Cosmo Communicator - Hardware / 4G Antenna Location
« on: September 17, 2020, 01:49:39 am »
Hi,

Can somebody please confirm exactly where the 4G antennas are located on the Cosmo?

I know they are at the ends of the device, but are they under the keyboard or behind the main screen glass (in the lid)?

Thanks,

Alastair

Cosmo Communicator - General Discussion / Re: Camera

Google Photos allows you to view the raw DNG files. However, when I download them or even transfer directly from my phone over USB to my Windows 10 machine, the resolution of the DNG files appears to change.

In Google Photos, JPG resolution is 2816 x 2108, DNG resolution is 2800 x 2092.

In Windows 10, Explorer reports the JPG resolution to be the same, but the DNG resolution is now 940 x 702!

If I upload the DNG on my Windows PC to Google Photos, the resolution is back at 2800 x 2092.

What Windows package allows you to view DNG files at the native resolution? I tried IrfanView and the built-in Windows 10 photo viewer and they all downsize the photos.

Cosmo Communicator - Android / Re: V23 update available.
« on: August 05, 2020, 10:33:05 pm »
Only two problems I have noted with V23 firmware:

1) The fingerprint sensor doesn't allow me to unlock my Cosmo with the screen closed. I have to type in my PIN on the CODI instead. it is as if the sensor has gone to sleep, as there is no response. If the screen is open, the unlock with fingerprint works every time.

2) With my screen open, if I type the wrong PIN on the physical keyboard, then the keyboard won't register any presses and I am forced to use the on-screen keypad instead.

Anybody else got these issues?

Cosmo Communicator - Android / V19 Firmware Battery Life
« on: May 30, 2020, 03:54:09 am »
So I have finally given up on my Cosmo. Broken CODI and pathetic battery life. Went back to my Gemini and had forgotten how good the battery life was. 10 hours on with WiFi and mobile data enabled, yet still over 70% battery left! Waiting for Planet to advise returns procedure to get my Cosmo fixed.

Well battery started behaving itself, but now my CODI is broken. Looks like a hairline crack has appeared under the glass. It never got mistreated, so no reason for it to break. I recall other people having the same issue?

I'm turning CODI off to see if that is the problem now. There are no obvious applications hogging the CPU time.

Cosmo Communicator - Android / V19 Firmware Battery Life

I have resisted updating my Android firmware and am still on V19.

Up until a few days ago, I always got a day's battery life - even with CODI enabled.

Now if I leave it unplugged sitting there doing nothing (WiFi on as normal), I can pick up my phone and it isn't responding. Turns out the battery has drained and it has turned itself off. I estimate it is losing 25% charge in a little over 2 hours.

I haven't changed anything with the setup on the phone - nor have I installed any new apps.

Any ideas or is this just another Planet quality & reliability issue?

Cosmo Communicator - Hardware / USB-C
« on: February 16, 2020, 09:04:03 pm »
I picked up an HP Travel Dock on eBay:

https://support.hp.com/au-en/product/hp-usb...74/product-info

This works in both Cosmo USB-C ports and provides HDMI or VGA (not at the same time), plus 2 x USB3 ports, which support USB drives and keyboard/mouse.

The Ethernet port does not work under Android, but I'm not really bothered about that.

So I can keep my fast charger connected in the left hand port and then the HP Travel Dock in the right hand port!

Well, it DID work on the Gemini, although you couldn't charge through the hub, so if it is a hardware change, or on the software side, I haven't got any idea. But hope it is software related, as that could still be corrected...

But it sounds strange that it would even get through the prototype stage with that kind of problems. Should really be something that should be tested, that both USB ports works at the same time, and the same with charging and use of USB port!!?!

I have been doing some tests with my Cosmo re USB-C connectivity.

I have a Verbatim USB-C travel mouse that worked just fine with the Gemini, although I only use it in the right USB-C port (never tested in left port, as I am right-handed). I tried it on the Cosmo and it didn't work in either port! I then restarted the Cosmo and it works in both ports.

I recently bought a NexDock 2 via Kickstarter. It is really hit and miss if the Cosmo recognises it using the official Planet HDMI adaptor.

The only way I can get the Cosmo to see the NexDock's keyboard and touchpad is to connect it via the Planet USB-C dock. The final result is a bit messy, as I also need to plug in two cables to the Planet dock.

It would be really nice if I only had to plug in one USB-C cable to get video, keyboard and trackpad working, but that is currently only supported with Samsung and Huawei devices (Pixel coming soon).

I haven't got my Cosmo yet, but KISS launcher runs really well on the Gemini and I intend to install it on my Cosmo.

Gemini PDA - Android / Recording voice memos

I'd like to record voice memos 'on the go' without having to open the Gemini each time. A great way to do this would be to press the silver button on the right side of the Gemini (I don't use Google Assistant, so that can be disabled) to start recording, and then press again to stop, with an audible sound to indicate recording, and another on the second press when recording ends.

Anyone remember the recording buttons on the side of the Series 5?

I'm guessing this would require some custom app development to implement, but if there's away to achieve this using existing apps I'd be interested to know.

I recently picked up a Sony SWR30 watch, which includes a voice record feature when paired with an Android phone. It only cost $60 and has an e-Ink screen and speakerphone capability. Works perfectly with the Gemini, because you can do so much with it without having to open the Gemini, e.g. see who is calling, answer/reject/make calls, stopwatch, countdown timer, view Android notifications and respond to them.

Also just found Leena OS on Google Play. Might give this a try, although it doesn't appear to have been updated in a while.....

Leena OS is a definite no BTW - only supports particular apps. I deleted it after a few minutes of playing with it.
