Nothing for sale or wanted but just to point out....

Many people are selling their SL-CXXX's and a matter of fact a lot of people are selling Z's!

Yeah but look on the bright side- every Z that's sold means one new Z user!

Also bear in mind some people have an irrational need to keep buying whatever glitters and is new, some people will be getting 6000's and then when another machine comes out some will want that too. Don't forget there is a huge number of Z users who don't use ZUG, they will quietly and happily get many many years of joy from their Z's.

I wouldn't worry too much, I've seen a few being sold, not that I read the posts on purpose, by people who have just bought a Z without engaging the brain first, so they end up with something beyond their ability to use or needs. I've seen posts by people who buy a Z, then sell it and feel compelled to tell everyone why, usually with lame ass excuses like 'erm.. der... er.. it wont sync with er... der... Windoze.. derrr...' Well it does bloody sync dimwit!!! pah!

My view is if someone doesn't like the Z and want's to sell it, good, it's a filtering process. cgrieves is right of course.. and a Linux handheld is not for everyone, I know MANY people who would not get the use from one, but would get the use from an elementary device like a Palm or PPC. Whatever floats your boat....

Thus is the great mystery of life....

The Zaurus is a simple tool. I've used linux for many years and I still had a hard ass time setting up my 5600. That's why I'm selling mine.

I also just purchased a C860 and a C750, and I'll be trying my hand at those. If I like them (which I have a feeling I will seeing as how they have more support), I will keep the one I like and hand the other to my girlfriend or possibly even sell that one. Regardless of the fact, you guys need to stop being elitist about the Zaurus. It's something that is ruining the entire linux community. The whole "I'm better than you because I run linux" thing is old.

I actually used a new Ipaq the other day and you know what, that thing is amazing. Most everything that we think is great in the Zaurus, it does normally. It has a built it WiFi scanner, and can hop from network to network to network transparently. We have to add all that stuff on our own.

Now I'm not saying the Ipaq is better. I'm just asking you to quit the whole elitist thing. You're better than someone at something and they're better than you at something else. It's no big deal.

hmmm... isn't the flame war in the other topic?

for me, the issue is simple: I (can) have a compiler and X windows ... on the unit itself.

ps: let us know what you think of the 860 vs the 5600 :->

For me, the 5600 is a great device. I love the look and feel of it even before I press the "On" button and start tinkering with it. However I realised within a few weeks that I really should have gone with my gut feeling and bought the "Big Daddy" C860 in the first place. So mine should be here any day now (fingers crossed that USPS and Customs don't spoil the party....) My brother in law has agreed to buy my 5600 which is excellent because I can keep an eye on it wink.gif

I bought my Z to replace my Psion series 5, which was a tool/toy first and a PIM second. Now with the Zaurus, after a bit (well, a lot) of fiddling I have something which works very well as a PIM, and is the best toy I've seen that fits in the pocket. But I also feel it's the fiddling that's made it fun. It's my device now, in a way that a Palm or Ipaq would probably never be.

I don't see much elitism here, but I'll concede that I have succumbed to the odd smug grin when firing up a bash shell on the train. Counter that with the times I have banged my head against the wall trying to get apps to work.

For me the whole point of the device is that the nuts and bolts of the device are pretty much laid bare for anyone to play with. If I had wanted a PIM to give to my Mum, I would have bought her a Palm, because that's the sort of person that device is geared towards, and it does that job fantastically well. As it is, I wanted a device with a lot of hidden potential even if it has a steep learning curve. Even if I have no idea what I'm doing yet, the capability to do things like compile applications, run X, write scripts and all sort of other things is extremely compelling, and I guess that's what drives the type of User that that the Zaurus attracts.

Ok, I'm gonna bite..

Firstly I'll take issue with you that the Zaurus is a simple tool, you contradicted yourself immediately, if you had a hard time setting up a 5600 with your Linux experience then how is it just a simple tool? If I gave any Z 'out-of-the-box' to my 'other half' or some of my friends or even my mother, they would not have a clue what to do with it, but they would get more usage from a PPC and even more with a Palm device which are designed for ease of use. The Zaurus is a complex tool, overkill for many users who are better served by other machines.

Second, I'm not being elitist and I REALLY resent any implication of that. I'm getting sick to death of moaners attacking anyone who shows pride in their Z's on a ZAURUS User Group website. I like my Z, I love Linux and I am unashamedly militant about it and I do NOT have to justify that to anyone, and guess what? STATING A PERSONAL PREFERENCE IS NOT ELITISM NOR FLAMING.

The point which has obviously missed you completely is that I was stating different machines/tools suit different people and requirements. It was in response to Rikya's question. Some people buy stuff which is unsuitable, so they sell it and buy something more appropriate to their needs and/or abilities. What the hell is wrong with that?

My post was intended to be good humoured and jesting, this isn't. There's a Report button if that's a problem for you.
