Angstrom & OpenZaurus / Fixes For 3.5.4 / Tosa (6000 Models)
« on: March 31, 2006, 12:59:29 am »
I am working on getting my site, http://zaurus.thegrantclan.org backup and running.  I hope to have the time this weekend to update the List of Issues for GPE page to show what all issue we see as needing to be fixed to have a usable OZ/GPE on Tosa.  I will also try to post the list on here too.

The hardware is excellent, just the software needs to be stable. I just tried release 3.5.4 and i must say i'm impressed, it's alot better and more stable. Yet there're still are several issue's which are IMPORTANT to be fixed. I'm an unix/linux person, with time i can probably fix a few things myself but i don't have the time for this.

I too do not have the time to help fix these problems(I wish I did since i enjoy the hunt).  I can help test and I am willing to donate money to the cause.  I am willing to add $100 to the pot for a working OZ/GPE with a 2.6 kernel.

I have given up on being able to have my Z sync cleanly with the Exchange server where I currently work so I am back to have a portable handheld computer.

Running e17 is my goal but getting OZ/GPE working with a 2.6 kernel is a good start.

I guess we need to find out who has teh sl6k that are willing to test and work on the creating the list of issues and making sure they are in bugtrackers they need to be in.  Since I am not awear of a bugtracker for openzaurus do we need a keep the list here with links to the bug in its respective bugtracking system?

Cool. Thanks for the info.

If it is an X environment are people using their flavorite WM under OZ like icewm, fvwm, enlightenment, etc? What have people got working? Or are people sticking with GPE?
[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=120092\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]

I currently have e17 instead of gpe.  It is just X so any you shoudl be able to uses any WM that you want.  I know icewm and e17 are both in openembedded already but I am nto sure how well they run.  E17 still needs some work, but I plan on making it run for at least me after using it with pdaxrom(I like the openembedded build env better then pdaxroms).

Also since it is running X I can run programs on the Z or I can export the display of my programs to my X desktop when I have the Z in the doc.  But then again I am uses to having 6 computers with one X display.

6000 - Tosa / Rom Discussion On Tosa
« on: March 06, 2006, 02:35:52 pm »
I am starting to play with running pdaxrom with enlightenment17.

[img]http://www.thegrantclan.org/images/zaurus/pdaxrom_e17_kopi.jpg\" border=\"0\" class=\"linked-image\" /]

I currently have USB networking so that I can uses x11vnc to control the 6k while it is in the cradle.

KOPI has imported my ics file so I have access to my currect calender.  The lack of Pi-sync bothers me a little both as of e17 ont he z I so far find it very nice and responsive.

The screen rotate button int he ibar works great.  I was not able to get matchbox to rotate the 6k(at least I coudl nto find how).

The escreenshow module does not work.

Teh battery meter shows 100, 75, 50 , 25 but also show how many minutes it believe I still have left.  I am not sure how accurate it issince I have nto been timing it.

Suspend works from teh power button.  Every time so far this weekend it has returned without a problem but I currently have everythign installed locally and not on a cf or sd card.

I am currently still trying to get Wifi working.

I hope to get wifi working in the next couple of days.

Just though I would put inthat info about using pdaxrom on the 6k...

Zaurus - pdaXrom / Pdaxrom On My 6000, Now What?
« on: March 06, 2006, 10:57:16 am »
That was the page I forgot to include in my last post.  Though after gettign that working I followed the instructions on http://gefechtsdienst.de/uman/Zaurus_C-860...etup/index.html so that I could run e17 on my 6k.  I run enlightenment on all of my Linux desktops so it is nice to have it on my Z also.

I am still working on getting wifi and my Targus Keyboard working.  Though we will see what I think of it after a few days.

6000 - Tosa / Outlook Sync, Wifi Access And Ssh Is All I Ask
« on: February 28, 2006, 03:33:25 pm »
I am finally back again after many months, July to November of not using my 6k, of not using my Z.  Most of it being my own fault of not thinking about that I could uses the dock to charge my Z instead of the plug ont he bottom of the Z.  The 6k can take a beating, I drop my several times a day and it still works but falling off a desk with the power cord plug in can bend the pin for the power connecter.

But enough about my mishaps, on to the reason from my return and new post.

During the time I was not using my Z my office change its policy on the wifi network.  Now they require WEP.  I know that the Z can uses WEP since I used it when I was at school.  My problem with using WEP is that they will not give me the key.  Our IT staff enters the key into our computers.  They will not put it on my Z since it shows the WEP key in clear text as it is being typed in.  They want to have stars appear when they enter the key before they will allow my Z on the network.  I am not sure if pdaxrom or OpenZaurus do this since I have not flashed over to them since I got my Z back up and running in November.

Can any one tell me if one of the other roms stars out the WEP key as it is being entered.  I am not going to tell them it is being stored to teh file system in a plan text file but if I can get to so that it is entered in with stars and verified my IT staff will be happy.

Here is my only restrictions to be able to switch rom.(I know I was one of the first people with openzaurus on a 6k but life has changed since those times)  I need to be able to sync with my Outlook Calendar/Entourage Calendar.  I currently use my doc to sync on my windows workstation at work and then use KO/Pi to sync from the SharpDTM to get my calendar so that I have my alarms and know where I should be an what I should be doing.  I know before July when I was still using the wifi network here at work, I was work on being able to have KO/Pi on my windows workstation sync with outlook and then have KO/Pi on my desktop sync with that from anywhere in the office when I was using OpenZaurus.  I never got this to work very well since it required me to do an import from ol when every I wanted to do this.  I am now starting on working seeing what I can do about this, but any recommendations or alternatives would be great.

I hate the idea that I am going to have to buy a palm or a Treo just so I can have my calendar with me, though I am looking at getting a Motorola A780 so that I can have everything in one instead of carrying to many items.  I have loved my Z when I have been using it over the late year and a half+.  It really helped with my Senior year on college, but I was able to keep my calender and todos on my Z and did not have to worry about syncing with anything else other then making a backup to my CF card.

Now that I have rambled away let me recap on my question:

1.  Can I get it so that entering the WAP does not show on the screen?
2.  If I switch roms to achieve the first question do I have a easy way to sync with my outlook calendar and todo’s?

anyone know about usb modules in OZ?
specifically, is there usb mouse, keyboard and storage support?
[div align=\"right\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]

Since I have not work with OE and OZ since before christmas I can not say this is current.

Last time I built a copy of 3.5.2 I had to go change the defconfig-tosa to so that the CONFIG_USB_* stuff was set to m so that it would build the modules I wanted for the keyboard, mouse, jumpdrive, usb cd-rw, and keyspan usb to serial adapter.  Once I had them built I just installed the kernel-module-usb* that I wanted.

I have my kernel modules at [a href=\"http:///zaurus.thegrantclan.org/download/zaurus/openzaurus/feed]http:///zaurus.thegrantclan.org/download/z...openzaurus/feed[/url] for both 2.4.18-rmk7-pxa3-embedix-r16 and 2.4.18-rmk7-pxa3-embedix-r24.  not sure if either of those are for the kernel used with 3.5.2.

um... grant rom??  care to elaborate?
[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=63112\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]

Grant rom is my custom rom.  It started out as a striped down version of OpenZaurus GPE that included bitchx, firefox and the full version of vim.  My current version is justa  bootstrap with bitchx, screen, openssh, and vim that statys at console all the time and uses a usb keyboard.   It has been my attempt to uses OE to make a rom that included the tools I wanted and took out the tools I would never use.  It is in oe so others could uses it but it is not very usable last time I built it.

6000 - Tosa / Usb Ethernet Adaptor

Has anyone tried using a USB ethernet adaptor with the SL6000? I looked at the sl6000 kernel source and it didn't have support for the either of the two adaptor's I'm thinking of buying, so I've back-ported the drivers from a more recent 2.4 series kernel (the ax8817x and rtl8150 usb drivers).

However, it's not worth me actually buying the thing if the Z won't put out enough juice to power it up. Anyone know if it's likely to work?

If it does work, eBuyer are flogging an RTL8150 adaptor from Dynamode for like, £6 - which is a bit of a bargain really....
[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=63179\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]

I have used my Dlink DWL-122 and my Hawking Technology HUF11 on my 6k before, with and without a powered hub.  The HUF11 I had to pull a module from my OE build of the kernel and the DWL-122 was from my build of wlan-ng.  So it can work.  I have nto used them for long periods so I am not sure how battery life is...

6000 - Tosa / Keyboard Comparison, Please
« on: January 19, 2005, 11:49:48 am »
I uses my Targus IR keyboard or a usb keyboard alot with my 6k...being able to use a full size natural keyboard is nice to be able to do on the 6k...Having only used a 5600 for about 15 minutes I thoughts the keys where harder to uses then the ones on the 6k...but then again I think the keyboard on the Cxxx is harder to type on then the 6k...but I had a treo that sent text message and took notes on before I got my 6k so I was really uses to the thumb board...Just my thoughts...

Nevarrie, at zaurus.grantclan.org do you have a how to on setting up a flash from a homebuilt (oe) image?
I'd love to flash from my externe-kernel sharp setup to something feshly compiled and back, but have no idea how to use the oe built jiff image. I cn't solve the 6k harware issues, but I cn definitely check progress
[div align=\"right\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]

the updater.sh that is on openzaurus.org does not easily allow for custom roms...my updater.sh makes it alittle easier to do this..you can get my updater.sh [a href=\"http://zaurus.thegrantclan.org/download/zaurus/files/updater.sh/updater.sh-20041112.tar.gz]Here[/url].

The tar file contains the tools dir and and updater.sh file.  You would place the tools dir and the updater.sh  in the root of your sd, or cf card.  This updater.sh give you the option to put the .jffs2 file in tools/opie/, tools/gpe/, tools/pdaxroom/ or the root of the sd or cf card.  This is how I flash between all of my roms as needed.  I usually keep my most recent opie in tools/opie/, my most recent gpe on tools/gpe, my most resent grantrom in the root of my SD card, and I keep the sharp rom files in the root of my CF card.  The menu system of the updater.sh allows you to choice which rom you are wanting to install except for the sharp rom(Requires doing the Q + T + Reset)...

Hope that helps...

Accessories / Aircable Bluetooth Of Cf Bluetooth
« on: January 12, 2005, 04:18:50 pm »
I finally got my first bluetooth fun over christmas.  No I am in the market to get bluetooth on my Zaurus so that I can take advanatage of the MediaNet package I signed up for with my v551 with Cingular.

The product I thought of first when I started looking for a bluetooth adapter was the Aircable for the zaurus.    When I went to http://www.aircable.com I found they are no longer making these unless you are ordering >100.  I have now found a place that still has a few that have not been sold.

So now I need to decided if the Aircable is right for me or if I need to go with a CF bluetooth card.  Here are some of my Questions:
  • What will I really see a s the major differences in using the Aircable vs a CF bluetooth card?
  • Are teh speeds the same or about equal?
  • Will I gain anything using a CF bluetooth card over the Aircable?
I am still very new to bluetooth so I do not understand everything about it.  I like the idea of the aircable since I can also uses it to tip into my Solaris servers and it does not take up my CF slot so I have access to all of my apps and documents stored on cf while using it, though I can always get a sled and uses that to give me two cf slot so I can have bluetooth and a cd media at the same time.

Although I'm going to keep my super-souped up PC for many things, I'm seriously looking at getting the Nanode when that comes out, so I can build a MythTV-based DVR.

But the Z is my travel PC. It's nice to have a very-functional device that, well, *almost* fits in your pocket.
One of my hopes is to be able to uses my Zaurus as a mythtv frontend then I can watch my records on my Z...

For Sale / Wanted / *good* Serial Cable For Server Admin?

I am guessing no one has found anyone selling the AIRcable module for the Zaurus.  I have found one place in Europe, Xtops but I have not found anywhere in the US.  Does anyone else make something like this so I can still uses my cf card or will I have to get a sled?
