Off Topic forum / Cool Clamshell Design - Far Cooler Than The Z
« on: June 19, 2007, 08:38:18 pm »
http://www.engadget.com/2007/06/19/irivers...o-learn-korean/

Why do they keep churning out dictionaries in such cool form factors, while the UMPC's  make such atrocious designs ?

Sharp with its Zaurus based dictionaries and now iRiver with this  - damn Asia - they get the goodies and we get monstrosities like the Samsung Q1 or Flipbook or whatever.

General Discussion / Forget The Zaurus - Itś Fujitsu Time!

I guess these UMPC devices want to sell only on their Wow factor and their price premiums.

Of course, not anyone in their right minds would want to buy a small device which only packed in a full version of windows and sells for twice your average top-line laptop price. When the much affordable less powerfull but as functional a device as the Zaurus (and add any others in this category, I didnt find any) were available

Unless of course, you were some nerd thinking $2000 would bring you manna from heaven.
No wonder this UMPC thing never picked off.

Ubuntu / Ubuntu On My Zaurus?
« on: May 09, 2007, 10:30:24 am »
I think it good that <some> linux companies are trying to spread Linux to more platforms and the more pervasive they are the better for Linux (and also for the said linux company).

I think its a good thing for linux itself to see Ubuntu try to do this and spead the message of linux being easy and a no-brainer to more people using different mobile hardware (and not only Intels MIDS).

The point is the more platforms it supports, the more developers there will be and the more of a mobile Linux ecosystem will be developed.

While it may sound to be like the death-knell for smaller companies/developer's efforts to roll a suitable embedded OS with ROM for mobile devices, in the long run I think it will only benefit all - since there will be more of an uptake of Linux on mobile devices ...

General Discussion / The Zaurus Replacement (perhaps)
« on: May 08, 2007, 10:48:19 am »
Again, never used a Psion, but the Zaurus keyboard is pretty good.In fact I have been able to type in largish emails and documents and it has worked perfectly. The feedback is good and the whole feel of using it is pretty good. I don't know how anyone can call it bad (or a joke), but again to everyone his opinions.

But I do agree with Kopsis there, using the SL6000 keyboard was actually equally good while I used it (its the same style as the 5500). In fact while deciding to dump either my C1000 or SL-6000 I had a hard time deciding and the keyboard wasn't one of the factors. Ulitmately the clamshell design won me over.

Only that now with the C1000, I find more keys easily than with the 6000 keyboard and the application keys do come in handy - particulrly when on the train, and you are holding the Zaurus with one hand, then having the app keys on the keyboard (where you are holding the zaurus with) is handy to start the frequently used apps. And the wider form factor is not that inhibiting for thumb typing (maybe I have large palms).

General Discussion / Forget The Zaurus - Itś Fujitsu Time!

While the specs are indeed impressive, nothing beats the Zaurus inthe price-performance comparison - Yet.

I mean the Fujitsu will probably sell for something like $2000 - thats too high a price for portability. The Zaurus wins hands down for this reason alone - for the price of a good portable solution, it does more than what you expected.

Really speaking who wants a portable device to run the whole gamut of word processing and spreadsheeting and picture editing in its full glory while on the move.
An on-the-move solution is wholly different from a desktop based (even laptop) solution. So just cramming in a desktop powered thingie in a portable package doesnt always make a winning solution.
This is where the price-performance issue comes in. Together. Not just price, not just performance alone.

My 2 cents.

New products and alternatives / New Zaurus Successor?

On my desktop windows box, Firefox 2.0.0.3 already has full screen built-in.
I don't have any fullscreen plugin, extension, or theme.
I hit F-11, and it goes full screen, with no titlebar and toolbar, and the statusbar at the bottom is also missing. (True full screen)
[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=158177\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]

On my Linux box with Firefox 2.0 I have full screen as you mention already "built-in". I know I did not install any plugins. This is on my Suse box.

Thanks for documenting this feature - I didnt know this existed with a sigle button press.

Python / Train Schedule Viewer For Nokia Phones
« on: March 21, 2007, 03:21:34 pm »
Just designed a Python based Nokia S60 application for Nokia Phones (2nd gen models) that acts as a companion tool to the eZCommute for Zaurus that I had written long back

(see eZCommute for Zaurus)

Instead of taking out your Zaurus, starting it up, clicking on the application icon and waiting for it to start (remember python apps on Zaurus are a little slow to start), I thoght why not have a similar app right here on my phone to look up the same schedules file that resides on the Zaurus as well ?

Some more details about it

eZCommute Companion Application
-------------------------------------------
eZCommute-Mobile - for Nokia phones with S60 platform with Python installed

This is a view only (not able to create or edit schedules) application for a fast view of train/bus schedules on your phone.
Must faster and convenient than taking out your Zaurus, starting and wating for the application to start (remember, python apps on Zaurus are a little slower to start) while your train zips by on the platform (often happens to me, as announcements systems on New York area are horrendous).

You can create and edit the schedules on the Zaurus and then manually copy over the "up" and "dn" schedule files to the Nokia phone.
The Data files have to be copied under the "data" directory of the parent "eZCommute" directory wherever the eZCommute application was installed on the phone memory.
In the future will design a bluetooth Sync application to sync your timetables between the Zaurus and the Nokia phone (for phones supporting Bluetooth)

Requirement for the phone
--------------------------------

Install the compatible (and possibly latest 1.3 version) of python for your model of the S60 phone.
See website  - http://www.mobilenin.com/pys60/which_pys60...phone_model.php
for details on which version is for your version of the S60 device.

Installation
-------------
Just copy over the .SIS file to your phone (via IrDA or Bluetooth) and then install the application to your phone memory.
Note : It  still does not work flawlessly when installed to internal memory (MMC Card).

And finally heres the zip file containing the notes on how to create a flat text file of schedules and the .SIS installable fiel for Nokia phones (I used a Nokia 6600 to test, so please test on your version and feedback would be appreciated)

Python / Python For Google Calendar
« on: March 08, 2007, 11:15:28 am »
Hi there is a a python module for interfacting with the Google Calendar API

http://code.google.com/p/pygooglecalendar/

http://matt.poepping.googlepages.com/gcalpython

So now comes the interesting part - anyone interested in making a sync application between Google Calendar and KoPI Calendar on the Zaurus ?

I would have been, but frankly not able to spend time, so no commitments.
Moreover I am not particularly aware of the KoPi formats used (XML i believe).

How about inetrest in other Mashup ideas with Google Calendar  for the Zaurus ?

Just a thought ...

It turns out getting married takes more time the I thought.  I had what I thought was I good idea and opened my mouth, on the forum, before I should have.   I'll have more time to work on it latter this month, when I get back from the honeymoon.
[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=155683\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]

Congrats on your marraige and all the best.

Me thinks though, that staying married and catering to that aspect of life takes even more time and is the bane of many a good programming ideas
Speaking from experience

But all the best for your married life as well as your programming life too... would love to see the app that you mention in Python. I think its a very nice idea if implemented right.

Python / No More Interest In Python For Zaurus ?
« on: March 06, 2007, 05:35:19 pm »
Is Python for the Zaurus dying as a good development language ? I don't see any questions (or answers to questions) or any new interest in this Python thread any more. Not to mention the lack of any new apps as well.

Just wanted to give all you Python-istas a nudge and a 'bump'.

* it's vital when claiming against an airline to quote the Montreal Convention and insist on cash payment not vouchers, otherwise (as many found) they will send vouchers which can only be redeemed against full-price fares!
[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=155527\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]
The Montral Convention ???
That works in the USA, right ? Thanks for that tidbit of information. I wish I knew that - cause 2 years back when my parents came to visit us, by BA, they lost their luggage and then when it was found back (some other passenger had mistakenly taken the look-alike suitcase), there were gifts missing, that they had bought along for us and friends.

Nowadays with air-travel being such a hassle, its good to know these points.

Haha .. I just thought this thread was better titled than ZDevil's rather short title.
But not to take away from ZDevil's first post and nicely graphic-ed one at that.

Where are the admins - lets roll all three threads into one.
