This is my ultra portable home webserver.  The first stable X rom will make it perfect to interface it with my 4 *nix boxes.
I'm now an iphone user and use my zaurii as serial terminals, perl and shell scripting and when I need 640x480 screens

I too have a 6000L now... (yippee!).  I'm using it mostly as a pda to sync with my outlook stuff at work, since I have pdaxrom on my 760 and it's not as easy to sync.  I love the built-in wifi...

Even though this is my third Z, I didn't realize ORG that you now have all three basic roms (sharp, OZ and pdaxrom).  Nice.

Got my 6KL about a month or so ago from Amazon. I had a 5600 for a month before it accidently fell into a bucket of water...don't ask.

For those waiting on the fence because of Sharp's pullout, my advice is to examine yourself and if you fall into the geek "I gotta be different" category just get one. Up to the time I received my new one I was fighting with my Palm IIIx on almost a daily basis and figured if I could keep the 6KL half as long then it would be a good investment.

My historical rout to the Zaurus was through Amiga, who at one time was going to develop on it, and a sneek peek at one of the earlier versions at a Comdex many years ago.

My biggest problem is that I have very little knowledge of networking and Linux, having concentrated on other computing areas for the past few years. This is a handicap that will have to be overcome. Judging from what little I've read in this forum, this will be the place to start.

I'd love to run Rebol on my Zaurus. Anybody out there succeed in this area?

Got my SK-6000 a month ago from Amazon. I was just pittying myself why didn't I get 5600 while the price was really low and SL6000 was way too high. In 3 weeks time SL6000 went donw to $500 then to $370 and I immediatelly got mine

My major problem with SL6K is that I can't get a good carrying case and I won't take it with me without some kind of protection. So it sits next to my monitor on my desktop. Any recommendations for a leather/nylon case ? How do you carry your SL6K wth you?

Hi all,

Got mine two weeks ago and I can't believe how awesome this thing is.  It's so much more than the SL-5500 I had before.  I'm from Canada so took advantage of a long business trip to have it shipped to the US office.

So far my only peeves are finding a version of Keypebble VNC to download and finding a USB cable for on-the-road syncing.

As far as a case, I'm going to find one of those zippered binder style portfolios.  Let's face it, you always need a pad of paper with you.  I've seem some from Franklin Covey that now have a "Universal PDA holder".  No, you don't need velcro, and it looks like you could extend the keyboard while the PDA is clipped.  Will report back.

Regards,
Doug

Hi all,

I just got my Z a month ago on Amazon for $380. It's my first PDA, I bought it to force me to learn about Linux. I was hesitating between the Z and a new linux scientfic PDA about to be released by a new company, please see      http://www.hpcalc.org/qonos.php . Everything is new for me, for example I had some problems installing packages because my folder's name contained a blank. By reading this forum, I am amazed by what it can be done.
I bought some extras : Thinkoutside IR Keyboard, Javo 2.5mm headphones, Microdrive Hitachi 4Gb(there is a $50 mailin rebate available till december 31st ), iRiver usb cable, NiteIze Clip Case.

People here in this forum are very helpful, thanks a lot everybody.
Mery Christmas...
SL-C1000 from PriceJapan(cheap and very fast shipping) with EA-70 power adapter, iRiver USB Host cable, PDAIR case, pentopia stylus, ultra clear screen-protector from shop.brando.com.hk only $3 for shipping worldwide
4GB Hitachi Microdrive, 1GB Kingston Elite Pro CF, 4GB Transcend 150x SD, Symbol Spectrum 4137 CF WiFi(low power)
PdaXrom pdaxii13 5.4.9 updated with Kkazakov13's feed. I owned a SL-6000L before

I bought the SL-6000L for $380 on Amazon in early December, but I only recently picked it up because I had to fly home to the US to do so. A trustworthy friend of mine had recommended the Z to me when I mentioned that I was toying with the idea of buying a PDA -- that is, trying to invent enough reasons to justify it. My criteria were extremely specific and didn't help matters. I was looking for a sub-$400 model with a hideaway thumb keypad, lots of RAM, built-in WiFi, extensability, and with a dedicated community of developers and users. As a Mac user (switched in 2001 and now rabidly pro-Apple), the latter was especially important to me.

After unpacking and working with it for a little over a week, I must confess to being utterly wowed by the hardware but mildly disappointed by the software, above all the lack of a good sync utility. Handcom Word and Sheet are great, and so are QTmail and Opera (I've actually since installed the IBM multimodal version with Opera 7.55); but what I really need (okay, want) is a portable device that will handle all my contacts, e-mail, grocery shopping and book/CD/DVD lists, calendar entries and to-do's, and an MP3/AAC player -- a mini-Mac, in other words, something I can sync and take on holiday so I can listen to digital music and write, say, a book review and submit it from a hotspot on the road.

I went with the Z instead of a Palm primarily because I wanted to learn about Linux firsthand. I can't stomach the gadget-happy trendies who don't understand the technology they're blindly embracing, and I love the idea of open-source development. But I'm not a power user, and, as far and I can tell from what has been debated in these very forums, there appears to be a lot of OS choice -- fragmentation, you might call it -- but not a heck of a lot of useful, stable, feature-rich, updated software that works without serious command-line tweaking. GAIM, for example, hasn't been updated in almost a year, even though the website promises a v.5 "soon". This is one app I looked forward to installing, but I spent several frustrating hours trying to find a workaround before giving up. Same with the less-than-stellar (when it does work at all) ZMacSync. Even the trouble between Z models is discouraging, such as when newly released software -- Cacko 1.22 comes to mind -- runs on older or Japan-only Zs but not newer ones like the 6000.

Don't get me wrong. I have no regrets at all and no intention of parting with my 6000L anytime soon, but if I'm to be completely honest, I haven't collapsed on the floor due to unbridled hysterical elation over my Z. Maybe I was too much of a geek romantic to imagine such a thing was possible at all.

The lingering optimist in me does, however, see good things on the horizon with Qtopia 2.1 and (later still) 4, and maybe the forthcoming Palm Linux-based distro if it runs on the Z. Based on personal experience, I came to the Mac during the uncomfortable transition from OS 9 to OS X, back when X apps were in scarce supply and Mac/Win compatibility was still a niggling issue, and now I'm collapsed-on-the-floor-elated that I did.

If I'm missing anything here, please correct me. The Z, its history, its support base and the terminology are still very new, so I may easily have things mixed up or overlooked something obvious. But this, for better or worse, has been my first impression of the 6000.

I bought one on ebay (thought I bought one on amazon too.. but there is abig thread on that). I pretty well prefer openzaurus. with occasional flights to sharprom just to see what there is to see...

James Nak.. nice to hear the amiga mentioned in this context!!!!  uae exists for the zaurus..though I don't know anyone running it on a 6k. wasn't there also a amiga-on-jave thing going?

Tonight, tonight, it's coming tonight.  Hot damn, tonight!

I'm really looking forward to my new toy....er....productivity tool.  I will love it, and feed it, and name it Ruprecht.

Seriously though, I'm hoping this will be more useful to me than my previous two clies or palm devices, or windows ce devices.  I am optimistic though.  I don't run any windows systems (haven't for the past 4 years) and have been able to accomplish everything with linux.  I'm certain that I will have a good experience with the Z

I bought this sl-6000l on ebay, new in box.  With shipping, $460.  If it shows up today, I'll be heading to Frys tonight to pick up a big SD card and maybe a CF ethernet.....and a couple of DVD's......and maybe some headphones.......I love Frys

I picked mine up at the end of October when they where going on fire sale at Amazon for $380.  So far, I've just been enjoying surfing from bed

I am about to start trying some of the ROMs - the X/QT on Debian sounds enticing, but I'll probably start with OZ to see what it's like.

I was a long time Newton owner (and developer), and the Z does not disappoint -- it's much smaller in size and the screen is great.  I'm not sure a Cx60 would have been useful for me (i.e. keyboard), as mostly I'm just surfing and checking mail via imap.

I'm thrilled with the cf and sd options though - and really like the ability to view my Canon Powershot photos on the big 4" 6000 screen

I have had mine for about 2 weeks. Love it!

I never thought I would ever own a PDA, but this one
seemed to have everything I need.

I am looking forward to trying different linux versions on this device.

Everything seems to work fine, except that I can't seem to get
the 56k modem CF card to work! This seems a bit strange since
it is probably the simplest device there. Hopefully, someone in
this group can help me out.

I carry my 6k in a soft zippered nylon case that came with an HP 48G.  It fits pretty nice.  Room for a couple of cards and a little bit of extra room on the end (the 48G is slightly longer and thicker than the 6k).  I wouldn't feel comfortable dropping it in this case, but even a perfect fitting leather case wouldn't relieve me of dropping anxiety.

Howdy, new Zaurus SL-6000L owner here.  Saw one available on eBay, used, for $399 and jumped on it.

I'd been looking at PDAs for a long time.  I got a crappy Casio PDA a long time ago, and it was so horribly slow I never really got into using it.  After reading the reviews of the 6000 for a while, I was very excited about the possibilities.

- VGA screen
- USB host
- Unix
- Java

I've been using different flavors of *nix for going on 15 years now, so I feel comfortable in my ability to put together a compile environment with help from the community, so I can cross-compile apps for it.

I wanted something I could carry around the house with me, for basic messaging and alerts.  (I work from home; basic server monitoring over a web page is all I really need in that department.) And something that would be useful when travelling for business.  I visit Germany a few times a year; English -> German translation would be a bonus, as well as maps and wireless internet connectivity at internet cafes and such, without having to carry a laptop.  Also, the USB host capability intrigues me, and I'd like to use the Zaurus in the car on road trips and such in combination with a GPS.  (I have a USB Earthmate, I'm hoping to be able to use it, although I WILL get another if I have to.)

I have a Blackberry I can use for work related emails, so that's not terribly important.

Here's to a long and healthy friendship with my 6000, and the folks in these forums!

I've been the proud and mostly happy owner of a 6000L for five days now.  After using a dos-based HP palmtop for more then ten years, I thought it was time for an upgrade.  The 6K is actually slightly smaller and lighter than the HP, so I do not find it too large to carry in a shirt pocket.  I wrap a couple of large rubber bands around it to prevent it sliding out of the pocket.

As a Linux neophyte, I feel like I'm trying to leap onto a spinning carousel.    I hope I'll learn my way around the system in time; for now, the 6K is very usable at a superficial level.

Thanks to all who contribute helpful information to these forums!
