I'm not into the whole "PDA" thing at all, but I have my ideas for using a fully functional handtop computer. The 3100 seems to fit this use perfectly. The selling point with me was GNU/Linux. Now that it's here I'm looking for basic packages like bluetooth support, irc, and openssh. It seems that in the free community the stock rom is ignored? The whole point of running GNU/Linux is that you can add stuff as you need to. The problem so far is that everything is built for other "roms"?
How can I build my own src tree for the stock Sharp rom? Is the rom the 1.02JP? Is the the OS its self? I want an open, and complete environment. What are my best options? Can someone help to clear the fog up for me some so I can fully realize the role I'd like my new toy fill. PS. The audio on this thing is great! =) |

OpenZaurus is pretty much open but you do not full functionality since it is constantly being worked on by a few individuals
pdaXrom is great but last i tested it, has various bugs that seems to need fixing. I am waiting on this one myself. Cacko rom from maslovsky.....this one is great for newbie beginners. It is a polished sharprom with the extra bells and whistles that you are looking for. Now the sharprom is very and extremely versitile. You already have a large user-friendly database and you can install meani's XQT which will open a new environemnt with the X stuff. silpheed is possible, dillo, firefox, DEBIAN, openoffice, and the list goes on and on. I am using the sharprom on a c1000. I am going to suggest a few things. For a newbie, stick with the sharprom. Get familiar with the unit first and read the pro's and cons of the other zaurus images. Install my snes packages and nes emulators to keep you busy for a while....go to zaurusthemes.org and install the gant or oslinux themes or my noia theme which i am almost done with. go to zaurusvideo and install the video applications that enables you to run videos from your pda. look for my thread about blues and you can download the files needed to get bluez running. Some files are almost none existant in the net and the ones who have them, can email it to you. I am working updating the shoutcast software for the zaurus so you can listen to streaming audio anywere there is wifi. There is already one but it needs to be configured to read the stuff in english manually. Install XQT and the various x softwares and then decide if you really want to try the other rom images. get the KO/PI for your zaurus since this is the best addressbook and calendar out there. If you have any problems, get in touch with me or anybody and its funny thing that everybody is so eager to help each other out. Keep an eye out for openzaurus and pdaxrom. They are not done but man they look so cool. check out meanies site for super customizations on sharprom. http://www.users.on.net/~hluc/myZaurus/jumbo/xqtjumbo.html this one gives you just software http://www.killefiz.de/zaurus/ and as well as elsi here at zaurususergroup check my signature down for my links for snes emulator and zaurusvideo. sharprom running gant theme ![]() pdaxrom ![]() e17

"Many programs were made for the previous generation of Zauruses or are direct ports of desktop Linux programs and haven't really been optimized for the Zaurus at all. And in some cases just installing the programs is a very complicated process involving tracking down half a dozen library packages from various web sites, manually editing configuration files, etc. Compared to the Palm or the Pocket PC, software for the Zaurus is seriously lacking in user friendliness and variety. This isn't meant as an attack on the developers who are still supporting the Zaurus. I'm grateful for what they do. It's just too bad that there isn't more good software available. Admittedly, this is largely because Sharp pulled out of the US market." This makes me worry a bit. Can't they learn to statically link applications? That's 90% of his angst right there. I'm an admin. I'm not really a game player. OTOH I might buy the src for introversion's hack game uplink (to port), but I'm not sure how to build for this yet. All I really want are a basic set of communications. Even w/o irssi I can log into someplace if I had ssh, and irc from there. Skype would be wild, but even just an IM would be nice. The way I look at this is it's a blackberry gone "The Hulk". (almost limitless possabilities) PS. Can I install this? <url:http://me.256k.net/zaurus/opera/> |

Sylpheed is a usenet is it not? Thunderbird is email. Neither I have a use for. I don't really wanna mess with X11. I'd like to stick to qtopia if I can. Irssi would really fix me up for IM. (CLI fan) I've looked, but again is the problem with the rom I'm using? As you said I'm not comfortable upgrading quite yet. If I did, I think oz looks nice.
BTW, nice web page. Looks like I'm starting to find my way in this. PS. your video page: <url:http://home.earthlink.net/~cresho/videorouter.htm> Is designed for windows, so it's not too much help to me, but it seems well done. I have clean vobs of stuff I like to watch (2nd Gig), but I'm not sure how to make them small. (microdrive) Also I'm not sure how to make them play on the default player? (manual is in .jp) I used "Handbreak" in the past, but this is a whole different set of variables. I wonder about the speed of the playback on this chip? |

I know a number of other people are running it, so I guess it works, but I followed all the directions on the gaim site and still couldn't get it to work right, and I finally gave up. Still, someone more knowledgeable about Linux than I may not have any problems. |

that is because you did not follow my directions.
use the gaim instructions i posted. in c1000 general forum discussion here is an old post......icq dont work so use licq msn does work gaim on the c1000 but still works for yours as well...all to main memory after install, remove magnification by holding down on gaim icon (2sec) and remove magnification, reboot, then run program, create user (i tried msn cuz i hear others might have a problem), after you create your account, shut down program and restart. and log in. It takes time for you to get use to it. it works and when you log in, the only way you find out if you logged in is if you click on the right icons...it swings back between logged accounts and your friendly list. on the left, you can highlight the guy you want to chat with and then you click on chat icon and chat away. you can have multiple chat windows open within gaim. here is the location of the downloads. http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/qpe-gaim here is the files you need...nothing else and nothing newer. gconv-tiny_2.2.4-2_arm.ipk libgaim_0.71-1_arm.ipk libgaim-protocols_0.71-1_arm.ipk (this one installs all of them or just install the one particular one that you want such as msn. libgaim-ssl_0.71-1_arm.ipk libgcrypt1_1.1.9-3_arm.ipk libglib2.0_2.2.1_arm.ipk libgnutls7_0.8.10-2_arm.ipk libopie1_1.0.2_arm.ipk-this one you may need to look elsewere qpe-gaim_0.3-1_arm.ipk zlib_1.1.2_arm.ipk that is all. |

I think I did try using your directions, but I may try again later when I have time. But really, I think the instructions you give above pretty much reinforce my point about the lack of user-friendliness with many Zaurus software packages. I mean, you have to install 10 separate packages and even then it's not obvious how to use the program. |

Opera in general will. I don't know about that particular package. There's a big thread in the forums about installing and using Opera. You might want to check it out if you haven't already.

It's just wrong for people to have that much difficulty on such a "set" system.

1st install
opera_sl-5x00-7.30.9965_arm.ipk 2nd install opera-cseries-fix_7.30_arm.ipk third. just because you installed these, it does not mean that you can bookmark since permissions are changed. in order for you to bookmark or save settings in opera, you need to change permissions for a certain directory. change permission in /home/zaurus by in the terminal excuse my messy code but i hope some one can correct me CODE su chown -R zaurus:qpe /home/zaurus/.opera chmod 700 /home/zaurus/.opera works fine on my c1000. do my thing first and reboot it if you wish. then try opera and see if it works. you can find the files by googling it. |

i forgot to mention to install a terminal program zaurus does not have one by default.
i recommend qkonsole after install....hold icon down to open up new menu and the you canuncheck magnify. after that, you can issue those commands. I forgot to mention to change the font size since by default, its tiny. |
