I bought one on eBay, very cheap and works fine.
But you need to be a little careful with them - they draw power that exceeds the USB spec, that's why the "official" cables don't do this. Some people say they can damage your USB ports. |

Would running it through a powered USB hub somehow save your USB ports from annihilation?

You should not be able to take too much power from a USB port, your PC will automatically cut power to the USB port & display a message saying device took to much power.
I got one of these messages yesterday! Mike |

QUOTE(ma401 @ Feb 10 2006, 12:07 PM) It all depends on the quality of the USB device you plug your Z into and how much current it is going to allow. Some PCs have overvoltage protection whereas others don't. Also, since powered hubs can give more than the standard voltage/current, you should be careful with those so spend a bit more on a hub that has some protection mechanism build in rather than the cheap ones that doesn't care and might fry your Z. |

As long as the voltage is 5v, you won't damage your Z. The main risk is to the USB port on your laptop. Some computers handle it better than others, I have heard reports of smoked USB ports on some other forums. They claimed it happened suddenly, even though the cable had been working fine for months already.
The power draw also depends on what the Z is doing. Recharging with the Z turned off is safer than running with WiFi at full screen brightness. |

I would not like to bet on not damaging the Z if the charger doesn't have the current capacity that the Z requires. When you take any power supply to it's current limit and beyond the regulation goes out the window and you could easily damage the Z with spikes or AC that was created by being over the PSU limit. |
