My Wifi Days Over?
« on: June 07, 2006, 05:03:35 am »
Hi All,

I am experiencing the "signal is low" issue with my dlink dcf 660, after seconds of getting online right next to my access point. Searching the forums suggests this is due to a bug in qtopia/sharp, and that there's not a lot I can do about it. I haven't been able to find the original reference to this- ie where can I find out more about this bug?

So are my wireless days over? Does this happen to all users of cacko or sharp based roms? Is it related to particular cards?

If I move over to pdaxrom am I going to be able to use wifi again?

Thanks

Jo

I've had a similar problem with this card. However, it seemed to me like a hardware failure.
I sent it back to the dealer for exchange / repair.
I bought another card for the meantime (Ovislink) which worked very well.
When I got back the (or another) Dlink card that one worked well, too.

So I think it was NOT a software issue, although I cannot say for sure.

Ah, well that's interesting, and something I hadn't considered. I will contact dlink and see what they have to say about it.

Thanks!

ya, i also had one of those crappy cards, and it slowly failed like that. Try bending it a bit.

Cheers,

It wasn't exactly a slow failure- more like not working out of the box. I did have more luck getting a connection when I put pressure on the bottom edge of the card, but I had only had it for a few weeks and dlink were happy for me to return it. Now just waiting for a new one...

If this brand of WIFI card is so fragile and un-reliable, what is the best alternative?
I don't have a WIFI card yet, but if I buy one, I surly want it to be reliable.
Which brand makes the most durable WIFI card? And that is compatable with most Zaurus?
Since these things cannot be purchased at a local store, and would have to be mailed back if defective, I'm hoping there is one that doesn't break so easily.

I recommend the Symbol Spectrum24 (aka Socket Low Power WiFi Rev. A).  The card works well and appears to be solidly constructed.  As an added bonus the card has a small footprint in the Zaurus and is low powered.  The card is also plug and play in Cacko and gets a better signal then my Powerbook.
I think I'm coming down with what kahm's got!  I now have 3 Zaurii in house!  ;)

I also have one of these crappy D-Link cards. It worked for about 6 months, now it works for a minute or two
before loosing connection or dying causing the screen to go totally white. I have to remove the battery to make it go away.

we have several netgear ma701's here at work, that are still working fine after about 4 years use.

Might not be able to find these anymore, though.

yeah, the netgear works nicely, but the plastic parts are a bit fragile. mine are broken and the plastic is just hanging on to the card, but it is still working flawlessly. the electronics of the card is good, just the external encasing is crap.

My D-Link lasted a week.

I tried to use it at my college, and it died, and took the School's wifi network with it. :/

It's not been repaired, a year later. Oops?

I use an Adtec Adlink Broadcat 345CF

The extra advantage of it being that it's a full CF type 2 card, and is thus by default a little sturdier than the usual CF type 1 junk.

Been going 4 weeks with not a single problem. ^^

the ma701 actually can fail just as easily.  I've had two netgear cards fail the same way those dlink ones did (I had to bend them to keep them working) and I've read of others having the same fate.  My spectrum/socket card so far has been very reliable.
