No. I replaced the battery but that never helped. No need to talk to Planet Computers, they do not care, they said it was my problem not under warranty. I put it to electronic trash over a year ago.

For Sale / Wanted / Wanted: dead Cosmo/Cosmo keyboard
« on: March 07, 2021, 04:44:53 am »
I have a Cosmo without a keyboard. I am looking for a keyboard. Anybody has a dead cosmo that I could scavenge? Ideally from the EU due to shipping costs.

For Sale / Wanted / Sellin Cosmo with Czech or US English keyboard
« on: March 06, 2021, 07:06:51 am »
I am selling my Cosmo. New, I just opened the box and checked it works (it does). With Czech (EDIT: or US English) keyboard. I can send ti anywhere in the EU for 400 euros plus shipping (20 euros in the EU, like 5 € in Czechia). even with the "March Madness" sale, you would need to pay VAT now that Brexit happened I think, so I think it is still a good deal.

I am buying an e-ink phone instead.

(it is a replacement for one that failed, taht is why it is new)

EDIT: Somebody wants a Czech keyboard for their English keyboard Cosmo, so if you want, I could swap US English keys for the Czech ones.

Interesting. To me they initially promised to replace it for free.

IF the glass is fine, it is a manufacturing mistake and Planet might replace it for you. For me, ti also failed and then I broke the glass. I still think it is a bit non-consumer friendly that they then refused to replace it even though they earlier promised they would

For Sale / Wanted / Gemini/Cosmo battery
« on: January 12, 2021, 02:01:48 pm »
Anybody in need of Gemini/Cosmo battery? I have a brand new one (used for about three days). I bought it because I thought my issue with my Cosmo was due to a faulty battery but it was not the case. The batteries for the Cosmo and Gemini are the same, SXX600.
I am based in Czechia, so probably somebody here or in Europe due to shipping costs. But you would get it quicker than from China (I waited for a month for it).

40 € plus shipping. (cost me about 55)

Cosmo Communicator - General Discussion / Re: Camera

Indeed, now my pictures from my holidays are presentable again. I use it exclusively. I am really grateful for the work you have done, Shuntcap.

Do we know if anybody from Planet reads this? Is there a way to let them know about this? I am not even sure they are aware of the issue and that it is solvable.

That is an interesting phone, thank you! I am thinking about reselling the Astro as soon as it arrives - especially if the camera is bad again. I am also disappointed with PC support, I thought it would get better but it seems to have gotten worse...

Thank you Shuntcap. By the way, and I of courrse have zeo expectations, have you ordered Astro? I am afraid it would need something similar because I have vey low expectations from Planet Computers when it comes to photography.

Yay for decentralization :-(.

So I tried it and here is a tear-down guide, sort of. Sorry for bad quality of the cameras - not sure how to make pretty pictures with a webcamera, Cosmo is my only other camera and I could not use that for understandable reasons.

There are two things I wanted to accomplish:
1) Check the battery code in order to possibly order a replacement for my weird problem of it showing -1% charge: https://www.oesf.org/forum/index.php?topic=36419.0
(byt the way, the code is SXX600, it seems it is possible to order it from Amazon for around 50 euros and it is common with Gemini)

2) Get to the CoDi and cut its ribbon since it was broken and just was draining battery when I forgot to turn it off. I hope this actually works, but at least the gemini stopped nagging me about updating the firewall.

Their customer service is crap, unfortunately. I described the problem but I am not sure they read it at all. They want me to send it to them without any advice on what might be causing it and insisting on replacing the CoDi*. They vaguely suggested that often "the CoDI has the OLED panel itself broken, which can create some shortages." I started a parallel thread ( https://www.oesf.org/forum/index.php?topic=36418.0 ) if it is possible to just remove the CoDi altogether because of this. I am also not sure if it is just a battery issue. But appart from the "-1%", everything works. I think the random shutdowns occur when the battery drains completely - the software has no way of knowing so it just shuts down since there physically is not enough charge to power the phone remaining. I will probably try to reinstall the device in case this is something to do with software but I doubt that as well.

But communicating with them is hard, I repeatedly ask the same questions over and over, number them and I get a response in one third of the times and usually responding to just half of the questions. They never even acknowledged the battery issue is weird or that they are aware of its nature. Basically support level of some big company that has clueless people at the front level, but I would expect better from such a small company as Planet Computers is.

* Glass on top of CoDi is cracked after I dropped the phone, but it failed months before I cracked it due to this issue https://www.oesf.org/forum/index.php?topic=36278.0 - and given its battery demans, I found out I prefer turning it off anyway, it does not deliver on its promise. Also, I am not happy that they want me to pay for replacing something that was broken _before_ I managed to break it on my own (which they know, we communicated about it when it happened).

Some time ago, Android started to report battery charge "-1%" (that is a minus sign there). It seems to work otherwise. I can charge the phone and it works for about a day before turning off without any warning. But it is annoying to have no idea about the charge and also Google Play refuses to install or update any apps. Have you ever seen anything like that on Cosmo or on other phones? I tried googling but it does not seem common at all. Could this be a software issue or should I order a new battery? (Planet computers want to charge 95 pounds for it - it costs about 40 when I order it online and it is somewhat easy to replace, once one gets rid of that adhesive between the battery and the metal plate holding it in place).

UPDATE: I went ahead and created a sort of teardown guide in the second post and edited the title of this post accordingly. Original post starts below:

My CoDi failed (the internal crack that many people suffered). Unfortunately, I then managed to crack the glass display. Even though I notified Planet Computers about the CoDi failure about two months before I managed to crack it physically and they initially promised to replace it free of charge, now they want 135 pounds for it - way more than it is worth to me. So I was thinking about removing it altogether, because even cracked, it can still suck quite a lot of power when I forget to turn it off in settings.

Has anyone tried to dismantle the part of Cosmo with CoDi? I found a FCC document covering internals of the Cosmo in this thread: https://www.oesf.org/forum/index.php?topic=36134.0 but it is not that informative regarding a procedure to open the device up. Any suggestions?
