I can barely restrain myself from reflashing my 3100 and "doing the cacko" (sounds sweeeet) but the thought of losing my Japanese dictionary is a little painful..  For someone who knows close to zero (of course not me...) how can they keep it?
[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=101650\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]

I believe the Japanese dictionary is in the Cacko feed.  So, after you've installed the ROM, run the package manager, install from network, and select the Cacko feed for your package repository.  Search that for the dictionary.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong...

Do I have to download a Japanese "add-one" first?

I would think so.

I have just flashed and reinstalled the Chinese support with: the input method including fonts and then installed the dictionaries.

Do you know where I can get hold of that Japanese "add-on"?

Hmmm... never flashed before... did the first step: resized the root partition as indicated in the instructions... my Zaurus restarted but it only got to the SHARP screen ("Shibaruku O something kudasai... excuse my inexistent Japanese...   ).

It's been stuck on that screen for at least half an hour... HELP!! What do I do??

Thanks...

Cagilaba,

You need to (1) Resize the root partitition; (2) Reboot; (3) Format user flash; (4) Reboot; (5) Flash the ROM; and then finally (6) Reboot.

Thanks for the tip Bill -- but perhaps I wasn't clear.

I did resize the root partition, the Zaurus started to reboot, but stopped at the white screen with the SHARP logo in red. It stayed there. So I tried the whole process again, taking out the battery first and resizing the root parition. Reboot and... same problem.

The Cacko instructions don't mention anything about formatting the user flash... How is that done? Is it really necessary?

Thanks...

If I remember correctly, the installation routine asks if you want to format the user flash, but there is a menu option for it, I believe.

The first time I flashed the ROM, I chose 121 as the root partition size. My Z hung when booting, so I went back in and set it at the recommended size of 32. Then it worked. So you might want to reflash the ROM with the size of the root partitition as 32MB.

I followed the instructions to the letter -- so all along I have been selecting 32MB. But no sucess.

You change the root partition -> you have done that

Then you have to restart the Zaurus ( battery out, wait 5 secs, battery in, hold OK, power on, externel power plugged in)

Then you should be able to continue the install process as per the instructions ( this is the time to install the cacko rom - no need to change the root partition size again...)

If you just reboot after a root partition size change, you Z may totally lock up...

OK, sorry for being so slow and THANKS for your help. It worked in the end, the problem was basically that after resizing the root partition the Cacko utility rebooted the Zaurus, but the boot wouldn't complete, so I had to force it to turn off by removing the battery (which I don't like doing).

One other thing though... it seemed like there were quite a few error messages as Cacko was booting. E.g. "Cramfs: wrong magic" and "FAT: bogus logical sector size 381."

Is this normal?

I got the same error -  "FAT: bogus logical sector size 381." and Cramfs: wrong magic"
each time I re-flashed and the Zaurus rebooted after the NAND Flash Image step.

This happens on both the full and Lite versions.
Went back to the Full versions (needed the loaded USB modules).

Otherwise everything works fine.

Sorry for semi-cross posting, I was sure where this would go best, but I just installed the new cacko rom, and for some reason I can't play mp3s.  xmms, mplayer, and musicplayer will not play them.  I have tested the files in a sd card on my linux desktop, and everything plays fine...  any ideas?

did you test those same files on the sharprom before switching over?  if not, then how do you know they actually play?

I never used them on sharp's rom, I did use them on pdaxrom, and they play on my desktop w/an sd reader.
