Angstrom & OpenZaurus / Faults Or Features?

_Originally_, Opie was forked from Qtopia 1.4
Opie has a few patches from both qtopia 1.5, and 1.7, and 2.1

You can't really say it is derived from 1.4
[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=81662\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]

Yeah, but it's also missing quite a bit of the newer libs like the qtopia pim api and iirc all of libqtopia, so it seems a bit safer to call it a 1.4/1.5 series than a 1.7 or 2.1

Qtopia 2.1 is the newest from trolltech..(the sharprom is Qtopia 1.5, opie is supposedly Qtopia 1.7 done on a newer compiler)  very pretty, snappy works well and some cool features (like fullscreen handwriting)

Actually no, Opie like the Sharp software is derived from Qtopia 1.4 and developed independantly with occaisional merges of useful code from newer Qtopia releases. Also, as far as I know opie has no support for full screen handwriting recognition.

Angstrom & OpenZaurus / Browser For 3.5.2 Opie

I think that we have to compile a kernel with so much modules as possible. The needed kernel modules can then be dowloaded from the website.
There is very little reason to compile most things as modules. The amount of flash used by the kernel is fixed in size around 1MB. If we compile everything as a module the kernel becomes 500k and half of that is unused. The space for modules now gets taken out of the space for your root file system. If you compile them in you get the extra space on your file system and you leave less flash unusable.

Has anyone happened to have heard what the outlook is for the Openembedded site to come back up? Like maybe a timetable?

It varies. In some cases they were fairly quick, but in others they took a couple of weeks.

Angstrom & OpenZaurus / Files Tab

First off to the OZ team, great work.  This is the first OZ release (3.5.1) I've really sat down and tried, and I do like it a lot.  But more than anything, with Sharp dropping support for the Z, it's great that there are still community members willing to work towards it.

I was wondering if there is any chance we might see a Sharp-esque "Files" tab in OZ.  I normally have A LOT of files on SD cards, and so I have to have the "Documents" tab turned off (or else it takes forever to load, blah blah blah).   In contrast, the "Files" tab in itself was enough to convince me to upgrade to Sharp ROM 3.10.

There is a program called MyPDA that replaces the entire launcher with a filer-browser-like interface here.  It's designed for OZ, so maybe it would be an easy start for something like this.  The source doesn't appear to be available yet, but the fact that there's a note like that makes me believe it's GPL.

Anyway, thanks again for your efforts, and please keep up the good work.

The source hasn't been available since I last checked it out, probably a year ago. I wouldn't hold my breath.

1) Can I buy a 760/860 from Japan and use it in America(Hawaii)?  Do I have to load another rom like OZ.  I've never tried that yet on my 5500.
You can convert most of the stock software to english without reflashing.

Quote
2) Can I use my 5500 apps on the 760/860?  I've bought some from the Kompany and I assume I would have to get other ones since they seem to have a different pick.  Are all apps like this?
This depends on the app. Much of the Kompany's stuff has C7x0 specific versions, but most apps should work fine.

Quote
3) I'm going to be staying at Ikebukuro, but I 'll go any place in Tokyo to get one.  In another post some people were saying that 7xx were going for $350 and the 860 is going for $700.  From what I read, the major difference between the 760 and the 860 is the ram, but what about the 750.   Does anybody know where the $350 760's are sold?

The only major difference between a 760 and an 860 is the software ( the 860 has some different software) and the color scheme. Other than that they are identical. The difference with the 750 is the ammount of flash ( storage space) and the size of the battery that is in the box

4)  Do all versions (750/760/860) have a usb host?
None of these devices have usb host support

Angstrom & OpenZaurus / Todo List field discrepancy

Hi treke,

Thanks for the info.  It doesn't really make any sense to me why this was changed though; is there a version of Qtopia Desktop that uses the summary field?  Or is there something else I can sync up with Windows and Linux that will use the summary field?  I'm trying to figure out how to migrate myself from using the Sharp ROM to OZ as best as I can, and I haven't come across the information yet with regards to this.

Thanks,
steven
It was changed to introduce new functionality that the developers wanted. Qtopia Desktop doesn't support it, and since it's a closed source application the Opie developers can't update it. At the moment there is no good way of syncing opie with windows.

Angstrom & OpenZaurus / Todo List field discrepancy

Update: I noticed on the Opie website that the screen shots for the TODO application use "Description".  The opie todo list I have on OZ 3.5.1 uses Summary.

Can someone please explain why this has change?  It makes using QTopia Desktop on Linux absolutely useless as the fields don't match up.

Thanks,
steven
The screenshots on the opie website are old. What used to be one field in qtopia and old versions of Opie are now two different fields.

Software / Opie-write keeps crashing!!
« on: September 10, 2004, 01:57:33 pm »

Hi,

I have had a problem with Opie-Write crashing after one page of text. Opie-write starts normally, but as soon as the first page of text fills up (when you would expect a scrollbar to appear), it freezes. If I try to open a document which is longer than one page it also freezes.

The weird thing is that I have experienced the same problem with several different ROMs. I have tried flashing with OpenZaurus 3.3.5, 3.3.6-pre1 and now the Hantges ROM (3.3.6-pre1 with Opie 1.1.3). It makes no difference what version of Opie or Opie-write I am using, all give the same problem.

My Zaurus is a 5000D with 16 Mb flash ROM and a 0 Mb storage/32 Mb RAM zImage. I have a 64 Mb CF card and a 256 Mb SD card. Most of my applications are on the SD card, which is where Opie-write is installed.

Has anyone else experienced this problem and is there a solution or workaround?

Thanks,

Michael
Simple solution, don't use opie-write.  Anything over a page of text crashes it.

Deals and Great Z Buys / C860 from PriceJapan.com

I just ordered a C860 to replace my dead C760 from them last week ( while they were on vacation). Total with DHL shipping to the US was 601 bucks. Received an email from them on the 24th ( the day they said they'd be back from vacation) saying they'd shipped my device out and checked the tracking number. Sure enough they'd sent it out already and DHL had tried delivering it to my door 6 hours earlier
As usual, it takes longer for the device to make it 10 miles across town than it does to make it half way around the world. My 860 arrived from Price Japan in one piece. The price of 860s even dropped 10 bucks since I bought mine last week

General Discussion / Java Development: "Qt/Embedded data not owned by
« on: August 09, 2004, 06:23:04 pm »

Title says it all, trying to run a Java program from command line (installed by IPK, but GUI launch not working yet) and when I run the program I get the

"Qt/Embedded data not owned by user 0"

even when I run it as root.

This would seem to be a common problem, but I am not sure if it a java problem (where I am reading resources from) or an IPK problem (where I put the resources) or some like they don't agree.

Any help would be apprected.
There is a hard coded check in qte that the person running the application is the same as the person running qte. Root wont match that check

Talked to our Japanese contacts again (they talked to their Sharp Contacts...)

And the latest info. according to them is. In confidence, no gurantee but ... :

The leak are due to misinterpretation and new clamshells are planned by Sharp but are still in prototype stage. Not expecting new models to be released unitl end of the year.

Based on the timetables for the C700 thru C860 series, I wouldn\'t expect any new clamshells till the end of the year at the *very* earliest. After all, the C860 has been out only about 6 months.

And, considering how much improvement went into the early changes & releases in the C7x0s, probably later rather than sooner for any significant improvements ti the more mature C860.

Of course, if I\'m wrong, I will have no choice except to \"punish\" myself by buying one of the new clamshells right away. <G>.

Go ahead, Sharp Japan! Make me a liar! <G>.

I dunno. For the purpose of a timeline, I\'d consider the 760 and the 860 to be the same product since it was really just a software update and repacking of an already existing device.

6000 - Tosa / My 6000 bricked, temporarily

I had the same issue as \"2) The 6000 can\'t start up if the battery is drained. Even when plugged in.\" with a C860.  I let the battery go completly dead, plugged it in and it wouldn\'t start up for about 10 minutes.  After the batter charged for about ten minutes it turned on.  But it would not turn on being plugged into the wall with a dead battery.

This is sort of a feature. The device wakes up, notices that it\'s horribly low on power, and goes right back to sleep again before doing things like turning the LCD back on. I dont know how hard it would be to pull that bit of code out of the kernel, but it\'s probably doable. Cant see it being all that helpful though
