I'd been looking to purchase a 512Mb SD card for a while and the thread Preferred SD Card got my interest

I have to eat my words from an earlier post because this thing is made in Taiwan, not Japan. In any case, I was keen to see how it would perform against my 10Mb/sec Hagiwara SD card, so I ran a few rudimentary tests. I also ran the tests on my 40x PQI 256Mb CF card to see how it compared. All the tests were done in my SL-C760.



First thing I did was to use fdisk to set up the partition table (one linux partition) and created an ext2 filesystem on both SD cards. I left the CF card with it's FAT filesytem. All cards were mounted with the noatime option on.

Then I simply used dd to dump 225Mb of zero data onto each card and used the time command to see how long it took:

I ran this command three times consecutively for each card and averaged the results (I also added the sync time, but in all cases it was only around 0.2 seconds)

Toshiba 512Mb SD  => 3m47.244s =>  7.922 Mbits/sec => 1014.1 KBytes/sec
Hagiwara 256Mb SD => 3m00.064s => 10.037 Mbits/sec => 1284.8 KBytes/sec
PQI 256Mb CF      => 1m40.700s => 17.876 Mbits/sec => 2288.1 KBytes/sec


I was surprised to see that the Hagiwara did actually write data at 10Mbits/sec, and was very surprised to see that the CF card was almost twice as fast again! The Toshiba card definitely writes data slower, though considering I paid less for this 512Mb card than I did for the 256Mb card, I really can't complain.

Now that I had some numbers for write speed, I was keen to find out how fast data could be read from each card. I did a quick google and turned up a program called Bonnie which is nice and simple and compiled for arm with no fuss. The results from Bonnie are:

Unfortunately this board doesn't used a fixed width font for the code tags so the output is a bit messy, but there are a few interesting things to note.
  • The write speed "per block" is almost identical to the results I got using dd - this is a good thing.
  • The Toshiba card show slightly faster reads than the Hagiwara card at 1653 vs. 1621 K/sec
  • The CF card is again the fastest with a read speed of 1924 K/sec
I am really keen to see how other cards perform in the Zaurus. Bonnie is incredibly simple to use and gives easy to interpret results. If others want to run it on their SD/CF cards and post the results here, that would be great, and I'd be happy to compile everyone's data into an easy to read reference.

If you do run the tests (it only takes about 5 minutes), try to use the largest file size you can (ie: bonnie -s 225 peformed the tests using a 225 Mb file). And, if you report your results, please include:
  • Manufacturer's/Company/Brand Name
  • Country where card was made
  • Size of Card
  • CF or SD
  • Zaurus Model used
  • Filesystem used (ie: fat16, ext2, etc)
  • any mount options used
  • The output from the bonnie program
I'm guessing there's probably dozens of different cards in use by the ZUG member base. If we can build up a nice little database, it might take the guesswork out of that next CF/SD purchase.

Where are the file associations to particular applications kept on a Cxx0 zaurus (Sharp or Cacko)? For example, on my z, pdf files are associated with Opera, and I would like to change that so they are opened with qpdf.

I have the source code to a program that currently runs under Qtopia. I wish to run this software under X11.

What's involved? Is it a trivial conversion, or will I have to learn the whole Qt API?

Essentially, I just want to run this software on pdaXrom.

Admittedly, I've only been playing with pdaXrom for less than a week, but I'm already convinced this the the rom for me. There are a couple of thing bugging me though, and one is the way the ipk files on the pdaXrom feed are packaged up.

I'm assuming the developers of pdaXrom are lurking so first let me say this is the most brilliant advance in "*nix in a pocket" I could have ever imagined even less than a year ago.

My concern is that we are dealing with a hardware platform with specific flash memory limitations. I chose a root partition of 50Mb as advised in the install instructions, and it took me about 8 minutes before I ran out of room when installing packages.

So, what I'm suggesting is that all packages that are deemed "essential" be installed in flash to /usr, while all "extra" packages be installed to /usr/local which can reside on a CF or SD/MMF card. Someone with a lot more knowledge than me will have to decide what qualifies as "essential" or "extra".

And then there are library dependencies... one simple example is the gqview package which includes libpng.so.3 - this should really be in its own package of course.

I'm sure the pdaXrom team are well aware of the issues involved, but I thought I'd vent my opinion anyway.

which has mostly been extremely helpful.

My xmodmap file is set up exactly how I want it except for one thing - CAPSLOCK. I can't get it working. I've tried:


keycode 73 = Tab Tab Caps_Lock Caps_Lock
add lock = Caps_Lock


but this only works while the Caps key is being held down. Any pointers?

Also, does anyone know where to set up the global xmodmap file? I linked to /etc/X11/xinit/.Xmodmap but this didn't work, and I've resorted to calling xmodmap from my .xinitrc script.

Secondly, I've been reading about how you've all been setting up 2nd and 3rd mouse buttons using keyboard modifiers (esp. Foxdie), but no-one has mentioned exactly how they've achieved this. There is some vauge mention about a config file "xkmc", and Foxdie even has an example at http://foxdie.timduru.org/zaurus/x11_stuff/xkmc However, there is no such file in my distribution of pdaXrom 1.0.5.

How do I set up a keyboard modifier to activate the 2nd and third mouse buttons???
