admission: never got on the OZ bandwagon, was happy w/ Sharp rom 3.13

problem: The hardware switches on the sl-5500 sliding keyboard cover bounce quite a bit. You might push cancel once, and it close all your running programs. You hit home, it might blast through all the tabs several times before settling (rather like roulette). I've tried a few times to clean the contacts, but fear that the switches themselves might be the problem.

question: has switch debounce logic ever been added to OZ or Angstrom?

I'm using the original USB cradle to connect my Zaurus sl-5500 to my workplace Windows box. I use TCP/IB over USB so I can copy files to the Z, as well as sync Outlook. I started with the how-to, and got it working...

sl-5500: Sharp ROM v3.13,
Windows: win XP 2002 SP2,

The problem is this: sometimes when I plug the Z in, I only get the generic USB "box with green left arrow" thing on the tooltray and no connectivity. Sometimes I plug it in and get the churning yellow network tooltray icon and an "acquirimg network address" message in the win XP network status page. Sometimes it works, and I get the good network icon and a 10 Mbps connection established message.

It seems a bit more likely to work after freshly rebooting XP and/or Z.

I'd love to set whatever parameter that windows is always "acquiring" permanently, but anything I touch on the Windows side seems to make it not work.

How can I make this connect reliably? I'd like to sync each morning, but sometimes I have to tinker with it off and on all day!

On the sl-5500 with Sharp rom v 3.13, where is the handwriting recognition training data kept?

The default character set plagued me, so I trained mine to recognize graffiti. I have a complete backup of the PDA from that time. I've since done a full reset, and got it back running pretty well, but would like to import the previous training information instead of retraining it.

I've got a "full backup" here on my windows PC, and renamed it, adding .tar.gz to the fileneme, and it looks like I can access the whole filesystem. Where do I look?

I've got the cheapest CF wi-fi card available (Pretec from HSN for $21 shipped). I hope this isn't the problem.

On my Zaurus SL-5500 with the Sharp 3.13 ROM, I've had no success setting up the three wireless network detection software (Kismet, Wellenreiter, Discoverer).

If you set up a network and plug in the card, and start it, then it searches for a while and tells you if it's found an access point -- If you're near one, it names it correctly. I'm pretty sure that this card works. (But No AP at home to prove it.)

Kismet configured to the best of my ability (and I've collected no less than 7 slightly different how-to articles all based on different hardware and software combinations) eventually reports some FATAL error stuff.

Wellenreiter (https://www.oesf.org/howto/wellenreiter-sharp.tar) refuses to properly autodetect the card, and won't allow manual settings. Discoverer likewise.

Has anyone using this hardware and ROM combination properly set up a wireless sniffing app? Can you give me your recommendation and talk me through it?

I want to use OZ. It's a Good Thing, I'm sure... BUT...

Is there a clear cut way to transition PIM data to the packaged OZ PIM programs?

Do these OZ / (Opie, whatever) PIMS sync with my XP Outlook just like the Sharp stuff did?

Will it run Hancom Word / Sheet, Opera, Jeode?

...and little or no tinkering required, "It Just Works". I love tinkering as much as the next guy, but will wait longer for OZ to evolve if it looks like too much.

If OZ updates, do I have to get new answers to all the above questions? Can an OZ installation update itself (like Debian) or will updates be issued as ROM images?

Is there a website that tracks progress toward these kinds of questions?

I'm not asking for how-to's on all this, just a status report.
