Hey portalgod,
The best way to significantly speed up PDAXrom, is if you do not need Chinese input support.  Simply uninstall SCIM.  Very big speed-up as mentioned by Meanie.

Using the card applet monitor to eject the card, it reports "You can now eject the card" or whatever the message is.

However if I dropped to console and umount'ed it, it complains that it is busy.

Yeah, I've got a bunch of stuff installed to SD and I've noticed the same thing.  I ended up rebooting and pulling the SD card before the OS started up and remounted it.  I'd guess that the "ok to eject" message is based on a delay, rather than actually checking if the umount was successful.

I didn't know exactly what was still running from the card, but I installed the additional packages for pdaXii13 5.3.3 to SD, so it could be any of those.

BTW, does anyone know why the SD needs to be unmounted prior to running the upgrade scripts for pdaXii13?

Two questions:

1. Were the freezing problems that seem to have crept in since the newer release versions (5.3.3 etc.) fixed or addressed yet?

2. Can anyone speak to whether it is worth it to use the 5.3.4 beta release in the hopes it's been addressed there or not?

and...most importantly to me:

3. Does the Sharp Remote Control Headset that comes with the SL-C3100 work with pdaXii13 rom? (Can't remember the product number but I do so love the dang thing.)

Thanks!

1 Haven't frozen on 5.3.3 or 5.3.4

2 Might as well use the latest--- if nothing else it's your best hope for an easy fix.

3 No idea about the remote.

4. cups is having problems with the glibc veriosn in 5.3.4  I assume it is an easy fix (like compiling cups over again, but haven't found any other discussion)

Thanks bro,

I took the plunge after downloading all the related files etc. and got the base NAND version installed without too many mishaps and dumb attacks. I hit a brick wall when I went to install the microdrive image however. I'm using the hdimage-full 5.3.5beta, as it is the ONLY other version I could find other than the 5.3.1stable that is available in the akita Tyrannozaurus site (which is great Ant even though I've told you that about the site before.) The beta file of course being found in the spitz "cutting edge" beta downloads area.

So since the directions didn't specify, after I got my clean installation working with just the NAND version I popped the hdimage onto my external microdrive and jumped back into the flasher and repartitioned my interior CF Flash Drive manually (it's an 8gb flash drive I replaced the md with so I couldn't use the default feature, which I hated because I think it would have made life much simpler.)

I then rebooted to make sure the system would see the new partitions correctly as it told me to and reentered the flash utility and tried to uncompress the hdimage to my drive. No luck. When I click on option 5 "Install hdimage" it just pops back to the installer screen after about a second. Hmmm. I realized it wasn't formatted yet, so I used the console shell option and formatted hda1 to ext3 with no prob whatsoever and jumped back in and tried again...no luck. Hmmm. Maybe a reboot. No luck.

So I begin to think...hey does the hdimage need to be manually copied to the first partition because the flashloader looks for it there? So I copy it there and try the flashloader again. No luck.

I don't know.  I'd like to try a diff version that is 5.3.3 or later but I can't find but the one version that I have that fits that bill.

It's always the same symptom, the popping back to the pdaXii13 installer screen after a mere second as if it can't even find a valid hdimage to use, or a valid drive to use it on, but it doesn't give me any feedback or errors so I have nothing to go on.

Any ideas anyone?

Thanks in advance!

Meanie has setup the hdimage installer to work with the original drives that shipped with the 3x00 units.  The initial detection of a 3000, 3100, 3200 determines what fdisk script it runs.  For the 3000 and 3100 is expecting a 4GB drive.  For the 3200 it is expecting a 6GB drive.

Since your 3100 has an 8GB drive the fdisk script is probably bombing out on you.  If you were to manually partition your drive and not use that step in the installer, you might be able to get the installer to do the HDImage copy for you.

Yup, I believe you are exactly correct, and that was part of what I was trying to get across in the above post. I saw that problem coming and avoided the automatic partitioning and did mine manually.  The partitions are formatting and mounting just fine just as descibed that they would during the first boot. It's just that the hdimage decompression only option (there actually is one in the setup options in the installer) will not work. It's probably not noticed by most folks if the fdisk script automatically launches it for them.  So I'm beginning to think the script for this option is either A. not working properly, or B. just doesn't know what to think of my big drive.

I DO know now that it isn't a corrupt file issue as I've checked my md5sums and also tried the 5.3.1 file with the same result.  The question that comes to mind at the moment is Would it be possible to manually decompress the files into the first partition myself and then copy /home and the other directory like your supposed to and have it work?  If so what would the exact syntax of the operation be and could I do it from within a shell terminal within X or do I need to dump out of all GUI's altogether etc. or do anything crazy like remount the root filesystem as rw while I do it etc. etc. etc.?  I've already tried to do this from the shell that the manual partitioning option in the Install Options drops you to but I was unable to mount the first partition of the drive and so therefore could copy nothing to it.

Come to think of it. Maybe that's what's wrong with the Install, maybe it can't expand the hdimage because it can't mount the first partition yet for some reason. But for whatever the reason the first partition DOES mount automatically by the time the system boots into the GUI so I just don't know.

*sigh* Typical. I just introduced more questions than answers.

Thanks for helping keep the ideas flowing please! I'd love for this to be a stupid NeuroShock mistake and turn out to be something stupidly simple and we can all sit back and laugh at me!

=) Thanks All

Oooooooh! I'm getting really close I think!

I have manually managed to copy/expand the thing to the drive and it pretty much does so only complaining of date errors that others saw here. It did complain of errors but I won't hold that against it since they didn't seem fatal at this point.

I'm apparently not managing to get all of /home copied though when I go to copy it to the NAND area and it might be in the syntax of my usage of the cp command. Could someone bless me with a plain vanilla example of the appropriate usage here that would maintain ownership rights etc?

I'm trying to copy from /mnt/ide/hdd1/home to /home for example.

Thanks.

-NeuroShock.

Oh and btw, the only bad sign was that after I manually expanded the files to the drive and rebooted the system did NOT ask me to move the files...I'm jsut doing it on the hopes that it will work and force the system to play ball with me.

Thanks again.

I don't have a harddrive to worry about, but I'm guessing that you want to use the -a switch on cp, like:
cp -a /mnt/ide/hdd1/home /home

-a will preserve mode, ownership & timestamps, will preserve links without dereferencing them, and will recurse the directory structure.  I believe that it will also pick up all hidden files.

Yes, the -a switch is the key and have this part licked now, but apparently I'm getting too many errors when I'm unpacking the file in the previous step. The tar command I'm using to unpack the hdimage is

su
cd /mnt/ide
tar -xvvf /mnt/cf/hdimage-full.tar (or the filename not sure of exact spelling)

Is my tar command correct because I am getting a WAZOO of errors relating to not being able to change ownership etc? I have MANY less time related errors as I took a few moments to set the clock and date correctly before attempting to upgrade the hdimage.

I think if I can get my tar command correct I'll be all right.  I HAVE managed to change the look feel of the system by uncompressing etc. but it produces a very very broken system with no new programs available to me on the desktop etc.

Thanks again everyone, I'm getting closer and closer....

I skimmed.  I admit it.
Still it seemt to me thet you maybe should have a minimum of 3 partitions about a gig and a half for /dev/hda1 about 256M for /dev/hda2 (swap) and what ever you want for hda3+

put the tarball onto partition 3

mount /dev/hda1 as something temporary, not /home or anything

cd to wherever you mounted hda1, and untar the tarball

reboot.  Hopefully your Z catches the image,   It might be useful to have a look at meranies script and manually do what it requires.

I think cp  isn't going to work....  but I could easily be mistaken

The first partition (/dev/hda1) approx 6.5g on mine, regardless of what I mount it to is ALWAYS upon a reboot found by the ROM and automatically mounted to /mnt/ide whether I like it or not.  I can untar the tarball to this partition till I turn blue in the face and pdaXii13 never see's it on reboot. I can unmount and remount it in another position and on reboot it's right back to /mnt/ide just like before.

You're completely correct about the cp command.  It's just not getting me there. It's obviously only copying files that it does NOT already find existing in already existing destination folders. So basically nothing changes hardly for me after copying.  I've researched the command onthe web and I can't see a command switch (using cp -a right now) that would correct this.

I'm totally lost.  The ONLY idea that currently occurs to me is to dissasemble my 3100, reinstall the original 4gb Microdrive, install pdaxii13 to my satisfaction and then remove the drive and try to use a cf to standard IDE 40pin cable adapter in conjunction with Partition Magic 8.0 to copy and resize the partitions to my 8gb Flash Card and then Reinstall the Flash Card.

Besides being overly complex, my hands shake fairly badly nowadays because of the neurological damage to be trying to mess with those tiny screws, I'm afraid I might brick it.

I'm losing faith here rapidly...and it's no easy task to return to Sharp/Cacko from this point and even if I do I will find myself right back to the same problem of not being able to run my X progs that I started with.

Please...anyone...even seriously wild silly suggestions would be welcomed at this point. I'm just desperate for a solution of SOME kind.

So First Question:
What procedure did YOU all use to copy /home and /etc from the microdrive to the NAND position? The directions seem to imply that everyone has to do it manually after they are told to upon reboot!?

and,

Final Question:
On normal systems (if you have akita working with pdaXii13 this means YOU!!)

What is the default mount point that pdaXii13 rom's automounter put your /dev/hda1 (the interior microdrive) on?  Is it /mnt/ide like mine? or perchance is it /hdd1?
Just a hunch I've got here....
