on a fresh install of akita, there is no Rox or Firefox. I installed mine with the pkg app.
The akita install is supposed to be a minimal install, and there are a lot of things missing that are in the full spitz version.
Just like the difference between Cacko full and Lite
you'll notice, no splash screen and no startup sound, no mplayer, etc, etc...

This is what is installed on my fresh akita install
Office: leafpad, abiword, X pdf
Internet: licq, ppp dialer, slypheed, xchat irc, dillo
Sound & video: oss mixer, xmms
Graphics: gqview
Other: galculator, screencap (it's missing the stuff needed to cap *.png files and it's icon), X virtual keyboard, xclock, xterm, rxvt, xircp
System tools: cpu config, date & time, input setup, lan & wifi, light & power, ppp modem, package manager, look & feel, usb, usb keyboard selector, qtconfig, pdaxii config
Utilities: > Panel: app launcher, aterm launcher, battery monitor, cf/sd monitor, clock, screen blanker, volume control, wireless monitor, x virtual keyboard, cpu monitor

Also, there is no "Reboot" on the menu, you have to install the reboot ipk seperately
[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=156184\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]

Thanks for the further clarification, Jon_J! Very helpful!

However, what puzzles me is why if this is the case, then why does the list of apps under the 'Installed' tab of the Package Manager show apps such as 'firefox, ROX, etc as being installed?

These apps are not shown under the other tab which lists apps that can be installed???

Something doesn't seem right about this........

firefox is not listed in my pkg manager, maybe you still have some settings left over from the spitz install
I cannot tell you if Rox was on my pkg manager, because I installed it last night, and it is there now because I installed it.

Oh, I forgot, there should be one game under Games:
I removed it last night.

EDIT: Firefox is much too big to ever be included in this kind of setup, at least that is my thinking.
In January, when I first installed akita 5.1 I installed Firefox to my hard drive because it is so big.
EDIT2: My available tab in pkg manager is empty. This is the first time I have looked at that tab.

when you install pdaXii13 base, you get the same pre-installed apps as pdaXrom beta3.

firefox and rox are pre-installed only in pdaXii13 full.
you will have nothing in the Available tab unless you have a working feed, ie via internet or on your local storage devices.
to make sure what you see in Package Manager is current and up to date, you need to update the Package List by clicking the update button in Package Manager, or running ipkg update from the command line before starting Package Manager...

I noticed Xpdf was updated to 3.02
It won't open my map of the state of Illinois. It tries to open it for about 30 seconds, then shuts down.
This map was designed in Illustrator (according to Acrobat) and is a *.pdf file.
It's basically a Vector drawing, and It's only 1 page and 585 kb

The only Zaurus PDF reader that I have found so far that opens this map at all, is Picsel browser, and Picsel opens it easily.
However, Xpdf opens the SL 6000 Opera manual nicely.
Going to try meanie's zbook3k.pdf (Dec 20 - 2006)
It opened the zbook3k with no problems

UPDATE

Re-flashed again and this time did 'patch loader limit' (or something like that) under 'NAND Utils' in installer then did 'Resize Root Partition' and this time used 121MB instead of 128MB (as was noted on Meanie's pdaXii13 page...). Then did Flash ROM....

This time booted up OK - No error messages! All green 'OK'....

Aha!

Thanks for sharing that with us Archimark- turns out that having to use the 'patch 64MB limit' NAND tool was the step I was missing all along in order to get pdaXii13 Sally installed on my c3100- I never thought I'd see it working having lost count of the number of times I've unsuccessfully tried to get it to install without hundreds of errors on boot!

However, you say you get no error messages whereas I'm just getting less than in previous ii13A installs.  Whilst booting, before its starts loading the daemons, I get lots and lots of jffs2_scan CRC failed errors followed by a few complaints about an 'empty flash'. The sshd daemon also gets a big red FAILED but I hardly ever use ssh so thats no showstopper for me.

Choosing 'Reboot' from the mb menu doesn't do anything for me - I have to run reboot from the shell.

Meanie- I thought I read that you had included a workaround for the temperamental keyboard support in this latest release? Where is it? I can't see any new keyboard app in the menus and if I have to open a console and run some command then that would defeat the point- how would I be able to do that without quitting X first? Of course, the keyboard wouldn't be working properly in this situation otherwise I'd have no need to run it and the whole point of this fix was to stop people having to reload X to fix the keyboard and so I expected the fix would be in the form of an app easily accessible through point n' click?

Antkx- I now want to see if I can (finally!) upgrade to Sally full but I'm having problems downloading the latest full hdimage from your site. It says it should be 198MB, which sounds about right, but when I try downloading it it says the file is only 85MB. Could you confirm this?

Back to Menay- I've been watching the size of pdaXii13 full slowly creep up over the last few months. I think it would be good to ensure it doesn't get too big that you can't fit all the install files onto a 256MB card. Just sparing a thought for the storage restricted!

Just confirming...
If I go here:
[a href=\"http://www.tyrannozaurus.com/feed/pdaXii13/tmp/]http://www.tyrannozaurus.com/feed/pdaXii13/tmp/
and click on the dload link for "hdimage-full.tgz (198MB) - build5.3.2 beta"
It is a 85.2 MB file that downloads despite it saying that it's 198MB in the HTML on the website.
I FTP'ed in that directory and  confirmed that it's not 198MB in size.
I'm guessing either Meanie hasn't updated the page with the right size yet or it got cut off when he was uploading.

the file was 192MB last time I checked, but now it is only 82MB
sigh.. need to re-upload...

actually, it's not too bad, i have two little fixes i wanted to add anyway so now I am going to regenerate the new image and upload again. this will take about 5-6 hours...

i will include the latest zbackup which allows you to take a restorable snapshot of your C300, C3100, C3200 and C1000, and maybe others as well...
also an updated datentime python script. this one sets the datte/time so it survives a reboot

I used the pdaXii13 NAND tools before my last sally install so I've just tried reflashing but using the pdaXrom b3 NAND tools instead to fix/resize my flash before installing pdaXii13 but I'm getting the same jffs2 scan errors and something about 'empty flash'. I also noticed a couple of other worrying things- it said it it mtd couldn't find my flash /home dir and I noticed that ssh was failing due to a corrupt file.

Could my NAND be knackered?? I'm going to try some of the D+M menu tests now....

What about the keyboard fix? Anyone know? I've not tried the latest full version to see if its in the matchbox menus on that yet.

Meanie,

I did try clicking the update button in Package Manager several times...also, did 'ipkg update' from the command line....

Meanwhile, manually installed firefox and rox...firefox works OK! But install of rox is screwy think some library is missing...and top of that now I have the taskbar at the bottom of the display but everything above that is gone now, just the gray hatched background.....

UPDATE:
Decided to see what happens if I reboot after enabling pdaXii13 maintenance mode option in 'pdaxii config'....rebooted OK and now I get a smooth gray colored desktop background and it opened up rox as I see a 'home' folder on the desktop.

Although I did get an Error message window saying that rox might not display correct file types as it couldn't find 'shared-mime-info (v.0.9 or later)'......it said that I should download and install it....

In 'Look&Feel' I tried to select the pdaXrom background image but it doesn't change from the gray color....

Starting to think I should just do a fresh install of pdaXii13 v.5.3.2 rather than trying to fix all these weird things going on...

The exact (first of many) error I'm getting early in my pdaXii13 Akita on c3100 bootup at the moment is

mtd: partition "home" is out of reach -- disabled

So I said I'd try going into the D+M menu. I've tried a few times and its not letting me- I can't access the D+M menu so I had a search of the forum and came across this thread:

https://www.oesf.org/forums/index.php?showt...520&#entry99520

Where sash posts a link to a tool he made to fix a problem with an earlier pdaXrom release had with the c3100. The link he gives is dead but I found a copy here

http://distro.ibiblio.org/pub/linux/distri...c10/sashz/test/

Do you think this tool will let me boot into the DM?

Did you try FN+D+M? (Two utilities are included -- D+M and FN+D+M in case one gets corrupted).
Conics SL-C3200 running pdaXrom beta3 and XFCE with a Planex WiFi CF card.

Yes, and it's my understanding that the menu brought up by pressing FN+D+M can not be overwritten by a bootloader, etc.

meanie, could you (please) include this as a separate IPK? Maybe it will fix my clock problems once and for all.

OR if you would, just attach the python script here and tell me where to copy it to.
I looked for it last night and couldn't find the datentime.py file on my Zaurus.

Download shared-mime-info_0.20_armv5tel.ipk from meanie's pdaxrom feed.
Depends: glib2, libxml2 (I think libxml2 is already installed)
[a href=\"http://www.tyrannozaurus.com/feed/beta3/feed/]http://www.tyrannozaurus.com/feed/beta3/feed/

Rox doesn't use Look&feel to change the background, this is only available in openbox.
In Rox, right click background (Fn+tap), then select Backdrop
EDIT:
Also, Rox has a comprehensive page of options. I think you can relocate the taskbar if you want.
right click background (Fn+tap), then select ROX-Filer > Options
