Ok all. Here is the deal. I am the lead developer of ZSREP. The Zaurus Synchronization Repository. You may be saying that you heard about the Zaurus Synchronization Repository before, but it was only working for Linux. Well, it is true that originally the Zaurus Synchronization Repository produced two tools for synchronizing sharp based roms with Linux. These tools were called zync and zync-gui as some of you may have remembered.

zync and zync-gui were really proofs of concept that I actually reverse engineered the synchronization protocol correctly and that I could produce software to successfully sync with Zaurus. Well, they were short lived successes (however successing in linux) because as I found maintaining plug-ins for rapidly changing Desktop PIM applications in Linux alone is a never ending battle with my schedule.

Hence, I have chalked zync and zync-gui up to a learning experience and since then have decided to develop a cross-platform library (Linux, Mac OS X, BSD Family) which will support synchronization with the Zaurus (Sharp based ROMs of course). I have already starting doing a complete re-write of the core libraries used in zync so that it can be cross-platform.

I will then write a OpenSync plugin using this cross-platform library, hence producing a cross-platform solution for synchronizing one's Zaurus with Mac OS X and Linux.

The only real problem I have as of now is that I need someone (preferablly multiple people) who are willing to be in communication with me and provide at least compilation and installation testing of the library, if not test of the installed library as well. That way I can make sure that this library is functioning on Mac OS X.

Note: compilation testing simply means running the following two commands and e-mailing me any error output

./configure
make

The install testing requires only one more command,

make install

Well, anyways, you can check out the project at http://zsrep.sf.net and please contact me if you are interesting in helping test, or even develop this solution.

my jabber id is cyphactor@jabber.org or cyphactor@jabber.anywise.com. I can be reached on these accounts by anyone using Google Talk as well.

If you are an AIM junky then you can contact me via my aim name of HUNNYnNUTTS.

If e-mail is your game please contact me at cyphactor@socal.rr.com.

Thanks,

Hi all. I am the founder and lead developer of Zync and Zync-GUI. The only true sync solution for DTM based Zaurus ROMs. I have been working my but off trying to get this thing totally implemented and into a solid beta stage. However, I have heard from very few of you in testing it. This is some what sad, I would have thought that such an effort to provide a good solution for synchronization would mean a lot to the Linux/Zaurus community.

Anyways, due to life in general and the fact that I do not get payed to develop this software, I am going to need some help to get it done sooner so that we all have full sync capabilites with our Zauri.

I have made it very easy for people to develop plugins for zync to work with different Personal Information Management suites on the desktop. The plugin specs are very rigid and defined so there is no guessing like with other plugin architectures out there. I have no problem implementing the non plugin portions which have yet to be implemented. But, it would happen a lot quicker if some other members of the community could work from the opposite direction and implemented plugins for their choice of desktop PIM applications.

I have already implemented the KOrganizer ToDo plugin for zync. If you are interested in writing a plugin for zync please please please e-mail me at cyphactor@socal.rr.com or respond to this post.

Information on Zync, Zync-GUI, and an abundance of information can be found at http://zsrep.sourceforge.net. Please please please, help I want to get this done!!

Thanks,
Andrew De Ponte

Hi all. This is a poll to see what priority I should use for developing plugins for Zync. I started out developing plugins for the KDE desktop originally because it seemed a lot of people use it. After getting deep into the KDE API and finding that I do NOT like it (no offense to the KDE developers) for a large number of reasons. I have looked at the Evolution documentation for the API and it looks a hundred times better than the KDE API.

Anyways, I have already written the KOrganizer To-Do plugin for Zync and started developing the KAddressBook plugin as well. In the process of developing the KAddressBook plugin I have run into a large number of problems dealing with the KDE API. Hence, I decided to look at the Evolution API and like it much better. Actually, I have also decided that I like using Evolution more than I like using Kontact.

Despite all of this, I want to develop what the people want. Hence, I am requesting your input on which plugins you want me to develop first.

Thanks,
Andrew De Ponte

February 7th 03:29 PM - I just released zync v0.2.6, KOrganizer Todo Plugin v1.0.2, and zync-gui v0.1.2. This series of releases provides a number of improvements in stability. It also provides single action Full Sync support, allowing people who have never synced their Zaurus before, or have just formated their Zaurus, or who have cleared the sync state of their Zaurus to synchronize as expected. For more information on the changes please check the ChangeLog section of the site. Grab the latest RPM or tar from the Download section.

February 7th 01:43 PM - I just released SuSE Linux 9.2 Cradle Synchronization Configuration v1.0.1. This updated version of the document now includes a portion within the Turning on the Zaurus section which covers how to handle SuSE 9.1 and 9.2 auto detecting the Zaurus as a modem. This version also has some typos fixed. Go grab the latest and greatest.

Go grab the latest RPMs are tars at http://zsrep.sourceforge.net in the Download section.

I have also been working on the KAddressBook plugin. Due to some lacking support features it is taking longer than expected. However, the KAddressBook plugin should be available very soon.

Hi all. I just wanted to let you know that I have released v1.0.0 (the initial release) of an indepth HowTo basically, covering setting up a Linux box for synchronization using the USB Cradle. This document was written specifically for SuSE 9.2. However, 99 percent of the document applies to most other Linux distributions. Go take a gander at http://zsrep.sourceforge.net. Hope, it helps the community a bit.
