My digital camera generates .avi files, and I've been trying to play them using mplayer on my Zaurii (a 3100 with stock sharp rom, and an 860 with pdaXrom). The former case was installed via the instructions on Meanie's excellent web pages, the latter is just the "comes with" setup on the rom image.

The videos run on both machines with -nosound but crash after a few frames when the sound is on. I've tried various options but nothing seems to make a difference. It seems like the sound is encoded using mu-law (variously written mlaw, mulaw or -law etc which doesn't exactly help with googling...). In theory mplayer can handle this but I can't find any hints on this for the Zaurus. It seems like a rather standard codec, but maybe not for movies...any hints anyone?
