Cosmo Communicator - Android / V21 firmware

I have mobile data on both my sims....

wifi was a bit iffy after I reset it.

cannot seem to get auto rotate to work at all now though....

Wait, this phone actually should have auto rotate? I have never made it work. I thought it doesn't have this feature.

Yes, I  found out why it wasn't working! it has two different settings for it.

1 display- advanced-auto rotate screen

2 app bar-planet-app bar-settings(next to selectable apps)-uncheck force

& hey presto

OH! MY! GOD! It worked!!!!

I have a question for you. I honestly don't know the answer. Why are people so hyped over Sailfish OS even if it has security issues like you said?

Open source security fallacy. People have heard that open source can be more secure, but don't understand under which conditions this is true, so it just becomes a "it's more secure because most of it is open source". This is helped by early Jolla advertising highlighting privacy - which was true as long as you didn't add any additional services - and people mixing up privacy and security.

Thank you for the answer. That explains a lot of things. I'm not so hyped about non-Android linux now.

But that still seems to be a bug as the cursor shows up just fine on Android when using the right side port.

In android  Usb on the right side works only if cover display is enabled.. If you connect a usb mass storage on the right side it will work only if cover display is enabled.

This seems to be the case with charging too. The Cosmo won't charge without CoDi disabled in the right port, and under Debian it'll only charge via the left port. Really weird but I suppose the two are wired together somehow.

Gees... CoDi is such a troublemaker. I was able to charger on the right port with CoDi on, but it was inconsistent. I left it charging on the right port last night, but this morning I found out it stopped charging somewhere during midnight.

That is weird. Do you know why does the USB port has to tie together with the CoDi?

I did a factory reset yesterday too. Now my phone works. I'm too tired to do it again for the 'fixed' update.

Had same experience.....

My little mouse worked fine in linux (gemian), on my Gemini.....

Probably something missing from this initial linux for Cosmo....

Good to know I'm not alone my friend.

I have a wired mouse and it works fine on linux ( left side port ) using a little adapter . ( see photo )

Welp....
I didn't try left side port. It surely does workn on the left side. Thank you for the tip.

Cosmo Communicator - Linux / Mouse support on Linux

I just received my USB type c to regular USB converter today. I plugged in a wireless mouse in Android, it works fine. However, when I boot into Linux, the mouse no longer works no matter what I do.

Is there something I'm missing or is the Linux currently is at such a broken state? I know that the Linux currently lack drivers. I can't even  read correct hardware information from Linux.

I updated mine. I like the newly added features such as auto virtual keyboard after screen rotation. But overall this update broke my phone. A lot of the functions that were good before no longer works. I have rebooted my phone many times. If it persists, I think I might have to factory reset my phone.

Interestingly, my CoDi stays on indefinitely sometimes. I had to manually intervene such actions or it will not turn itself off. Very annoying.

I don't know how many of you have seen this. The Cover Display Assistant app will turn itself on to check for update automatically. I do not know what triggers this action. It is very random to me. The bad thing is, unless I interact with this app, it will keep checking for update indefinitely. This app will not stop itself. I believe it drains battery very badly too.

And a huge side effect is that during the checking of update, the CoDi will stay on indefinitely. As we all know, CoDi is AMOLED display. This defect will burn image on the screen if not being corrected.

I have no discovered any of my action as an user change remedy this defect. I have reported this problem to Planet Computers. I can only hope for an update.

Cosmo Communicator - General Discussion / Cosmo as a daily driver - experiences/review

I've also been using Cosmo Communicator as my daily driver. The CoDi display drives me nuts. It is suppose to be THE feature that makes this thing a functional phone. But no, it is the most annoying thing I've ever seen on a smart phone. It drains battery like crazy. It turns on things by itself. The animation is wacky and laggy.

It's been mentioned in several other threads that the battery drain issue due to CoDi is most likely fixable with firmware update - the one promised for later this month probably does something about it. Essentially, the CoDi display process for some reason holds a wakelock that prevents the CPU from ever going to sleep.

For me, the battery lasts for day and a half with CoDi on, so it's quite all right. Anyway, I expect that the next FW update will improve this bit significantly. Hopefully it also fixes the few other problems with CoDi.

That is good news to hear. I like the idea of having a CoDi. I really hope I can use it normally.

Jolla is very thin on resources since late 2015 when they almost went bankrupt, and most of us left. There wasn't that much change since then, and a lot of issues from back then, including a lot of security issues, remain unfixed. I wouldn't recommend running Sailfish on a daily use device, especially if you care about security.

wow, an insider, thank you for sharing the intelligence.

Planet Computers also only have 9 employees. I think only 3 of them are full time developers. I don't know how far they can go. Most of Android/iOS challengers eventually die out, yet I still purchased Cosmo Communicator hoping this community will continue moving forward little by little.

Cosmo Communicator - Linux / Newly installed Debian: no Bluetooth

This version of Linux we get is more of a proof of concept than an actual usable OS. It's more like "see! we have linux working on our phone" thing. From my understanding, it's missing drivers for a lot of hardware. I do not recommend using it extensively because the UI can burn images on our OLED screen. At this stage, I don't see the battery management turning off the screen on it's own. The screen is on even if you close the phone.

I thought only the cover display is OLED? The cover display does not work at all with Debian currently.

It is indeed an issue that Debian can't be properly suspended at the moment, but I'm using Debian quite happily for hacking a bit Elixir at the moment.

Wait, only the CoDi is OLED? The black level looks pretty good. Well, I guess I don't have to worry about burning images on it anymore.
But how such a small AMOLED on the CoDi consumes so much battery? It is insane.
