Astro Slide - Hardware / Re: Camera - is it IMX586?

I wonde if Shuntcap ordered an Astro. Because without him, we might be lost.

Yes, I am also afraid so. Not sure how to communicate to Planet computers that they should deliver better software for the camera, they seem to be clueless about it :-(.

For me, it also does not feel rotated. Maybe Daniel W uses some software to automatically rotate the screen or some other setting from us regarding the rotation that is causing this difference?

Thanks too, using a spacebar is nice! However, the issue with photos with HDR+ enabled not being saved unless the screened is tapped to focus persists (I am wondering if others are also affected or it is just Vistaus and me). A minor pain in the ass, but not major, so no stress about it.

Astro Slide - Hardware / Camera - is it IMX586?
« on: October 14, 2020, 05:24:30 pm »
Planet announced the camera for Astro a while back to be 48MP from Sony. To me it sounds like the IMX586 model, so once again the true resolution is more like 12MP than 48 MP (https://www.nextpit.com/48-mp-or-not-look-at-sony-new-camera-sensor), but still a nice improvement over the Cosmo. Apparently, the final results can be quite different (and that is from phones that use an additional camera): https://www.notebookcheck.net/Sony-IMX586-Comparison-Review-Five-48-MP-smartphones-face-off-in-a-camera-duel.428434.0.html.

Do you think this is indeed the camera Astro will come with? And is there any hope it shoots decent pictures with the default settings, or will we need to wait for some hack like the lovely Shuntcap's GCam for Cosmo? https://www.oesf.org/forum/index.php?topic=35912?

So regarding macro, when you try for long enough, I found out the phone is capable of focusing something just a dozen centimetres from the lense.

However, today, the app stopped taking pictures with HDR+ enabled. It seems to be taking a picture but nothing gets saved. It happened once before when I turned on video, but a reboot fixed that. Now a reboot does not help and neither does removing and reinstalling the app. Any ideas (for now I turned the HDR+ feature off, but Iactually like its results)?

Ok, probably maybe three seconds. Still considerably longer than without the setting. I was off by two seconds, it felt long.

Is there any way to take a macro picture  with the app by Shuntcap? I cannot seem to find a way to modify focus distance.

I also found out I need to enable HDR+ in the settings to get betterlooking pictures (taking of a picture than takes around five cseconds).

Cosmo Communicator - Hardware / USB-C

How does your Cosmo charge with different chargers? I tried using a different charger (this one: https://www.axagon.eu/en/produkty/acu-pq22) and it seems slower then the one from Planet Computers.

It has USB-A and USB-C, I tried both and in an hour, I would get like 20 % increase in battery at most. USB-C supports USB-PD, so I would expect it to be quick. I will experiment with a different cable.

As for USB-A, what can I expect if it does not support PumpExpress but only quickcharge?

General Discussion / Vivaldi - a great browser for the Cosmo
« on: April 30, 2020, 06:02:47 pm »
I was quite pleased to hear a CEO of the Vivaldi company talk about owning a Cosmo and Gemini at 15:30 here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zhkkFcEwCBo

They just released a stable version for Android and it is optimized for landscape mode, apparently, as mentioned in the video. It beats Chrome and other browsers by a large margin (and can sync with a desktop version, though that is just a bit buggy but useful enough). I wholly recommend both on desktop and especially on your phone!

I couldn't get eSIM to work at all.... at least not with a (dutch) Simyo contract, I've tried yesterday, couldn't get data (or calls for that matter) to work. Cosmo may not be compatible to their eSIM card... don't know.

Best and easiest alternative is this so you can use 2 SIMs and an SD card simultaneously (I'm using a 256 gb card): https://www.oesf.org/forum/index.php?showtopic=36133
My eSIM works, I just have to pick it up every time after a rebbot, no need for extender. I will write to Planet Computers.

I am using eSIM and a normal SIM. I want to have the eSIM as default for data, calls and SMS. Cosmo keeps asking me after every reboot to pick a default sim.

Is there anybody with the same setup who either gets the same problem or for whom it works ok? It is annoying since data does not work after a reboot.

I cannot switch the sims as the operator of my physical SIM will not give me an eSIM.

I am on the latest firmware, but I am not sure if I still do not suffer from something that was presumed to be fixed, i.e. this from the release notes:
4. The eSIM chip status is now fixed after Cosmo restart, so eSIM selection is preserved (instead of switching to SIM lost 2)

Cosmo Communicator - Hardware / Rooting the Cosmo Communicator

I'd like to add that it's possible to do a full backup (make sure to include *every* partition from my scatter file) unlock the bootloader, backup seccfg again and then flash your complete backup and replace the boot img with the rooted one and the seccfg with the unlocked file. This way you can unlock and root without losing any data.

In theory it should even be possible to reflash your userdate after repartitioning this way, but I'm not sure which partitions beside userdata you need to reflash in order to be able to decrypt your userdata successfully. (Can't test at the moment, my Cosmo is in London since December for repairs.)

Any news on this? I would love to backup my data (including userdata, which, if I understand it correctly, are the most important anyway) before reflashing.

Also, now that there are official root images from Planet, is there any advantage at using procedures in this thread?

Also, regarding the official way - can I root the phone without changing partitions so that I do not lose my data?

So, did anybody tried this (or the ADB way) yet?
