Cosmo Communicator - CoDi / CoDi is a broken feature at this point

This device works exactly as designed and intended, so no it isn't "broken," and it isn't "garbage"

CoDi is designed to consume vast amounts of battery and respond so sluggishly as to be largely unusable?  Let's be honest here.  It is, in its current state, "broken".

Hopefully its performance can be greatly improved through software updates, but it's quite clear that currently, it is most certainly not "working exactly as designed and intended".

Exactly! Thank you for point it out sir!

I'm constantly on a debate with myself whether I should leave it on when I took the phone out. If I leave it on, my battery gets drained super fast. If I turn it off, I won't know who is calling me, and I won't be able to answer the phone without opening it.

edit:
Thankfully I'm don't have to rely on CoDi recently for some ***censored reasons***

Cosmo Communicator - Linux / Newly installed Debian: no Bluetooth
« on: March 17, 2020, 12:46:37 am »
This version of Linux we get is more of a proof of concept than an actual usable OS. It's more like "see! we have linux working on our phone" thing. From my understanding, it's missing drivers for a lot of hardware. I do not recommend using it extensively because the UI can burn images on our OLED screen. At this stage, I don't see the battery management turning off the screen on it's own. The screen is on even if you close the phone.

Here is the latest update from this wiki page for Gemini PDA. Sailfish OS for Cosmo suppose to be ported from this build. But even this build won't be finished.

Edit 2019-11-24
This will probable be my last edit in this wiki. We have Sailfish 3 version 3.2.0.14 for a while. Updating to new versions is easy with it. But I cannot see any progress. We still have no alien dalvik for the device, Jolla promised for 'Final phase'. I do not believe we will get it in future. But may be Jolla knows more secrets about it. And other features are still missing or buggy, here a partial list (answer calls with gemini is closed, switch microphone, screen orientation, apps orientation, battery drain with wifi, alarm not working). The device is good enough for playing around with sailfish only, but far from be a daily driver since 1.5 years.

Planet Computers says community will bring Sailfish OS to cosmo, and Jolla says the manufacture must start the process. They were all hoping other people to do the job.

I had to delete the latest post from SwordfishII since it crossed the line. Please everyone behave, and try to understand that different people have different expectations from the Cosmo: what could be an acceptable behaviour of the device for someone, for someone else it is not.

Yes sir.

Um ok? A full day and another half day on a single charge really isn't "broken" How long do you consider enough, because that is pretty good in the cellphone world.

It is great for you if you are happy with the result. However, I don't think CoDi suppose to behave this way. The software is clearly broken on mine. And mine is already updated. Planet Computers know it's broken, otherwise they won't need to give us an option to turn it off.

I boutght this one: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01C3ZKJY...=UTF8&psc=1

It arrived yesterday. I only used it once briefly. So far I think it works well. I'll use it to drive to work tomorrow.

I've also been using Cosmo Communicator as my daily driver. The CoDi display drives me nuts. It is suppose to be THE feature that makes this thing a functional phone. But no, it is the most annoying thing I've ever seen on a smart phone. It drains battery like crazy. It turns on things by itself. The animation is wacky and laggy.

Everything works better if I turn the CoDi off, but I'll miss notifications.

Hello I often got my comso offline (airplane-mode, turn off mobiles/wifi, etc.), made boring cinema in my pocket ending with surprised face of mine, enabled don't-disturb-me...

I'd like to enable lock on outer screen but don't wan't lock the inner one. It's important for me I still can see the same screen (Clock, notifications, etc...) while it's locked.

Are there a way how to accomplished it?

Also I want to know if Planet has a git-repo of their CODI so I could modify it by myself and flash my Cosmo. That would be great!

Best regards
Floh

There is an open source firmware that some one is working on. https://www.oesf.org/forum/index.php?showtopic=36060
But it is not official. CoDi is broken. I had to turn it off most of the time.

That is a great idea. It's not that hard of a thing to do. Many countries have non-google version Androids because of censorship. Chinese smart phone companies have their own Android OS that doesn't use a single bit of google service. But there is a catch, they replace Google services with more intrusive and more aggressive their own version of everything. Chinese phones spys more than Google android. And Chinese government almost have full control of those smart phones.

So, I like the idea of making a non-google android. But without a way to make profit like those Chinese companies do, people won't have too much of a motivation to keep developing this thing. The best way to make a healthy open source non-google non-apple OS is to do something Raspberry Pi did. Cheap open source hardware that have millions of users. The community will take care of everything.

Cosmo Communicator, and all other smart phones that trying to be non-google are all in a bad situation. Hardware are not open source, communities are small and divided. OS has to be specifically made for every single phone, and it has to be maintained regularly. It is a labor intensive job.

I haven't had this happen where all settings go to default.

However, I *have* had it happen where I have touched the CoDi screen while my Cosmo is open, and accidentally turned things on or off that way.  Like today I accidentally turned on battery saver mode when I touched CoDi while Cosmo is open.

It has been noted in the forum (and I have confirmed) that even when the Planet logo is showing, CoDi will accept input.  You can swipe the controls down and poke icons.

I always lock my device with fingerprint lock before putting it in a pocket so accidental CoDi input won't do anything, but if yours is unlocked or swipe-locked that might explain some of your un-commanded settings changes.  WiFi, Bluetooth, Airplane Mode, Battery Saver, etc. can all be accidentally switched from the CoDi menus.

I had that happen to me too. My CoDi recorded a 2 minute video by itselt while I was doing something else on the inner scree.

So it's a quality control issue?
How you unlock it doesn't change a thing. I can also use finger print, it is the same.
I do not think its about quality control. First thing to check is your codi version. Mine is v1.1.1.13. My android is 01182020-v19. If any of yours is less than that first thing would be updating. If yours are the same than I would assume it is something in settings. Like duraspeed for example.

Mine was already up to date. I wouldn't call it broken garbage without doing my part first. You can safely assume every Cosmo Communicator owner knows what he is doing.

It works for me just fine and I find it very useful and quite functional.

One difference in my usage pattern from yours: I unlock using fingerprint, that does unlock the phone.

Another difference: I have the phone plugged into usb port on my computer while at work, and plugged into charger on nighttable while sleeping. So it discharges only for few hours per day when not in one of these two places. Which makes battery disharge non-issue for me.

Regarding  self reboot - I think I witnessed that myself only once, and that reboot took less than (half?) a minute, after which it was fully functional again. So even it does reboots more, I does not seem to affect me.

So it's a quality control issue?

I agree, it's a bit slow but it works well for what it is designed for.

I also wager most people with battery issues have BT/wifi/location/nfc on constantly and brightness maxed.

I get at least a day and a half of moderate usage from mine with codi enabled and used constantly.

I also have huge fingers yet can still dial accurately.

I do get somethings in codi like location randomly turning on but it isn't unusable.

I wish codi allowed viewing mms pictures though.

Sounds like yours is just as broken as mine. One day use without CoDi only comsumed 30+% battery for me.

Cosmo Communicator - CoDi / CoDi is a broken feature at this point
« on: March 14, 2020, 02:24:45 am »
I've been carrying the Cosmo Communicator for one week. I think at this moment the CoDi is broken and not gonna work properly no matter what we do.

first of all, this thing looks very laggy. The animation feels like 12 fps. And it crashes and reboots itself all the time. When you unlock your CoDi with your pin, you really are only unlocking the CoDi. It doesn't unlock the phone.

Most importantly, battery take a huge hit if CoDi is on. It feels like this thing drains as much battery as the rest of the system combined. It is ridiculous. I ended up turning if off the whole day. But if it's off, I can't answer phone calls without opening the phone. I know CoDi will automatically turn itself off with the new update, I am having that function on and the battery still takes huge hit.

The CoDi is in such a pathetic stage that it does nothing good.
