad news is it is expensive. At least one member here has the bluetooth/wifi version.

I'm never going to get one now

They were expensive enough as it was, now they're going up and im gonna have to pay shipping from US to UK.

This sucks.

Reconsider and get the C860. It's really one of the best PDAs out there. With Cacko and pdaXrom, there's just no comparison.

Arrgh- I just saw a photo of the c860 screen and now I have no idea which one I want now.
But then, the 860 has the same screen as the 6000 (or is the 6000 one even better). The annoying thing is that the 6000 is the only one capable of 2 cf slots. But it has built in wifi and usb so i probably won't need either of them. The usb really is a major feature I am looking for. Out of interest does anyone know of any other palmtops/pmts/pdas/whatever with usb?
The cheapest usb host cf card i have seen so far will be at least 80 pounds.

Great- to make things worse, there's a c860 for sale on UK ebay- currently for 255 pounds.
How much is it worth really?

Hmm... two 6000's have appeared in america. How I would pay for one I don't know.

The 6000 does have the better screen. It is a 4" screen as opposed to the clamshell's 3.7" screen. The 6000's screen is also transflective (reflective enough to be more viewable with direct sunlight) while the clamshells are transmissive (Not as good in sunlight). The sl-c3000 is the only other zaurus with usb host natively, but the others can make use of a usb host cf card (RATOC?)

BTW the extra cf slot you spoke of is part of an expansion sleeve which is now harder to find because amazon has sold out their stock.

Yes, the Z6K rocks from a high! Not to mention that the USB connectivity allows me to (right now) type on an external USB keyboard (the IR pocketop seemes to need some "special" little angle), and swap it later with my 2.5" 40GB external hard disk drive. Nothing rocks supremo like this!

Well, of course, it costs me a chunk of my paycheque to get it shipped from Missouri to Singapore (plus additional 50bucks for taxes!!). But is it worth it??

the answer: TOTALLY, down to every single cent!!! There's no where near any current linux-based PDA that can afford me do all kinds of magic with this baby, especially if you're into infosec!

What about the 3000? The price premium is coming down. Now, if only Sharp had updated the display to be a 4" like the 6000.

Then one day when a bigger microdrive is available, e.g. a 20gb, upgrading the 3000 will result in an awesome pocket computer whose parameters I am not worthy to calculate.

The Toshiba e740 and e750 have built-in USB host, but require an adapter (which includes VGA out) or a cable (which just brings out the USB pins from the proprietary connector. Purchasing one or the other will cost US$20-100, depending on how lucky you get.

The bad news is that the Linux port is still in the early stages.

I believe that one or more of the most recent iPaqs also have USB host support, but haven't looked into it.

if someone is porting linux to the genio i have a spare one. it has a usb host port on the docking cradle so it may have host usb capabilities. does anyone have anymore info on porting linux to the genio. i am willing to be a test subject.

Looking for a Z. Is the price difference between the 6000 and the 5600 worth it? Still leaning towards a 5600 for in the 200-300 range. Not sure if another 200 to 300 dollars for the 6000 is worth it. Any input?

Personally, I'd recommend getting the 5500. It's a great little machine, far more software support available for it then the 5600, (I understand OpenZaurus is very buggy on it) Additionally, you'd be paying anywhere from $50 to $170 extra for merely a bigger batter and a faster processor, and even then you may get a defective one, meaning you'll have to fiddle with a workaround and bring in instability. For me at least, it's no question which one I prefer. If you already know Linux, then it's up to you. If you're relatively new, then get the cheap one, to get a feel for the Zaurus. That makes the price difference more in the $350 to $520 range, which may influence your decision more. My $0.02.

The 5500/5600 and the 6000 just dont compare against each other.

The 6000 is a different beast altogether.
First-off - the 6000 VGA screen is vastly better than the non-vga screen of the 5xxx series - it is even better than the VGA screen of the C860.

Secondly the processors on the two are different - not vastly different, but noticibly faster I believe.

What makes everybody drool over the 6000 is the Screen and the USB host feature. That makes a big differentce for people who want more memory (such as external HDD, or USB sticks) to work with the zaurus.

But of course the single big factor is the screen - after using the VGA screens (640x480) you wont want to go back to the older screens of the 5xxx series.
The negetive is that there are fewer ROM's (only 2 that I know) for the 6000 at this moment.

Yeah, the usb host capabilities is huge. There are however usb host flash cards out there that work, right? It seems the C750 is about the same price as the 6000 depending on where you look. I have looked into a 5500 however the faster processor and available memory is the big reason I would go with the 5600. The screen is a huge improvement and a major reason I would pay more, still undecided. :/
