I'm disappointed and feel that I've been put in a difficult position by Planet, with no way to support the community. I've had personal attacks, and it's not a good position to be in. I have to tread carefully due to NDAs, and balance technical development with reasonable caution, which has led to some accusations that I have 'held back development', when it's more a matter of caution and making sure we tread carefully.
I feel your pain. I suppose many, probably Planet included, were put in difficult positions, one way or another, when their factory, inventory and more got taken. Still, their so typical silence reasonably cannot be helping anyone.

Yes, it's not acceptable to go completely silent like this, though. I know there's all this AI stuff, but it feels like all the small, good phone vendors are doing this. Blockchain and such. Makes you wonder *why*.

Heh, I'd be interested in the Gemini. How's it doing - intact and working, display-wise? And where did you get the Planet t-shirt from? I never got one from Planet. Should've. I'm in the UK, though, not sure how dear shipping is from Sweden...
My Gemini is fine for its age, if in need of some cleaning. Though I put it away half-charged, it was completely flat when I took it out of storage yesterday. After some hesitation it charged and seems to run fine. While it likely wouldn't run for very long on battery, nothing is damaged or missing. I tried attaching some hastily snapped pictures, but got an error message saying the attachments directory isn't writeable, so I'll have to try and describe things instead.

My Gemini has the camera attachment (I still also have the original cover panel without a camera cutout), a Swe/Fin keyboard and my power bricks are for the EU. Besides the device itself, I have the original box, the cover removal tool, the Planet-branded leather sleeve, the full printed manual (in, I'd say, near-mint condition), some paperworks (including the sticker sheet) and one of those Planet-branded USB/Ethernet hubs. I also have an unused car mount kit, my Cosmo, its box, the box for my Astro and the original keyboard rubber mat for my Gemini (which didn't quite work, so I was sent a replacement).

Beyond the above, I have one of those HDMI adaptor cables, which was golden when I tried to fix my Astro myself. I'd have to hold on to that, just in case my Astro would ever find its way home and I'd somehow be able to reflash it with anything useful. As the device was when I sent it to Planet, that cable was really the only way for me to see anything (I think I managed to hook up ADB over WiFi or something weird like that, but I couldn't do anything useful with it). I'd also have to hold on to a power brick or two, but I guess EU power bricks wouldn't be that useful to you anyway?

Ideally, I'd like to send all the stuff I don't need in one packet to one place, but if you're interested in specifically the Gemini and maybe some accessories, tell me what you'd want and we'll work something out. I have no clue about shipping costs. For you it would be free anyway.

The T-shirt was crowdfunded, I think, and has some concept art for the Gemini printed on it. While I am not really a T-shirt person, back then, I tried, within reason, to get one each of the things Planet crowdfunded, which is how I ended up with a car mount kit despite not using a car. Some logistics hiccup led to me eventually receiving two, neither of which they wanted back. I managed to donate one to someone in Denmark (I think) a few years ago. The remaining kit has been lightly tested but not really used.

Yes. let's discuss over WhatsApp - I DM'd you my number. I need to get my PO box address out of the documents.

There's also someone on the Discord server interested in a Cosmo.

I can chase up contacts at Planet for you if you DM me, and see what I can do. You should have the Astro back by now at least!
Yes, please. I'll DM the serial number, my backer Id, my current address and whatever I think might be useful. I'm not really sure why I want a most likely not fixed and, by now, mostly outdated device back, but I do. If Planet are broke nowadays, I can pay for return shipping, provided they still have some reasonably smooth way of receiving money from an individual abroad.

DM'd you about this.

To, if possible, preserve context, I'm trying here first. So, in the hope that someone still reads this old stuff: Greetings!

First, since someone seemingly still pays to keep their web sites up, their support email still issues tickets (that nobody replies to) and their shop, though stale, still offers things, is Planet Computers meaningfully active? Do they take orders? Do they ship? Has anyone heard from them? Are there any vital signs? Early last year Dom (shymega) was working on negotiating employment with them. Did anything ever come out of that?

I tried, but haven't heard from Janko since March 2023. I occasionally hear from two other Planet employees, but unfortunately no dice. I now work for an open-source consultancy remotely (I'm actually up north for a office visit as I write this).

Second, as some may recall, about two years ago, I sent my Astro to Planet, as a deficient update had disabled its screen. After giving them every benefit of doubt, the present reality is that instead of returning it, fixed or not, they ghosted me and essentially stole my Astro.

Unfortunately, it seems they have changed focus, and I'm not even sure what the heck they're up to. I can chase up contacts at Planet for you if you DM me, and see what I can do. You should have the Astro back by now at least!

My Astro is also broken with attestation keys, so I can't even pay with it. It's basically a paperweight now. Development device at best.

Last, as I recently relieved my still working Cosmo of its last important duty, I am contemplating to backup the thing, factory reset it and try to donate it to someone interested, preferably in Sweden, together with my remaining Planet paraphernalia, including an old Gemini, an unused car mount kit, an unworn Planet T-shirt and some other accessories. While I haven't quite made up my mind yet, would there be any takers of the lot here?

Heh, I'd be interested in the Gemini. How's it doing - intact and working, display-wise? And where did you get the Planet t-shirt from? I never got one from Planet. Should've. I'm in the UK, though, not sure how dear shipping is from Sweden...

Astro Slide - Android / Re: Astro update to V07
« on: June 26, 2025, 05:35:25 pm »
Is there anything I can do to help bring a newer version of Android to the Astro Slide?

No. There are several factors necessary, not least of which that we - the community - need Google to sign the builds, be an official Google partner, and the signing keys for the Astro. None of which we have.

https://github.com/planet-community for OSS'd repos.

However, I doubt the Astro will ever be updated. Whilst unsigned OSes (or test keys signed) could be used, it wouldn't be fully functional or supported on the Play Store. Therefore, a lot of apps would refuse to run.

Is the source code available?

No, it's NDA'd, if you're referring to the BSP. Bootloader was taken down by Mediatek on GitHub.

There's a few projects mainlining the kernel and such, but AFAIK, I'm the only [active] one here with access.

I tried Wi-Fi (at home): didn't work. Then I tried mobile data: worked (just checking for an update). Then I tried Wi-Fi (at home) again: didn't work. Then I tried mobile data: worked.

Strange. It works fine on WiFi at home for me and on mobile data - although I don't use the Astro much now.

I would recommend attempting to check on say, a public library's WiFi offering or a local cafe.

Do you have the V07b update? I'm wondering if this is possibly a parental control, or an ISP-mandated block.

That is a prototype. It is not ready for production, and has not recently been worked on.

Gemian is no longer maintained.

Droidian/postmarketOS would be the next best option, but they have not progressed very far.

I have noted some folks have managed to update from Debian's official mirrors.

Astro Slide - Android / Re: Rooting the Astro Slide
« on: January 30, 2025, 04:10:32 pm »
As written above, I was able to be rooted Astro Slide on v07 without any problems, but when I carried out exactly the same procedure on the v07b, it fell into a boot loop. I cannot even power off.
I left it until the battery ran out and investigated with MTK client, the following rooted image for v07b seems to be incorrect. (Stock image is no problem.)
https://github.com/planet-community/planet-devices/wiki/Astro-rooting#rooting-methods

Writing with either FASTBOOT or MTK client,  it fell into a boot loop in the same way. MD5 matches have also confirmed.

When I used a boot image patched with Magisk v26.4 from the v07b Stock image, I was able to be rooted successfully.
For reference, I put it here.

MD5 3ea412192887d4b320d6a1f9770c903d

Supplementary information.
After the battery ran out, I connected the power supply while holding down the volume reduction button, and it booted in FASTBOOT mode.
This procedure was new knew to me.
Even without MTK client, the boot image can be replaced again.

Please report a bug on the repo. You haven't said which rooted image you used, but if it's from my script, there is a issue with boot oops, which can be fixed with adb.

As for the rooted images based off the Magisk app, we have had no reports of failure on those, which is the same procedure as you replicated on your Astro.

Found this https://github.com/shymega/cosmo-v25-android-fw-ota

So far so good!

Hi,
GitHub comes w/ a 404 error. Do you happen to keep a copy of the v25 for sharing?
Thanks

Try now, for some reason, the repository was marked private.

It's best to update on your own Cosmo, rather than using dd'd images.

Mobile data shouldn't - in theory - affect it. There was an outage recently, but no official word from Planet. It was reported on the `shymega/planet-devices` GitHub repo, and I wasn't aware until then.

Are you using corporate WiFi - or is this personally managed?

11
This news saddens me. Whilst I cannot get the order expedited, the fact there's been no communication is deeply concerning.

Can you DM me your last name and first initial?

Planet is still alive, but I think they've run out of hands.

Thanks.

12
I am mistaken. It has been a while since I've looked at my Astro, and I can confirm the HDMI cable works with Astro. I saw a thread on this forum.

But what I will reiterate is that Alt DP/DP out isn't supported by any Planet mobile device.

13
The Astro Slide does not have an official HDMI cable.

Alt DP?DP out is not supported by any Planet device.

It only has HDMI through a special decoding chip.

Try asking around on the Discord servers.

Astro Slide - Android / Re: Building LineageOS for Astro feasible?

There's a device tree I got hold of on the Planet Community GitHub organisation. Advice is really to focus efforts on that organisation, where I'm working on funding via Open Collective, and from Planet.

I have addressed the issues in the README. I suspect people are downloading HTML as a 'zip'.
