« on: November 05, 2006, 09:55:46 am »
Hey all,

just in case you haven't been following the "Hentges Rom: New Versioning System" thread,
here is a little heads-up to new root-on-SD-only Poodle images.

Testing them would be much appreciated.

Angstrom & OpenZaurus / Hentges Rom: New Versioning System
« on: October 23, 2006, 11:17:57 am »
Hello all,

as of today, Hentges ROMs will use a different versioning system which is independent from OpenZaurus releases / versions, please read Versioning.txt for details.

You can find snapshots for Akita, Spitz and Collie here:
EDIT:http://hentges.net/tmp/snapshots/Hentges-ROM/1.0.0/20061030/

and for Poodle here:
http://hentges.net/tmp/snapshots/Hentges-ROM/1.0.0/20061104/

Known Problems so far:

All devices:
- none at this time

SL-C3x00 + SL-C1000 aka Spitz & Akita:
- The hostap_cs WIFI driver does not survive a suspend / resume cycle
- cat some_soundfile.raw > /dev/dsp does no longer work ( mplayer & friends still produce sound )

SL-5500 + SL-5000 aka Collie:
- mplayer fails to start with libmad error
- ipkg.conf points to a missing machine feed

SL-5600 aka Poodle:
- The hostap_cs WIFI driver does not survive a suspend / resume cycle
- Sound is working but distorted,
- GPE's key-bindings are incomplete

Angstrom & OpenZaurus / Hentges 3.5.4.2 Rcs Available
« on: September 20, 2006, 06:21:49 am »
I've uploaded completely untested 3.5.4.2 Hentges images:
http://hentges.net/tmp/do_not_use/

Please note that Akitas version is not T2-RC* but T1-RC1, I only noticed the problem when the upload was finished.

New machines (spitz / collie) will be added once they are compiled.

EDIT: Please note that Collie runs an up-to-date 3.5.4.1 w/ kernel 2.4

Angstrom & OpenZaurus / Hentges Rom For Spitz
« on: June 22, 2006, 11:43:31 pm »
Hey all,
some people have been asking for "Hentges" style Spitz images. Since Spitz is mostly identical to Akita I thought I'd give it a try.

http://hentges.net/tmp/do_not_use/spitz/

I can't really test this image and the kernel since I do not have access to a Spitz. Please test and let me know how it works out.

I don't know what the default partitioning for the HDD on Spitz is but I suggest a rootfs partition of at least 150Mb.

Currently there are problems with building jffs2 and ext2 images, the machine is pretty much hard-wired to tar.gz tarballs.

Hello all!

After Hundreds of CVS and OE commits, countless hours of hacking, tuning and tweaking,
after digging through 18Gb of source code compiled into 2Gb of binary data for two machines in
three configurations,

I can now proudly present the first stable Hentges ROM Release after 13 month.

Grab it while it's hot

Happy flashing

Angstrom & OpenZaurus / Poodle Kernel 2.6 Preview
« on: May 21, 2006, 11:27:20 am »
Hey all,

At http://hentges.net/tmp/Poodle-Kernel-2.6/ you'll find an experimental Opie image for Poodle with kernel 2.6.

Be advised that a few kernel related things are still broken (sound, SD/MMC and probably USB) but this preview should give you a good understanding of what is to come

If you find problems with Opie that are related to the switch from kernel 2.4 to 2.6 please let me know but check the Kernel 2.6 Status Page before posting.

Have fun

Angstrom & OpenZaurus / Oz On Poodle, First Impressions
« on: May 09, 2006, 02:53:55 am »
- Device freezes when pressing "Cancel" to suspend. Suspending via menu works fine
- The colors in the VT are all wrong (altboots "new password" wizzard should have RED text, not green, and the normal VT text is supposed to be white, not dirty brown)
- A not-so-standard OZ 3.5.4.1 image freezes on "update-modules" on first boot, ouch

- OE does not have a virtual/kernel setting for Poodle lol (the default is correct however)

3 out of the 4 problems are kernel 2.4 related. Kernel 2.6, here we come

Angstrom & OpenZaurus / New: Hentges Rom Rc For Akita
« on: March 27, 2006, 04:22:15 am »
Hi all

I've finished GPE for Akita yesterday so I thought I'd upload it to get some feedback.
Opie & E17 images will be uploaded when they are ready (maybe next week).

Download the tarball:
EDIT:The new URL is http://hentges.net/tmp/do_not_use/

Content:
Kernel - The current 3.5.4.1 kernel (2.6.15)
tarballs - tar.gz rootfs to be used with altboots tar.gz installer to create a bootable SD / CF card
loop-images - ext2 loop-images. These can be booted directly off SD / CF using       altboot. Requires kernel 2.6.15 to work
hentges-*-akita*.tar.gz - Flashable initrd for this release

The tarball includes two different images: GPE and bootstrap. The bootstrap image doesn't have a GUI installed, just the commandline. The GPE image is probably the one your are after

For a normal installation (into the flash) all you need is
 - The kernel
 - hentges-gpe-akita*.tar.gz or hentges-bootstrap-akita*.tar.gz
 - updater.sh from OZ3.5.4*

To use the .ext2 loop-image all you need is
 - An already installed 2.6.15 kernel (the one from 3.5.4.1-apha* should work just fine)
- An already installed altboot bootmanager (again, the one from 3.5.4.1-alpha works just fine)
- One or more ext2 loop-images from the "loop-images" folder
- Rename the .ext2 file so that it ends in "-rootfs.bin" (example: hentges-gpe-image-rootfs.bin and / or hentges-boostrap-image-rootfs.bin)
- Create a folder called "boot-images" on your SD or CF card
- Copy *rootfs.bin into the folder "boot-images"
- Reboot the Z, launch the altboot menu and select "Boot from [SD | CF]

To create your own loop-image or to install this release directly onto a SD or CF card
you'll need to:
 - Copy one of the files from tarballs/*.rootfs.tar.gz onto SD, CF or into /home
 - Reboot your Z
 - Launch altboot and select "Advanced/Install tar.gz" (or whatever that was called  )
 - Follow the instructions (loop-file installs into a loop-image with user-defined size / name, "direct install" installs the FS directly onto the card which *must* be ext2-formatted in this case!
- Select "Boot from [CF | SD] when the altboot menu shows up

Please note(1): If your SD / CF card is large enough you can install multiple loop-images and a direct install onto it

Please note(2): When booting from SD / CF you'll see the message "* * *Booting external rootfs * * *" (or something to that effect). Each and every message after this is coming from the new rootfs!
Since altboot is installed into the new rootfs you'll get a second altboot menu right after this above message is printed. Do not touch it if you do not know what you are doing.

Please note(3): When booting from something else but flash you'll see some errors about not beeing able to mount /sys and /proc. You can safefly ignore them.

General Notes about the GPE Image
- The image is based on the OZ 3.5.4.1 sources from yesterday
- Yes, it runs the new and shiny 2.6.15 kernel
- Sound works out of the box
- All hotkeys (except the ones printed on the LCD) work (thanks florian!):
-- The Calendar, Adresses, E-Mail and Menu buttons work as expected
-- Pressing Home switches through all open windows
-- Fn+Home minimizes all windows and shows the desktop
- The installed apps include (beside others):
-- Abiword
-- Gnumeric
-- Gaim
-- Gftp
-- A working and pre-configured (!) mplayer (read /usr/etc/mplayer/mplayer.conf to enable correct playback in the VT)
-- Gxine (untested!)
- The 2.6.15 kernel is compiled in "quiet" mode. There will be no message what-so-ever until after the kernel is booted. This is completly normal
- During boot a Splashscreen with the GPE logo will show up and hide all boot-messages. Use Fn+Left-Arrow to show the messages.
- The first boot can take a few minutes due to run-time configuration. This is completely normal.

Have fun

« on: January 16, 2006, 01:59:29 pm »
Hi all

I've uploaded RC1 of the new Hentges ROM, featuring Openzaurus 3.5.4RC and Opie 1.2.1

Supported devices are: Collie & Akita
Poodle should follow in a few days.

If you have never used a Hentges ROM before, you should read the CardFS Feature List and the CardFS HowTo

Both Openzaurus 3.5.4RC, and Opie 1.2.1 appear to very stable so I do not expect many
RC's

Please post any bugs you may find.

Happy flashing

C1000/3x00 General discussions / Sl-c1000 Openzaurus Status
« on: July 21, 2005, 12:12:53 am »
Hi guys,
I'm currently working on a better Akita support for OZ.

Here's the current status of a Akita build from yesterday:

Keyboard
 - Home key: works
 - Left-Shift: works
 - Switching between VTs: doesn't work
 - "Wheel": works (mapped to up/down)
 - "Ok" and "Cancel" side buttons: work
 - Application hot-keys (calendar etc): work
 - Suspend by "On" key: doesn't work

Opie core support:
(Machine definition was added to libopie2)
 - Switching brightness: works
 - Auto-Rotate: works

OZ core support:
 - USB storage, net and USB host: working

Bugs / Problems I've notived:
 - LibSDL is currently broken, I'll have a patch ready soon (prboom in 640x480 is sloooooow)
 - Screen tap and key-click sounds don't work (might be a problem with my build)
 - SD card support was totally fubar last time I've checked (things may have changed)
 - The rotation is wrong on in Opie on boot (problem w/ /etc/init.d/opie)

Please post other fundamental problems with OZ's Akita support here or enter them into the bug-tracker.
Please do not post application bugs, only OS bugs.

I'll upload new Akita Opie images this week, stay tuned

Angstrom & OpenZaurus / "bootmanger" For Zaurus
« on: May 29, 2005, 01:22:56 pm »
Hey all!

I'm currently in the process of writing a "boot manager" for Zaurus which allows booting
off of SD and CF cards.

The current features are:
 - Can boot a "real" filesystem from SD and CF
 - Can boot ext2 loop-images containing a filesystem from SD and CF
 - loop-images are fsck'ed on each boot.
 - Allows to boot into other runlevels
( This is interesting for OZ 3.5.4 as it features a new, GUI-less runlevel)
 - Allows to drop into an emergency shell (init=/bin/sh)
This is a real life-saver when messing w^H^H^H^H^H debugging the device

I've currently only tested it on Collie (Z5500 / Z5000). To make it work on the clam-shells
(or any other Z now shipping w/ kernel 2.6) I'd need volunteers.

Someone needs to figure out how to mount the SD and CF cardfs under kernel 2.6, that's basically all.
A basic manual can be found here: http://www.hentges.net/misc/openzaurus/docs/altboot.shtml

and the.ipk is here: http://hentges.net/tmp/altboot/ (yep, no messing with the system required, just install and be done with it  )

NOTE: Installing this ipk might render your Z unbootable (if Z != collie and OS != OZ 3.5.x)
PLEASE BACKUP ALL IMPORTANT DATA

I can upload some ext2 collie images to play with if you want. I have a shiny new opie snappshot lying around and a combined opie/GPE ROM. However, since the image are device-dependent, they'll only work on collie.

Angstrom & OpenZaurus / Openzaurus 3.5.3 Pre-release
« on: March 14, 2005, 04:13:53 pm »
Hello all!

A OZ 3.5.3 pre-release is available at http://oz.hentges.net/snapshots/.
Currently, there's only a collie Opie image online, more will be added when someone finds the time to build them

The feed isn't complete. It only contains Opie packages. In the final release you'll find all packages from 3.5.2 (and more).

Please help the OZ team with testing this ROM. Each and every bug you encounter with this ROM is
very likely to be found in the final release.

So, if you encounter problems, please reply to this thread.

Thanks
