Accessories / Anyone using mp3 player hard drives?
« on: June 24, 2004, 10:45:23 pm »
A while ago there was a thread about extracting a 4 gig micro drive in a flash card from a popular mp3 player.

Does anyone know if any of the recent 20 or 30 gig mp3 players also use a compact flash based hard drive?

I was looking at the creative nomad, rca lyra, rio karma and something called a archos.  These are all 20 or 30 gig units and I am wondering if any of them use compact flash drives.  I've checked the net and I haven't found anything one way or the other.

Zaurus - pdaXrom / can someone make a zip file of feed
« on: June 17, 2004, 08:56:49 am »
I really want to start using pdaxrom (currently using tkc on my 860) but I\'m having problems getting the networking connected.  I know that I need to fix that, but it can wait.

What I really want is to be able to load various packages, but its hard to do without being online.  Is it possible to make a zip file available with everything in it that I could just unzip to a CF card and install locally?

Preference would be for 2 files - one stable and one unstable.

This would be much appreciated.

Sharp ROMs / using nand to move between roms
« on: May 04, 2004, 06:37:19 am »
I\'m wondering if a nand restore will undo the root size repartitioning that I did when I tried out pdaxrom.  It seems it should, but I don\'t know where the partition size info is stored.

What I did

1. I\'ve been running tkc for a while
2. I did a nand backup of the tkc install
3. Ran pdaxrom installer which included a root repartition to 50 megs
4. Tried pdaxrom
5. I did a nand restore of my tkc rom over top of the pdaxrom installation

I just want to be sure that the 50 meg repartitioning won\'t affect my tkc install.

Zaurus - pdaXrom / installing ipkgs without network
« on: May 03, 2004, 08:03:31 pm »
I\'ve had some problems installing packages on the pdaxrom without network connection.

First
C860
pdaxrom 1.0.5
all ipks from current pdaxrom feed (24 April).

I\'ve tried two different ways of installing packages and I had two problems

First:

I installed pdaxrom 1.0.5.  I downloaded all the ipks from the feed (since I don\'t have network connectivity yet I had to do this manually - boo).  I started installing ipks using package manager going directly to the file list on my cf card to install them.  This seemed to work and I was able to use the installed programs.  However, after installing a bunch of programs, it just wouldn\'t install any more.  No error message or anything.  I could select any package and nothing would install.

Second:

I reinstalled tkcrom because I had to get some work done.  Then, I re-installed pdaxrom again from scratch.  This time I changed /etc/ipkg.conf to point to the directory with the ipks on my cf card.  This didn\'t work - I got an \"error reading Packages file\".  So I then accessed the \"Packages\" file on the cacko feed (a bit tricky but I got it) I copied the contents of this into a file called \"Packages\" in the same directory on my CF card where the ipks were.  Now I get a different message  saying it can\'t read package \"__.ipk\"  hmmmmm.  Something funny going on here.

Now, the problem might be that I just can\'t do it the way I was trying to.  Is there some other way to install the packages without a network connection?

Zaurus - pdaXrom / 2 basic getting started questions
« on: May 03, 2004, 02:54:48 pm »
I have just tried out the pdxrom (1.0.5) and it looks very cool.  I have two questions

1. in pdxrom how do I manage the insertion / extraction of cf and sd cards? In qtopia roms there is an icon to unmount them prior to removing them.  Is there a similar thing I should do before removing them in pdxrom?

2. I\'m trying to get my linksys WCF12 wireless card working.  I go to the system tools - ] lan and set it up as wifi with the correct essid with mode=managed. This seems to be ok but how do I connect?  The led on the card just flashes and when I try to use the package manager to install packages, it doesn\'t list anything.  By the way, I have installed the pcmcia fix (1.0) package using my cf card.

oh, for reference I have an 860 and if i run xcardinfo the linksys wifi card shows up fine.

General Discussion / looking for rom / PIM combo for an 860
« on: April 02, 2004, 09:23:25 am »
Can someone suggect a ROM / PIM combo that works?

My needs are:

1. A translated rom that can be installed on an 860
2. A PIM that works and uses a data format that is readable (ie. not DTM format)

I\'ve been using TKC 2.5.1 and the opie PIM apps version \"1.0.0-sharprom\". But it turns out that the opie todo has a bug that make it unusable (It doesn\'t save changes until close). Even though I\'d like to get into zaurus development and just fix it myself, I just don\'t have time right now.

My problems are that I haven\'t been able to install OZ on my 860.  The default PIMs with TKC use DTM format which is doesn\'t allow easy editing.  With TKC I have only been able to get the 1.0.0-sharprom from the handhelds site to install (which has the previously mentioned bug). X11 is cool but there are no PIM apps.  I tried the cacko rom, but it has the same PIM problems as TKC.  I understand that OZ development has morphed into OpenEmbedded, but it doesn\'t seem to be \"ready\" for newbies like me.

Has anyone had luck with an 860?  When I first got it, I tried a lot of the various roms and software but I haven\'t had time lately to keep trying diferent combinations.  I\'d like to hear if someone with an 860 has things working.

Software / big bug in opie-todo
« on: April 01, 2004, 05:12:45 pm »
Ouch big time.  I\'m using tkc rom 2.5.1 on my 860.  I\'m also using opie todo / addressbook / datebook version 1.0.0-sharprom that I got off of the handhelds feed.  I am using this one because its the only one I was able to get to install properly and that stored data in readable format (ie. not DTM).  Everything has been running great for a few months except for a few minor bugs in the PIM apps.

Until today that is.  For some reason my Z crashed or something.  Usually I leave the todo/date/address open all the time as I use them regularily.  I picked it up off my desk and noticed that they wern\'t running anymore and it was asking for the date.  (hence the assumption of the Z crashing).

So, I restarted them all and the databook and addressbook were fine.  They seem to store the data after every change.  However, nothing had been saved in the todo list since the last time it was closed/re-opened.  This was about a week ago.  So I\'ve lost about a week of todo stuff.  This is a pain.  I should be able to count on this sort of thing and I shouldn\'t have to close it down after every change just to make sure its saved.

Is there a PIM with non-DTM storage that works with TKC that is reliable?

Angstrom & OpenZaurus / trying to get 3.3.6-pre1 on 860
« on: February 19, 2004, 06:09:55 pm »
I\'ve been trying to flash 3.3.6-pre1 on my 860 without any luck.

I copied initrd-gcc3.bin, zimage-boxer.bin, updater.sh and the ipks dir from

http://www.openzaurus.org/official/experim...860/3.3.6-pre1/

Renamed appropriately to initrd.bin and zimage.bin (I\'ve also tried zImage.bin, zimage and zImage)

I\'ve repartitioned my memory back to 50 megs from the 25 megs used with tkc.

I\'ve tried re-downloading the files and I\'ve tried flashing from both my cf and my sd card.

Nothing works.  It runs through the flash process, but then hangs at the black screen with the openzaurus logo with the little green dinosaur.

I\'ve read through all the posts I\'ve seen so far and there is nothing that has helped.  Has anyone been able to get 3.3.6-pre1 running on an 860?

Angstrom & OpenZaurus / what "hack" required to get OZ working on 860
« on: February 11, 2004, 10:36:25 am »
I had a question that got lost in the topic http://www.zaurususergroup.com/index.php?n...er=asc&start=15

I have never gotten OZ 3.3.5 or 3.3.6-pre to work on my 860.  The problem was with installing applications (i have already posted in the past to try to solve this.)

In the topic referenced above there was mention of a \"hack\" required to get things working properly and that this \"hack\" was contained in a readme somewhere.  I have not been able to locate a readme containing anything that looks like it would help.  Does anyone know about this?  Is there a set of instructions indicating what should be done after initial installation?

Angstrom & OpenZaurus / opie-todo_1.0.3_arm.ipk
« on: January 21, 2004, 11:29:43 am »
Is anyone using this?  For various reasons, I tried to unpack this ipk, but when I try, it doesn\'t see it as a valid file.  I tried using winzip and winrar on a windows machine as well as tar on my linux box.

I am using the same commands that I have used to successfully unpack other ipks and I have downloaded this file from various feeds, so what I\'m really wondering is if the 1.0.3 ipk on the oz servers is valid.

Software / opie todo on tkc
« on: January 18, 2004, 05:58:04 pm »
Hi, I am using opie todo, addressbook and datebook version 1.0.0 on tkc 2.5.1 on my 860

It works great (much better than the sharp pim).  The only minor problem is that when I go to select more than one category for a task, the list of available categories show up in a grid contorl on the screen that only uses about 30% of the screen.  Only 2 categories are visable and I have to scroll all the time to see the other categories.  I am sure that about 8 or 9 categories would be visible at once if this grid filled up the entire screen.

Has anyone sorted out why this happens and if there is a fix?

Also, I wonder if I can make the font smaller throughout the pim.

Thanks

General Discussion / how to use "install packages via networks" on tkc
« on: January 14, 2004, 08:48:29 pm »
I can\'t quite get this to work.  I am doing the following.

select software icon in settings tab on the os
select install packages via networks
double click package from list to see detail
press install button

now
if I select OK - it just drops back to the os
if I select upgrade it runs something from 0 to 100 percent then nothing

in either case the package is not installed.

I must be missing something.

Software / apps for tkc rom
« on: January 14, 2004, 08:43:45 pm »
I have installed various stuff from proto\'s feed, but I\'m wondering about where to get other applications to run on my 860.

I\'ve tried a lot of stuff from http://www.killefiz.de/zaurus/ but everthing turns out to be for the 5000 series - ie no landscape mode and low res.  I am running the pim from the opie site which works well, so I\'ll be trying other stuff from there, but I\'m wondering what else is available.

I tried to run x11 on my Z partly due to the apps on the cacko site, but I couldn\'t get wireless to work, so its not an option.

any ideas would be great.

Zaurus - pdaXrom / Problem using WCF12 WIFI card
« on: January 13, 2004, 07:45:02 pm »
I have a linksys WCF12 wifi card and I\'m trying to use X11. I have a plain vanilla X11 system that I just installed.  (I have been using TKC 2.5.1 but would like to change over)

So, I insert the card.  The light on the card blinks.  (OK so far)

xcardinfo shows my wifi card.  (looking good)

I used lanconfig to set up a connection. (getting close)

Now, when I open Konqueror and enter a url - it says \"unknown host www.google.ca\".

On TKC I had to press an icon to start the connection.  Do I have to do that on X11 - if so - how?, where? what icon?

General Discussion / screen cleaning
« on: January 13, 2004, 01:52:54 pm »
Any advise on cleaning the screen to get rid of finger prints ?

I\'m thinking a soft cloth and windex or something.
