I think I found my problem.
I re-installed "zemufe-zports_0.1.1-3ex_arm.ipk" (from the last version with the genesis addition), thinking it was the same as the newer version.

I'm now installing "zemufe-zports_v1_arm.ipk" which came with this version.

OK, it's working now.
I have Phantasy star running with the new zemufe-zports_v1_arm.ipk
It also places a new icon in the games tab.
I have uninstalled these below files:
gngeo-neogeobios_arm.ipk
gngeo_0.6.11_arm.ipk

I also noticed when I first installed the 2 neogeo specific files, one of them has a dependency on the other.
if you install gngeo_0.6.11_arm.ipk first, you get a dependency warning in the installer GUI.

seems there is a problem with gngeo_0.6.11_arm.ipk
Installing in the console gives this error:

turf doesnt work.  topplayer golf does.  Ill probably make a rom.sh sooner or later.  its not hard...just copy and rename the bin.sh to rom.sh and also, if it does not like it, try forcing it in the gui in emu ex zports by addint a *.rom in the empy space under settings, frontend in expansion.  you can add multiple extensing by separating it with ;
[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=130707\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]
I can see the *.bin files now in superspy.
Which one do I start the game with?
There are 11 files to choose from. Selecting the first one on the list, "011-c1.bin" changes screen like it's starting a game, then throws me back to the file browser in the frontend.

I just tried that and it threw me back to the file browser.
I have zlib 1.2.3-1 installed

That brings up another question....
Won't running these games from a *.zip file slow things down?

I got it working now.
Seems in my haste, I forgot 2 libraries

libpng12_1.2.8-0_arm.ipk
libSDL-image_1.2.5cvs-1_arm.ipk

Installed them, and now neogeo works
superspy works, but topgolf doesn't respond at all

I had to launch superspy twice, and it still didn't work right.
When I exited the emulator, superspy's music and sounds were still playing.
I had to kill processes related to emu and neogeo.

Then I tried launching superspy again, and after a scrambled screen, the '3' key (for insert coin), launched the opening screen.
It seems to work fine now.
But I had a bit of trouble getting superspy started.

I wonder if I re-zip the topgolf after renaming all *.rom to *.bin, if it will launch, because superspy works like that.
In other words, all it's zip contents are *.bin files.

I've included a small file re-namer for windows. It will rename all extensions in a folder for you.
It was mainly used by karaoke collectors to rename their mp3+g pairs of files, (these files all have to have the same names in pairs to play on a karaoke laptop)

YEA!  topgolf works now!!

I renamed all 17 *.rom files to *.bin and zipped them back up.
It plays nicely now.

EDIT: WOW!, this is the coolest looking golf game for the Zaurus.
Wish I could do a screenshot. It works beautifully!
I'll write a review after I play 18 holes

These next 2 Golf games are for the neogeo.
Topgolf is a way cool looking golf game.
There are 2 courses to choose from,
You can play stroke play, match play, or nassau.
The graphics are cool, the music changes throughout the game.
There is advice given in audio that is easy to understand.
All music and audio is crisp and clear, (even through the tiny C3100's speaker)
I haven't tried it with headphones, but I'm certain the audio is much better with headphones.
This game is a bit difficult to play, but once you get used to the controls, should be fairly easy to play.
Except for one thing, putting is very difficult because it is almost impossible to make a putt that is under 6 ft.
The button response isn't accurate enough to register 2 very quick clicks.
The golfball usually shoots over the top of the cup because you cannot register a very small increment on the shot meter.
This kind of control seems to require a joystick, or some other control, besides the 'Z' key on the Zaurus keyboard.
<<<See note about making short putts in my post #239, at bottom of post>>>
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"Instead of clicking the button twice, to try and make the meter stop on a short stroke,
just click it once, and let it go.
The meter will rise and fall continuously, and you can "make" your second click when it reaches your desired position.
Cool, isn't it.
Now I can make those short putts without shooting my ball past the cup."
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
This is a very fun game to play, and there are comments on all "nice shots" and good plays.
There is applause for making birdies, and there are also side contests during the game, like longest drive, etc.
I hope to find a way to get screenshots, because the next golf game I'm going to comment on really shines in the graphics department!

I actually got "Neo Turf Masters / Big Tournament Golf" running on my Z
I'm not sure if this version is different, but the site that has this game, has 2 different sections to download neogeo roms.
In the neogeo section is a warning about needing the latest emulator, and if you don't have the latest emulator, they suggest you download neogeo games listed under the "Mame" section.
This game is listed in both sections, and I got the one from the "Mame" section.
To get this game to start, I had to try to launch it 3 times.
It seems like the emulator "gives up" before this game is completely loaded the first 2 times I tried it.
This game is 9.2MB in a zip file and is 18.2MB when unzipped.
So, I'm thinking the size of this game, is what is making the emulator give up before it is loaded.
Well, on to the game. If you think Topgolf's graphics are good, and really cool, you haven't seen anything yet, until you see "Neo Turf Masters / Big Tournament Golf" on your Zaurus screen!
This game is chuck full of features! (I really wish I had a screenshot to post).
The graphics seem to push the limit of the Zaurus, and/or the emulator.
Sometimes the music lags just a little when some hi-res graphic is loading.
This isn't much of a problem, since it is hardly noticable.
This game renders new complex/hi-res graphics very quickly.
It is no comparison to some of the other golf games that I have posted about earlier that are slow to load new scenes.
There are beautiful background scenes, mountains, water, etc.
This game comes the closest to my PC version of Tiger Woods PGA golf as any game on the Zaurus.
(And Tiger Woods comes on 3 CDs)
It also shows a cool graphic of your lie, just after making a shot.
This game has 4 courses
1. Germany
2. Japan
3. USA
4. Australia
The swing/putt meter is a bit different than other golf games I have mentioned and is easier to use on the Zaurus.
There are 2 meters which are constantly moving.
One meter goes up and down, and is for selecting the power of your shot.
The other meter, also goes up and down and has 3 selections to choose.
high, nice, and low
You control these meters seperately, so it's easy to make a good shot on the Zaurus keyboard.
To hook or slice the ball, use the 'A' or 'B' button on the neogeo controller, which corresponds to the 'Z' or 'X' button on the Zaurus.
Putts are also easy to make compared to other golf games on the emulator.
There is a constantly moving putt meter with a sweet spot, which corresponds to the distance needed to make it to the hole.
This makes it easy to play on the Zaurus.
I just made 2 birdies in a row!
When you play poorly, just after you hole out of the "bad" hole, there's a graphic of you "bending" your putter's shaft in disgust, while the crowd watches you.
There are a lot of cool things in this game that need to be seen or checked out.
I just got a penality for "Delay of Play", (as in real golf), because I was busy typing this and not playing my game.
I just needed to insert more coins, and start game as in the real arcade game.
The female announcer just said, "Player 1 had a bad day"   he he
You really have to try this game.
It also has an autosave, and when you re-start the game, it asks if you want to resume, or start a new game.
One last thing before wrapping up this review.
Once you have launched this game successfully, it seems on subsequent launches only take 1 or 2 attempts.
I just launched it on my first attempt, (after starting, and closing it several times, I think 3 or 4 times).

That's it,
Jon

you need to uninstall your zemufe-zports_v1_arm.ipk and reinstall it because this is the last thing that should be installed.  Reason being is it replaces all settings from original ipk's and improves gameplay as much as 50%.

hey john..thanks for the game review. btw, have you tried overclocking the handheld to see if the games run better? especially crossswords?

I did uninstall, and re-install zemufe-zports_v1_arm.ipk each time, while I was troubleshooting my setup.
Thanks for explaining why it needs to be uninstalled, then re-installed.

No, I haven't tried overclocking. I only overclock when trying to play stubborn videos.
I always set it back to normal settings after I'm finished though.
I haven't tried crosswords. I haven't been able to find it, I'll have to look for it later.
It's not on the site where I found my other ROMs.
Are you sure it's name is crosswords? or is it crossed swords?
I located crossed swords
There is something else I tried, which will be in my next post, since it's a different subject.

I'm going to try and see if there is any performance difference in neogeo ROMs,
zipped at different compression ratios.
My version of winzip has these 5 ratios.
None
Super Fast
Fast
Normal
Maximum (slowest)

I'm trying this because the audio/music stutters a little in "Neo Turf Masters / Big Tournament Golf"
All my neogeo *.zip files are compressed to the "Maximum (slowest)" setting.
I'm going to try "None"
Then, I'll try "Super Fast"

For informational purposes, these 2 settings have the following compression on this type of file:
None = none
Super Fast = 50% (cuts file size in half)

There seems to be no differance in "None", "Super Fast" and "Maximum (slowest)" with Top Golf.

Playing Neo Turf Masters / Big Tournament Golf with the zipped file set to "none" didn't seem to make any difference.
There seems to be a some difference in "Super Fast" and "Maximum (slowest)" with Neo Turf Masters / Big Tournament Golf.

The "Super Fast" setting zip file seemed to play with less stuttering music.
I'm going to play it with that setting.

I was thinking earlier, if there is no difference in performance between the various compression ratios,
the emulator must decompress all the files to a temporary folder and play the uncompressed files.
Is this true?
If it is, there is no reason to try different compression ratios on these game files.
I may try overclocking, (for Turf Masters only) later.
Other games seem to have no performance problems.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

A note on Top Golf, which makes this game more playable on the Zaurus.
The swing meter is hard to control, especially when making short putts.
I just discovered this:
Instead of clicking the button twice, to try and make the meter stop on a short stroke,
just click it once, and let it go.
The meter will rise and fall continuously, and you can "make" your second click when it reaches your desired position.
Cool, isn't it.  Now I can make those short putts without shooting my ball past the cup.

And a note on Neo Turf Masters / Big Tournament Golf
Selecting different golfers allows easier/more difficult golf swings.
For example, the British golfer's swing meters are a lot slower.

OK, I give up.  How did you all fix the directional key problem?  On mine left is right and right is left in every emulator except snes.  I found the following a little ways back in the thread but I doesn't appear to tell me how to get the other emulators fixed.  My zemufeex_smc.sh already has the SDL_QT thing, hence the keys are correct.  The readme in the new package didn't say anything about how to fix it.

Quote
then modify this file /home/QtPalmtop/bin/zamufeex_smc.sh
----------------------------------------------------
#!/bin/bash
export SDL_QT_INVERT_ROTATION=1
cd "$1"
snes9x -win "$2"
exit 0

or if you want to replace the ok/enter key pause with L instead. L becomes
the pause and start and ok/enter is null so your game wont be interupted,
use the bottom code.

#!/bin/bash
export SDL_QT_INVERT_ROTATION=1
export S9XKEYS=27,100,99,115,120,97,122,108,32,103,106,117,110,121,98,105,109
cd "$1"
snes9x -win "$2"
exit 0
----------------------------------------------------

for the turbografx
----------------------------------------------------
create a directory in /home/zaurus/.zpce (there may be one already)

and place zpce.rc in that directory and should look like

/home/zaurus/.zpce/zpce.rc
----------------------------------------------------

and last
----------------------------------------------------
create a directory in /home/zaurus/.znester

and place znester.rc in that directory and should look like

/home/zaurus/.znester/znester.rc
----------------------------------------------------

hope this helps. Works fine for me in cacko.
